TVR Awards -- Shockingly Good Talent That Didn't Win Reality Talent Shows (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jan 4th 2011 8:00AM

Despite their massive and persistent popularity, many TV-watchers still dismiss reality talent shows as boring, formulaic and silly. But it's impossible to deny that the likes of 'American Idol,' 'So You Think You Can Dance,' and 'The Sing-Off' exposed us to an incredible array of unique (and at times bizarre) talent in 2010. Many of our favorite reality talent show contestants this year weren't the ones who ended up winning; it was often the zaniest, most original acts that left the biggest impressions. We've narrowed our favorite runner-ups and also-rans down to the five most memorable. Which one of these almost-winners impressed you the most?

'So You Think You Can Dance's Alex Wong: 'I'm Not Finished'

by Sharon Knolle, posted Jul 12th 2010 5:40PM

Who didn't shed a tear last week over Alex Wong's early exit from 'So You Think You Can Dance?' The 23-year-old dancer, who'd given up his position at the Miami Ballet to be on the show, had won over both the audience and the judges with his astonishing versatility.

He seemed a good bet to win this season. Now, he faces an operation to repair his ruptured Achilles tendon and three months of recovery. Nigel Lythgoe told Alex that "of course" he is invited back next season. Alex talked to TV Squad about his brief time on the show and whether he plans on taking Nigel up on his invitation.

The End of a Contestant on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

The End of a Contestant on 'So You Think You Can Dance'Sigh. There's nothing worse than seeing a contestant being kicked off a show for reasons that are beyond his control. But that's what happened tonight on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thu., 9PM ET on Fox).

[Spoiler alert.]

Dancer Alex Wong was eliminated from the show -- and it wasn't his fault. On the previous episode, we learned that Alex suffered a foot injury, but no one was really sure how bad it was. Based on the injury, he was automatically placed in the "Bottom Three" on the show, and was instantly in danger of being kicked off.

Alex was a great dancer, and none of the judges wanted to remove him. But tonight, we learned that he suffered a lacerated Achilles tendon -- and as a result, he wouldn't able to dance for at least another three months.

Upon hearing the news, all the other contestants looked horrified. The judges were upset. Alex cried. But the guy couldn't really dance anymore, so there was nothing that anyone could do. Still, it was all extremely sad.

A Contestant Is Injured on 'So You Think You Can Dance' -- Will He Survive? We've got a man down on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox).

[Spoiler alert.]

Top-rated dancer Alex Wong suffered a foot injury during the rehearsals for tonight's episode, and was unable to perform. He ruptured his Achilles tendon, and may not be able to continue on the show. The judges expressed regret, but instantly placed Alex in the dreaded "Bottom Three" -- meaning that he could be voted off at any time. And even if Alex isn't eliminated by the viewers, if he doesn't recover from his injury by next week, then he'll be automatically kicked off the program.

Okay, so: two questions. Is it fair to punish Alex for not being able to dance? And do you think he'll be able to recover? He was doing so well up until now.

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 23rd 2010 2:00PM
Alex Wong & Allison HolkerLast week, the competition began on 'So You Think You Can Dance,' and along with it came some pretty astonishing praise for one of the contestants. Alex Wong was paired with "All-Star" Allison Holker on a Sonya Tayeh contemporary piece, and he proved that he is definitely one of the best dancers of the season.

Judge Mia Michaels went so far as to claim that he had just performed the single greatest performance of not only any season of 'So You Think You Can Dance,' but also of any edition of it worldwide. Did Alex's performance really top all of the great and memorable ones from the past?

We chose 10 performances that have stuck with us through the years, most of them resonating so powerfully they've earned names. While impressive and beautifully danced, whether Wong's routine will join this illustrious group will remain to be seen.
