Emily Anne Reed's Old School Charm Buys Her a Ticket to Hollywood (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 9th 2011 11:03PM
'American Idol' auditioners can be bucketed into a few key categories. Run-of-the-mill vocally challenged, weirdos, the semi-good people who make it to Hollywood and you never see again, and the ones you know you'll be seeing for the long haul.

However, Emily Anne Reed defies all those categories.

Reed had the prerequisite sob story that seems to be necessary to score a golden ticket this year, and she also came equipped with some really distinctive chops.

Sounding like a cross between Norah Jones, Duffy and Corinne Bailey Rae -- she's on her way to Hollywood.

Steven Tyler wasn't buying it. J-Lo and Randy Jackson loved her! Once she sang her second song, the judges were convinced she was one to watch.

It will be interesting to see how she stacks up to the rest of the power balladeers who have made it to Hollywood.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

'American Idol' San Francisco Auditions: Kenneth Berba Is 'Tiger Man' (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 9th 2011 10:15PM
San Francisco was the last city on the search for America's next 'Idol' and the costumes people wore to audition day were just par for the course in the City by the Bay.

For a split second, Kenneth Berba bounced into our living rooms. It felt almost like a cross between Tigger and a "Frosted Flakes" box coming to life. Either way, he was in and out of our conscious minds before we knew it.

His horrible performance was followed by Weston Lee Smith, who set the bar at an all new low -- with less tiger, of course.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on Fox.

American Idol Auditions: San Francisco Recap

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 9th 2011 10:00PM
The last stop on 'American Idol's' audition tour proved to be a redeeming one. After a spotty run from coast to coast, it looks like the odds are in favor of season 10's winner coming from the San Francisco auditions.

Over 9,000 showed up to audition in the city a mere 500 miles outside of the elusive Hollywood. And a good number of tonight's featured contestants made it through. Not surprising though, considering the amount of 'Gong Show' throwbacks we've had to sit through this season.

Something Pitchy 'Idol' Show: L.A. Auditions Worst Episode of 'American Idol' Ever?

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 4th 2011 2:30PM
Call us a tough crowd but myself and veteran 'Idol' commentator Rickey Yaneza found last night's Los Angeles auditions close to unwatchable.

Aside from a few promising candidates, namely Tim Halperin and Karen Rodriguez, the hour veered more towards the mentally disturbed than the musically gifted.

Check out what we have to say about the unstoppable Tynisha Roches' "in your face" approach to auditioning and Arkansas' Cooper Robinson's relentless assault on our eardrums -- and sanity.

We also weigh in on the MySpace factor and look ahead to San Francisco and, finally, Hollywood next week!

'American Idol' L.A. Auditions Forecast: Human Tornado! (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 3rd 2011 11:40PM

It may never rain in Southern California, but that sure doesn't stop a human tornado from blowing through the 'American Idol' L.A. auditions.

And as most people know in L.A., there's no lack of "special" people.

Cuckoo Cooper Robinson is more than special, hailing from a very dangerous part of Arkansas in the snake infested woods. One really doesn't need to hear Cooper singing I Feel Good' to wonder what on earth is making Cooper feel so good.

And like Tynisha Roches, Cooper has the 'Idol' judges running for cover and speechless, while assuring America that he will take over Hollywood because, quite simply, he is better looking than a pig, cow, a hog, giraffe, chicken, snake and wait for it ... Gee-raff.

Gee-raffing out loud!

'American Idol' Auditioner Matt Frankel's 'Stats' Are Questionable (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 3rd 2011 11:30PM

Matt "Big Lies Stats" Frankel brings some questionable facts into his audition. Like for example, he claims he produces records with millions of artists and that he has a compilation album with Chaka Khan.

Google it: Michael Scott Frankel Productions.

He's got great connections in this industry too! His number one marketing vehicle is his bus pass.

Not only does he have business savvy as the CEO of his own company, he has come to the 'American Idol' to rap and sing!

The funniest part of this audition is when it was time to vote:Randy Jackson had his resounding "NO!" and Steven Tyler had "Ack!"

"Big Stats" also had the theory that Jackson hated him because he's not related to Michael Jackson.

Wow. At the very least, that's one possibly true stat.

Tynisha Roches Chases Randy Jackson With Microphone (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 3rd 2011 10:35PM

Adele told us a thing or two about 'Chasing Pavements,' TLC said don't chase 'Waterfalls,' and tonight 'American Idol' L.A. has taught us not to chase Randy Jackson with a microphone.

Tynisha Roches had made it through the MySpace 'American Idol' auditions and trekked all the way from Hoboken, New Jersey, to sing her version of Frank Sinatra's 'My Way' at the auditions.

If she couldn't make it in Hoboken, making it in L.A. in front of the judges looks even bleaker.

That really didn't stop Roches from bringing out her best Jersey Shore, belting out "you'll love me," whilst chasing Randy to let her into Hollywood.

Ahh, Tynisha, you may be in a city filled with stars -- but being on 'Idol' just isn't in yours.

Sshh, America! Don't Tell Isaac Rodriguez's Mom He Quit College for 'Idol' (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 3rd 2011 10:29PM

Dedication is blinding. And when you're also tone deaf, that can be problematic.

For Isaac Rodriguez, neither characteristic will stop him from having his fifteen-seconds of 'American Idol' fame. Now meeting a slightly less qualified singer is not the interesting part about this audition.

It seems that Rodriguez had come to the audition armed with gross indifference and his very proud parents, who can't seem to be more tickled that their son is in college and trying out for 'American Idol.'

Except, whoops, he's not in college. In fact, he dropped out for 'Idol." But in this clip, we learn that he's not going to Hollywood either!

'American Idol's' Tim Halperin Is 1000th Contestant to Admit J.Lo Crush (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 3rd 2011 10:12PM
Hollywood might be a proverbial "thirty mile zone," but it seems geography is not a barrier of entry for auditioners.

The Los Angeles stop included auditions submitted on MySpace; you know, the "space" that everyone vacated for Facebook.

Today happens to be Chinese New Year, and on this day it's best to only say positive, nice things about everyone. So tonight, I will definitely try.

One positive thing about 'American Idol' this year is that being a stalker isn't a negative. In fact, it might mean you're one step closer to going to Hollywood! After yesterday's performance from Courtney Penry, today's stalker du jour is Tim Halperin, who has nothing but a sweet tone and googly eyes for J.Lo.

Check out his serenade and her doting stare in this video clip.

'American Idol' Auditions: Los Angeles Recap

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 3rd 2011 10:02PM
I'm scared. Seriously.

After Austin's paltry offerings you might think Los Angeles, the showbiz capital of the world, would have more to offer than a man of questionable mental capacity in a feathered hat and wearing a costume adorned with bells, dancing to his own bizarre rendition of a James Brown tune.

Maybe we've come to expect too much of America's number one TV talent show.

Something Pitchy 'Idol' Show: Austin Auditions and Steven Tyler's Apology Equally Underwhelming

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 3rd 2011 5:30PM
With just three more cities to go, our hopes were high for the Texas capital. However, the pickings were uncharacteristically slim for a state that's known for doing it big.

Check out what we had to say about melodica master Casey Abrams' breakout performance and cowboy cougar-bait John Wayne Schulz' chances against another country-fied favorite, Scott McCreery.

And, of course, we touch on Steven Tyler's -- or, rather, the producers' -- pointless apology. As always, thanks to Rickey Yaneza of Rickey.org for getting "pitchy" with us!

'American Idol' Fake Apologizes for Steven Tyler's Behavior (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 2nd 2011 11:28PM

Steven Tyler has been acting completely odd on this season of 'American Idol.' So when the producers announced they would be making an apology on his behalf, it got us all thinking about things we kind of expect apologies for:

1. Tyler's wacky demeanor, hitting on any semi-attractive female auditioner.
2. Tyler's inability to *NOT* sing along with an auditioner.
3. Tyler's uncanny ability to be supportive towards auditioners who are clearly horrifyingly untalented.

Alas, the entire country was had, as this urgent apology situation turned out to be one big publicity dud.

Watch the apology for yourself and see what we mean.

Casey Abrams Is 'American Idol's' 'Melodica Man'! (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 2nd 2011 11:01PM
Apparently, the 'American Idol' producers love to save the best for last. But when we first encountered Casey Abrams with his wacky hair and melodica in tow -- we weren't sure what to expect.

In fact, Steven Tyler actually accused Abrams of bringing a flashlight into his audition. But it was clear once Casey put the bizarre instrument down, he meant business.

He don't need no doctor. Nor did he need his afro or his melodica. Casey Abrams came with stellar rhythm and soul, flashing a light towards his path to Hollywood.

'American Idol' Unleashes Seven Foot Armadillo in Austin (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 2nd 2011 10:47PM

It's not good enough to just suck on your audition for 'American Idol.'

Sure, we're all waiting for the second coming of William Hung or Sanjaya, but sometimes coming dressed to the audition as a seven-foot tall armadillo works too.

The craziest thing about this armadillo's audition is her annoyance that the schtick didn't get her through.

Really?! No one who comes dressed in full costume ever leaves with a ticket to Hollywood.

Ryan Seacrest's Crazy Chicken Dance Stalker Is Hollywood Bound! (VIDEO)

by Elizabeth Chan, posted Feb 2nd 2011 10:37PM

Courtney Penry demonstrated just what it takes to love Ryan Seacrest. Apparently, it involved doing "the chicken dance." The 'American Idol' producers need to increase Ryan Seacrest's security detail after letting his No 1 stalker through to Hollywood.

You might be able to get past the fact that Seacrest didn't seem to care and ignored her tears after meeting him, but the chicken dance might just be unforgivable.

Luckily, Penry also had the pipes to back up her 'Looney Tunes' ride to Tinseltown.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.
