Jay Leno and the missed opportunity

by Allison Waldman, posted Jan 18th 2010 1:15PM
jay_leno_the_tonight_showIt's been quite an amazing time at NBC the past ten days. The Jay Leno exit from prime time. The proposed 11:35-12:05-1:05 juggle. Conan's manifesto to the people of the earth. NBC executives lashing out and labeling Conan a failure and chicken-hearted. Jeff Zucker threatening Conan and his intellectual properties. And then the subsiding tide that will have The Tonight Show regressing, possibly becoming less an American television institution and more an American artifact of a time gone by.

Lost amid all this wrangling and back and forth is one fact that is undeniable. When NBC came up with the idea of all-Leno, all the time at 10 p.m. prime time, the network was giving him a precious gift. Jay Leno had been given Aladdin's lamp. NBC handed him an hour -- five hours -- of prime time television with an open invitation to create a new show. Imagine if that offer were made to another performer.

TV-wise, this isn't the most wonderful time of the year

by Bob Sassone, posted Dec 28th 2009 1:30PM
retro tvSo we're in that dead time of the TV season when there's really not much on. Everything seems to be a repeat on the networks (not just prime time but game shows and talk shows during the day, too) or your favorite show isn't on at all.

There could be a silver lining in all of this though. Since your favorite shows are in repeats or aren't on, why not take this opportunity to watch a show you've never seen before? For example, tonight's CBS comedy lineup of How I Met Your Mother, Accidentally on Purpose, Two and a Half Men, and Big Bang Theory are all repeats, so why not check out House if you've never seen it before? Sounds good in theory (big bang or otherwise), though I'm not sure if people think like that with their TV show watching.

Charles Schulz's family not thrilled with PBS doc - VIDEO

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 9th 2007 6:03PM

Charles SchulzI'll say right up front that I am a huge Charles Schulz fan. I think Peanuts is one of the most important things in the history of pop culture (not just comics, but in all of pop culture - film, literature, TV, music and art). It's the type of comic that's entertaining and fun for all of the obvious reasons but something that can also show you a little bit about how to live your life too. I mean, who doesn't like Snoopy or A Charlie Brown Christmas?

So I've been a little antsy about a new biography of Schulz that is coming out next week, Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography, by David Michaelis. It's a bio that supposedly gives a fuller picture of Schulz, including the sad, unhappy parts of his life. Now I see that I'm not the only one who is a little antsy about the book and a new American Masters that will profile Schulz too.

American Masters profiles photographer Annie Leibovitz

by Adam Finley, posted Dec 28th 2006 11:01AM

john lennon yoko onoOn January 3 at 7pm, the PBS series American Masters will profile famous photographer Annie Leibovitz, who has provided us with some of the most striking and memorable images of the past few decades. Leibovitz is responsible for the Rolling Stone cover featuring Yoko Ono and a naked John Lennon, and has shot equally intriguing photos of other celebs, including Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg and the artist Christo.

Despite her knack for getting her subjects to expose themselves for her photos (both literally and figuratively), Leibovitz's life has remained more or less out of the spotlight. This documentary, shot by her younger sister, will examine Leibovitz's professional and family life as she compiles images for her new book.
