Andy Richter Curses the Universe

by Gary Susman, posted Jan 25th 2010 11:00AM
Did Conan O'Brien's 'Tonight Show' fail because of an Andy Richter curse?

Actually, it probably failed because of a Jeff Zucker curse. But still, what of poor Andy? He seems to have been operating under a perpetual cloud ever since he left Conan's side the first time, when he quit his job as sidekick on 'Late Night With Conan O'Brien' in 2000 for a Hollywood career. He's worked consistently since then, but his list of credits over the last decade consists largely of box office flops and short-lived TV series. To which we can now add 'The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien.'

The Twelve Days of Festivus: Ten shows on DVD

by Nick Zaino, posted Dec 14th 2009 11:29AM
House, M.D. Season FiveOn the tenth day of Festivus, TV gave to me... Ten shows on DVD.

There are plenty of great TV collections being released all the time now, bringing back classic TV, shows that had short runs, and current favorites. You know about most of the big shows, so here's a mix of more popular and some maybe less-heralded collections.

House, M.D.: Season Five: This was a breakout season for the show, where the secondary characters really came to life and House broke down and finally had to face his addictions and personal failings. Season five may wind up being a pinnacle for the series as a whole.

DVD cover art and release date for Andy Barker, P.I.

by Mike Moody, posted Aug 30th 2009 2:10PM
shout factory, dvd, andy barker p.i.I love Andy Richter, but he seems awfully stiff every time I watch him on The Tonight Show. I prefer to remember the guy from his early days on Late Night, his short-lived show Andy Richter Controls the Universe, and his other short-lived show, the hilarious Andy Barker, P.I.

Like Danny reported back in May, Andy Barker, P.I. is finally coming to DVD. Shout! Factory will release the entire series on Nov. 17. The two-disc set will include all six episodes, some with commentary by Richter and producer Conan O'Brien, plus a retrospective feature and a doc about the show's amazing writers, including Jonathan Groff (How I Met Your Mother), Josh Bycel (Psych), and Jane Espenson (Buffy, BSG). Click through for a better look at the DVD cover art.

Andy Barker P.I. coming to DVD

by Danny Gallagher, posted May 1st 2009 11:03AM
Andy Richter in Andy Barker P.I.The DVD shelves have become a heaven of forgotten shows that barely saw the light of day.

Get ready to welcome one that got less sunlight than your goth cousin gets in a year.

The Late Night Insider blog
, the underground blog of the former Late Night with Conan O'Brien, reported that O'Brien and former and returning sidekick Andy Richter are recording commentary tracks for a new Andy Barker P.I. DVD.

Children of Men producer developing new show

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 24th 2007 10:01AM

SlaterChristian Slater is coming back to weekly television.

The actor has signed to star in a new NBC drama called Dirty Little Secrets. He'll play an investigative reporter who tackles the stories that "get swept under the carpet." The show will be produced by Arymyan Bernstein, one of the producers of the acclaimed Clive Owen film Children of Men.

It's good to hear that NBC isn't abandoning scripted shows after canceling so many this season (Kidnapped, Andy Barker, P.I., The Black Donnellys, probably Studio 60, Raines, etc). This new show has an interesting premise. Anything but another reality show or game show, eh?

NBC has plans for a long, uncomfortable summer

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 13th 2007 4:05PM

Biggest LoserNBC may have canceled Andy Barker, P.I., The Black Donnellys, and (probably) Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, but they seem to have a hard on for reality shows, and more are coming this summer.

Returning reality shows include America's Got Talent, which has a new host ... Jerry Springer. Expect the throwing of chairs and DNA tests to be "talents" this season, which starts May 29. The Biggest Loser, which returns for a fourth season late in the summer with new host Allison Sweeney (Days Of Our Lives). It still amazes me that a show about fat people losing weight can be a hit and last for four seasons. Before The Biggest Loser returns, we'll get another season of Last Comic Standing, which will also have a new host, Bill Bellamy. It returns on June 13. And then we have the new show Age of Love, a "new twist on the reality dating show format" (yeah, right). It will be hosted by Mark Consuelos.

This just shows us how accurate Studio 60 was, with that whole plot involving the new VP of alternative programming at NBS pitching a show titled All You Need Is Love. NBC says that Age of Love will be "bringing romance back to television." Oh, I can hardly wait.

Andy Barker, P.I. canceled

Oh, come on!

NBC has canceled Andy Barker, P.I. After airing only four episodes, the network sent the remaining two episodes to Saturdays and Scrubs will air in its place starting this Thursday night (that was already the plan, it's just happening earlier).

This is so depressing. Did anybody see the chicken episode two weeks ago? I howled with laughter over that one. Admittedly, last week's episode wasn't that great. According to The Futon Critic, Barker had its lowest ratings last week with 1.8. I'd like to know what kind of numbers NBC had on its website, where it posted all six episodes of Andy Barker for free before it even premiered on the network.

I just knew that it wasn't going to survive because A) Andy Richter is cursed, B) People wouldn't get it, and C) NBC wasn't going to give it a chance. You have to watch closely to see past the main story of Andy, the naive CPA-turned private investigator and find the humor in the supporting characters. Tony Hale as a video store geek and Marshall Manesh as an Afghani restaurant owner had hilarious lines, but maybe they weren't obvious enough to people.

Catch Amy Sedaris in an online-only episode of Andy Barker, P.I.

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 5th 2007 3:43PM

amy sedarisJulia mentioned previously that Amy Sedaris would be appearing in a guest role on Andy Barker, P.I. Well, Julia wasn't lying, but you won't see the episode on TV. Instead, click on over to NBC's site to see "The Lady Varnishes," in which Sedaris plays a sex-crazed older woman who spent some time in the slammer. Funny, that sounds an awful lot like her Jerri Blank character from Strangers with Candy. The two characters do share similar traits, but who the heck cares, I'd give my left leg to see Sedaris in anything (and that statement will mean more to you after you've watched the episode).

Andy Barker, P.I.: Pilot (series premiere)

(S01E01) I can't help but be afraid for this new series. I think it's great. I think people who enjoy the subtle comedy of The Office and My Name is Earl will also think it's pretty great. ("subtle", by the way, compared to a sitcom where we're told when to laugh) But it's going to take a while for this one to catch on. I can only hope that NBC will give Andy Barker, P.I. a fighting chance the same way it held on to The Office while it found an audience.
