'Today' Welcomes New Co-Host Savannah Guthrie (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 9th 2011 1:55PM
Savannah Guthrie on 'Today'Viewers saw Meredith Vieira's emotional goodbye Wednesday on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC), and Ann Curry's welcome Thursday morning. Perhaps a bit lost in the shuffle was the fact that Savannah Guthrie, a former White House correspondent for NBC and expert for CourtTV, is replacing Curry as a co-host for the show's third hour.

Guthrie's career retrospective started with her talking about quitting her job with a local ABC affiliate to go to law school at Georgetown. The segment also featured Guthrie challenging President Obama at a press conference as part of her "dream job" covering the White House. She seemed just as thrilled about her current gig. "I never dreamed that I would be part of the 'Today' show family," she said.

Hopefully, people will learn her name at this job. The retrospective included a string of clips of people calling her "Samantha," and even one person calling her "Contessa."

Ann Curry Horrified By Old Footage From Her First Day on 'Today' in 1997 (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 9th 2011 1:50PM
Ann Curry on 'Access Hollywood Live'Ann Curry already had to sit through a retrospective of her work Thursday morning on 'Today,' but 'Access Hollywood Live' (weekdays, syndicated on NBC) had another one for her later in the day. Curry talked about how her job, and hairstyle, have changed since her earliest days on 'Today.' She's got a bigger dressing room and better hairstyle now, but has to wake up earlier to prepare for the big-time interviews that happen during 'Today's' first hour.

'Access' showed a clip from her first say on the job at 'Today,' March 11, 1997, and zeroed in on the hair. "Please tell me I look better than that now," Curry pleaded. She had been nervous that first day, she said. "I was so scared, I felt like that guy on 'Broadcast News,' I mean with the dripping of the sweat," referring to Albert Brooks, who played a news writer plagued with horrible flop sweat in the 80's film.

Ann Curry Officially Becomes 'Today' Co-Anchor (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 9th 2011 12:05PM
Ann Curry of 'Today' in her younger reporting daysWednesday's edition of 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) saw a career retrospective and a tearful goodbye for co-anchor Meredith Vieira. Thursday transitioned to a happy welcoming of Ann Curry as she officially assumed her role as co-anchor, succeeding Vieira, complete with a retrospective of her own.

A video segment quickly covered much of Curry's career, from her days as a local reporter, eager to do goofy stunts like jumping into a pool fully clothed, to her introduction to the 'Today' team in 1997, notably by then-anchors Katie Couric and a nicely coiffed Matt Lauer.

Curry feigned embarrassment. "I knew I should have worn deodorant today," she said. "This was hard, today." When Lauer thanked Curry for sharing that info, she gave him a big hug and said she'd share some more if he'd like. Day 1 and Curry's already oversharing! The new gang is off to a great start.

Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery on 'Today'No matter how much they try to deflect, 'American Idol' winner Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alaina continue to have to answer questions about kissing each other on the show finale. At least this morning on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) they got to answer other questions, too, about how their lives might be different after their success on 'Idol.'

McCreery and Alaina appeared together on the show and were shown a photo of McCreery awkwardly kissing the side of Alaina's face. McCreery claimed he was trying to back away. Ann Curry asked them how they are staying grounded after becoming so successful so quickly. Alaina credited their faith.

Meredith Vieira talks about her People cover story on 'Today'People magazine has an exclusive interview and photo shoot with Meredith Vieira this week covering her family life and decision to leave 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC). Ann Curry asked her about it on Wednesday morning's show, complimenting her on the photos and asking Vieira about the discussion between her and her husband Richard in the interview about leaving the show.

"It was very much a family decision," said Vieira. "It had to do with the fact that, you know, right now we're both in good health and want to enjoy ourselves and have a little more flexibility in our lives. But it's still, it's one week from today, and my heart's breaking here, too."

Meredith Vieira Likes James Durbin's Tail (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted May 17th 2011 1:40PM
James Durbin on 'Today'James Durbin said on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) that he felt he was voted off 'American Idol' at the right time. Many were disappointed to see Durbin go, and though he admitted he was blindsided, he said he felt he'd had a "perfect night" during the competition round, and "I really felt like it was kind of my time to go." He got a bit more consolation from Meredith Vieira on today's show.

Al Roker
noted that this was the first time Vieira had ever said she "liked his tail." Ann Curry then picked up and shook a bushy, furry tail Durbin wears attached to his belt and said that's what Vieira was referring to. "No, I actually wasn't talking about that," Vieira said, to the mock embarrassment of all involved.

Vieira felt it was an injustice when Durbin was voted off. Vieira is also leaving 'Today' soon. Perhaps they should launch their own talk show, 'Meredith and the Fox.'

Why Ann Curry Should Be Named the Next 'Today' Anchor ... and Why She Might Not Be

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 6th 2011 4:00PM
Ann CurryOver the years, I've spilled a fair amount of pixels in this space poking fun at Ann Curry. By all accounts, though, she's a top journalist and an overall good egg. One thing she's been over everything else is loyal: She's been in the newsreader role on 'Today' since 1997, and stayed with the no. 1 morning show after she was passed over in favor of Meredith Vieira five years ago.

Now, with word that Vieira and Lauer are likely leaving 'Today' when her contract ends in September, it's time to give Ann Curry the opportunity to anchor the show on a permanent basis, and not just for the 14-year apprenticeship she's put in as the newsreader. It's the smartest move for NBC to make in order to keep the show at the top of the heap.

Of course, now that we've given her the job ... does she want it? Some of the things she's said and done in the past make me wonder. More on that -- and some speculation on who else might get the job -- after the jump.

Matt Lauer Pulls Off Snakes-in-a-Can April Fools' Day Prank (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Apr 1st 2011 12:00PM
Matt Lauer and Ann Curry on 'Today'Matt Lauer did the impossible this morning on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) by pulling off the old "snakes in a can" trick for April Fools' Day. By now, just about anyone handed a can of something to open on April Fool's Day should assume they were going to get smacked in the face with spring-loaded snakes. Not 'Today' host Ann Curry.

Lauer did a good job setting it up, saying there was a controversy over a new potato chip can. "It's supposed to be like a child guard tube," he said. "Some people say it is too hard to open, proving frustrating." He then handed the can to Curry, who gave a little shout and jumped when a purple snake uncoiled.

While his luck is good, Lauer may want to employ a dribble cup, a whoopee cushion, and ask Curry to pull his finger.

The 16 Most Accomplished 'Real' Women on TV Right Now

by Joel Keller, posted Mar 16th 2011 1:30PM
Oprah WinfreyA couple of weeks ago, we gave you the list of the 100 most memorable female characters in TV history. There was lots of talk and conjecture among the readers about who we missed and who shouldn't have been there, which is why we do these lists to begin with.

But there were a fair number of people who asked us "Where's Ellen DeGeneres?" or "Where's Oprah?" among others. Well, since we were talking about TV characters and not real people, those folks had to be left off the list (And, yes, we know Ellen played a pretty important TV character ... more on this later.)

Fear not, loyal TV watchers. We've got a list for those of you who want to celebrate women who put themselves out there, have created a brand, or have made significant contributions to the current TV landscape as themselves and not a fictional character.

The list isn't in any particular order; after the first few obvious names, the rest of the women on this list come so close, it's hard to rank them. So we'll just start with TV's most accomplished woman (hint: her name starts with an O ... and it ain't Omarosa) and go from there.

On 'The O'Reilly Factor' (weekdays, 8PM ET on Fox News), Bill O'Reilly was critiquing a clip of Willie Geist, Ann Curry and Jenna Bush Hager dancing on 'Today' when he made a surprising revelation.

"I was on the set of 'Glee' last night," O'Reilly disclosed. "And after seeing those professionals, and that ... pretty frightening. And I want to thank all of the 'Glee' people for being so nice to us."

O'Reilly has taken shots at 'Glee' in the past, once accusing the show of indoctrinating the nation's youth with liberal values. And 'Glee' responded with an episode featuring a newsman character who seemed to be parodying O'Reilly.
