Al Roker and Ann Curry Dance During Commercial Break (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Apr 20th 2010 2:00PM
Al Roker and Ann Curry are caught dancing to Bobby Darin's 'Mack the Knife' during a commercial break on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC).

Roker shows off some surprisingly nimble dance moves, until he spins Curry and she falls back on the show couch. Unperturbed, Roker dances solo. But then, perhaps wanting payback, Curry interrupts Roker's groove by pulling him down beside her.

'Today' Anchors Drink Seaweed Juice (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Apr 16th 2010 12:30PM
Sure, seaweed juice sounds healthy, but at what cost? The answer became immediately apparent as Matt Lauer and Ann Curry sampled a batch of the stuff and found it not to their liking on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC).

During a segment on strange new foods, Lauer tries the drink first, but then quickly puts it down. "You know, you have to be careful here, because I don't want to hurt whatever company this is," Lauer said, after initially being at a loss for words. "I'm sure they're nice. It's just not my taste."

Al Roker Gets Crude With Nick Offerman on 'Today' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Apr 15th 2010 3:30PM
During an appearance on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC), Nick Offerman of 'Parks and Recreation' discussed his hobby of woodworking and a nude New York magazine photo spread in which he appeared with wife Megan Mullally. Seeing an opportunity for a double entendre, Al Roker then commented on Offerman's "wood." You can probably guess how things went from there.

"Just missed showing the wood," Roker said, after viewing the naked photo.

"I'm sorry," Ann Curry apologized. "The show was fine until that moment."

Ann Curry Gets Frisky With Todd English on 'Today' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Apr 9th 2010 1:30PM
It seems Ann Curry loves a man who can cook, because she got a tad frisky with chef Todd English on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC).

During a cooking segment with English, Curry first makes a comment about how size matters (when it comes to artichokes), seems to briefly forget that she's married, then professes her love for English after he puts the finishing touches on a dish. Curry's husband doesn't have to worry, though; the anchor's banter with English seems playfully innocent.

Tori Spelling Shoots Down Divorce Rumors (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 5th 2010 3:00PM
Tori SpellingTori Spelling stopped by 'Today' (weekdays at 7AM on NBC) to clear the air on divorce rumors that have been making the rounds.

Ann Curry asked the star of 'Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood' about the recent clips -- like this one here at AOL TV -- that portray Spelling and Dean McDermott in a little bit of a tiff.

"Well, we do a reality show ... when I signed up for this I said, 'I'm going to put it all out there, because otherwise I don't believe in doing them,'" Spelling said. "It's a real relationship ... we're not headed for divorce, we're committed to each other, we're committed to this family."

Ann Curry Compares 'Today' Producer to a Dog (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Mar 31st 2010 4:30PM
After a story on a Border Collie who hides in a ditch and does frantic, high-speed spins each time a car passes, Ann Curry causes a commotion by comparing the dog to a show producer on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC).

"Actually, he reminds me of Don Nash every time a big story happens," Curry said, comparing the dog to 'Today's' Senior Broadcast Producer. A collective groan goes up after Curry makes her comment, followed by an awkward pause. "That's going to hurt me later," she added.

Al Roker Reacts to Lady Gaga Parody Called 'Al Roker Face' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Mar 25th 2010 11:30AM
Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry surprise Al Roker with a YouTube parody of a Lady Gaga song called 'Al Roker Face' on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC).

In this send-up of Gaga's second single 'Poker Face,' a singer in a platinum wig sings a loving ode to the weatherman. "Okay, I think we've seen enough of that," said a mortified Roker. But, Vieira and Curry don't stop there; they then perform an impromptu dance around the weatherman complete with hand gestures.

Ann Curry Talks Hobby as a Photographer (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Mar 18th 2010 2:00PM
Ann Curry is not only a respected TV journalist and news anchor, she's also an accomplished photographer who's taken many photos in her travels as a reporter. Curry spoke on how her hobby brings her inner peace, and shared an intimate photo of Al Roker and son Nick during a segment on 'Today' (weekdays, 9AM ET on NBC).

"I feel so lucky that I found something that has given me peace, even in the worst of circumstances. And it makes me know that all of us can find peace, even in the chaos of our own lives," Curry said. "If [only] we can find that one thing that we care so much about ... And, for me, it's taking pictures."

And So It Begins: 'Today's' Annoying Olympics Coverage

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 12th 2010 12:29PM
Roker and Lauer on the two-man luge at the 2006 Torino OlympicsAlthough I'm generally a 'Today' show loyalist, for the next two weeks, I'm going to be a 'Good Morning America' fan.

Why? Three words: The Winter Olympics.

Every two years, since NBC started carrying the Olympics, they turn their top-rated morning news show into essentially the Games' morning recap show. Sure, you still get that first half hour of pure news, but after that, the show becomes all-Olympics, all the time, from examining the personal stories of the athletes, to travelogues about whatever exotic locale the Games are in that year, to deep, 'SportsCenter'-like examination of the previous night's results.

But that's not the part that annoys me the most. When the hosts go out and try to do the Olympic sports themselves, the cringe factor goes up exponentially. Especially when Matt Lauer and Al Roker are involved.

Ann Curry is so... Ann Curry-ish

by Joel Keller, posted Oct 15th 2009 8:24PM
Meredith Viera / Ann Curry
NBC just sent me a series of photos showing the interviews that will be conducted during the network's "A Woman's Nation" series. As part of the series, NBC, CNBC and MSNBC personalities will interview each other about "the state of women in American life," as the accompanying press release has stated.

In most of the pics, the pairs -- Andrea Mitchell/Rachel Maddow, Kathie Lee Gifford/Jenna Bush Hager, Mika Brzezinski/Hoda Kotb, Natalie Morales/Suze Orman -- sit on the comfy chairs, legs crossed. As you can see from the pic above, Ann Curry, who's paired up with Meredith Vieira, wants to be different: shoes off, feet tucked under her rear end. She's really into this conversation, know what I mean? She's listening. She's comfortable.

It's so Ann Curry, isn't it?

Ann Curry: Today's lovable nut talks about climbing Kilimanjaro

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 10th 2008 8:05PM
Ann Curry climbs KilimanjaroSomething about Today's Ann Curry has always struck me as odd. Don't get me wrong; she seems like a nice woman and a hell of a journalist. But something about the way she answers questions, how she gets chummy and touchy-feely with people she's just met, and how she always chooses to go on needlessly life-threatening assignments makes me think that she's not quite all there.

Her November climb up Mount Kilimanjaro furthered this notion. Yes, it was nice to see how the glaciers on the African mountain were affected by climate change, but couldn't we have seen it using an airplane and a high-powered spy camera? Did Ann and her crew really need to climb the toughest route up the mountain during the most treacherous time of the year to get the story?

Well, it was absolutely necessary, as she tells TV Week in an entertainingly wacky interview about the assignment.

Election Night: NBC (Part 2)

by Joel Keller, posted Nov 4th 2008 11:02PM
NBC election
They're dyin' to call this for Obama, aren't they? (In fact, they just did at 11 PM ET) In our last update, NBC called Pennsylvania for Obama before barely any votes were counted, then they were on top of Ohio like lions on a limping elk. According to their board, the big O has over 200 electoral votes already, whereas the New York Times website says Obama only has 159. Do the networks have better exit poll data than the Times or are they just too eager to wrte the conclusion to The Obama Story? It's anyone's guess. At least they're not falling all over themselves to call it based on Ohio, like other sites are doing.

More observations:
  • From the girlfriend: "Ann Curry looks foxy! Well, she does!" I agree. Curry's rockin' the boots on the virtual set tonight.
  • They showed the green room again at 9:30. BriWi's doing it for "full disclosure," but when the graphics turn off, Curry ends up looking so lonely in there.
  • Speaking of which, Curry told Brian Williams that "she felt like she was in a video game," then her Sincerity Chip kicked in and she added "Whatever it takes to get the information out to people, Brian." Sure, because phony columns, fake birds, and spinning graphics are the only way to do that.

Election Night: NBC (Part 1)

by Joel Keller, posted Nov 4th 2008 9:20PM
NBC election headquarters
Thankfully, NBC has decided once again to do different election coverage than their kissing cousins at MSNBC. So instead of David Gregory trying to moderate slap fights between Keith Olbermann, Joe Scarborough, and Chris Matthews, we get the relatively dignified analysis of Brian Williams, Chuck Todd, Tom Brokaw, Andrea Mitchell and Ann Curry. Whew. Looks like I selected the right network.

Some observations from the first couple of hours of coverage:
  • Chuck Todd really has to shave his goatee. Yes, it was nice for awhile. But he might be the host of Meet the Press after this election is over; how can any one take him seriously with that "look, Ma, I can grow a beard!" look?
  • Ann Curry is doing exit polling in a green room. Not a green screen, mind you, but an entire green room. It's freaky. Williams wanted to assure us that Curry was safe from those flying graphics. Nice of him.
  • Does Williams have to remind us of his blue-collar, fire-fightin', hard-drinkin' past at every turn? "It's probably not a good thing that I know where Finnegans' Wake (a bar in Philly that's Obama's HQ there) is" he says to Mike Taibbi. Thanks for the insight into your past, Bri.

Kathy Lee Gifford co-hosting Today's fourth hour?

Kathie Lee GiffordIs Kathie Lee Gifford coming back to daytime? Does Regis know; does he care? Well, whatever the case with Reeg, there is talk that La Kathie Lee may be ready for a new talk show gig. In the Hollywood Reporter, Today executive producer Jim Bell said Kathie Lee Gifford is on the short list as a co-host for the fourth hour of the show. "I think she's a great talent," he said of KLG, while adding that other names are in the hopper as well.
