James Franco Races (and Screams) for Oscar Glory on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 3rd 2010 4:50AM
James Franco Races (and Screams) for Oscar Glory on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live'It's been announced that James Franco will be hosting this year's Oscars, along with Anne Hathaway. This is a little unexpected, but the two of them aren't the most unusual hosting picks. Plus, Mr. Franco has been doing a lot of unexpected stuff lately, from appearing on a soap opera, to writing a book of short stories, to starring in a movie where he's trapped under a rock for a very, very long time.

In addition, James seems really excited about this whole thing! So excited, in fact, that he can't contain his enthusiasm on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (weeknights, 12AM ET on ABC). While talking with Jimmy Kimmel, James requests a favor. Jimmy's studio is right across the street from the Kodak Theatre, where the Oscars will be held. So Franco asks if he can just step away from the interview desk for a second.

Then, James suddenly breaks into a jog. But wait -- what's this? He's headed the wrong way! The theatre is in the other direction! Still, he is showing a lot of ... enthusiasm. We can't find fault with him there.

Why James Franco and Anne Hathaway Could Be Great Oscar Hosts

by Joel Keller, posted Nov 29th 2010 4:15PM
Anne Hathaway and James Franco were named hosts of the 83rd Academy Awards in Feburary 2011
Being the host the Academy Awards is a job that's scrutinized almost as much as being President of the United States.

It's a strange notion when you think about it, mainly because the host's job is to do an "opening act," usually involving a musical number or comedic monologue, then basically step out of the way while the presenters and performers traipse across the Kodak Theatre stage and give out Oscars. If the host lets loose an occasional quip while introducing a presenter or a Best Song nominee, all the better. But, after the first half hour of the show, the host really doesn't matter all that much.

So, when the news broke that James Franco and Anne Hathaway have been selected to host the 83rd Academy Awards on February 27, my reaction was pretty much "why the hell not?" Oscar hosting is such a crapshoot that pretty much anyone the Academy and producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer would have picked had an equal chance to shine or stink.

But Hathaway and Franco could be an inspired choice if things break right, for a number of reasons:

'SNL' Takes on the Prince William/Kate Middleton Engagement (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 22nd 2010 2:50AM
'SNL' Takes on the Prince William/Kate Middleton EngagementMeeting the grandparents is always difficult. Especially when you're engaged to the future King of England. And especially when the grandparents you're meeting are Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. And especially when you're just a mere "commoner" yourself.

On the new 'SNL' (Sat., 11:30PM ET on NBC), the show takes on the engagement of British heir-to-the-throne Prince William. After eight years of dating, William finally got engaged to "regular girl" Kate Middleton, his girlfriend.

The long delay between dating and making wedding plans earned Kate the cruel nickname of "Waity Katie" from the English press. But that's nothing compared to the cruel reception that Middleton (played by Anne Hathaway) gets from the royal family on 'Saturday Night Live.'

'Saturday Night Live' - Anne Hathaway / Florence and the Machine Recap (VIDEO)

['Saturday Night Live' - 'Season 36, Episode 7']

According to Dylan from 'Modern Family,' Anne Hathaway is "everywoman," and I'm finding it difficult to disagree with him. After being heralded as the second coming of Julia Roberts, both in talent and looks, she went on to live up to that billing.

How does one get out from under such a looming and intimidating comparison? One goes out and makes a name for oneself as a versatile and nimble performer, on a stage one's predecessor has yet to grace. Enter 'SNL,' and Anne Hathaway's return to hosting duties, a stage that not just "everywoman" can fill.

Fallon, Anne Hathaway 'Geek Out' Over 'The Simpsons' and Her Emmy Win (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Nov 19th 2010 4:40AM
Anne Hathaway Talks 'Simpsons' Emmy on 'Late Night'When Anne Hathaway visited 'Late Night' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC), Jimmy Fallon deviated from all the nudity talk to discuss her Emmy win. The actress won a Best Voice-Over Emmy for her role as Princess Penelope on 'The Simpsons.'

"Doing 'The Simpsons' is like winning an award -- I know that sounds cheesy, but it's really true," said Hathaway. "I've loved the show [and] watched it since [it was on] 'Tracey Ullman.'"

"I got to do the table read with the whole cast, and so I got to actually watch everybody do all the characters," she said gleefully. Fallon responded with equal excitement about the series. Hathaway then felt bad for forcing the studio audience to watch them "geek out" about the show. But not bad enough to change the subject.

Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal Discuss the Complexities of Filming Nude Scenes (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Nov 18th 2010 1:51PM
Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal on 'Today'If you have a talk show and haven't yet asked Jake Gyllenhaal and/or Anne Hathaway about the nude scenes in their new film, 'Love & Other Drugs,' then you are falling way behind. Meredith Vieira took her turn this morning on 'Today' (Weekdays, 7AM on NBC) and asked both stars about a scene in the trailer where Hathaway enters Gyllenhaal's apartment and drops her coat, revealing that she's naked to both Gyllenhaal and his surprised roommate.

Hathaway proceeded to tell a funny story about a surprise that happened while filming that scene on set. Hathaway entered the room, dropped her coat, and only then realized they were just rehearsing. "All of a sudden I notice that Jake is in his pants, Josh isn't wearing his costume, and I realize, we're rehearsing."

Gyllenhaal and Hathaway said they have both made their peace with occasional on-screen nudity being a part of their jobs. Gyllenhaal mentioned that the pair had already filmed a love scene together in 'Brokeback Mountain,' which eased the awkwardness this time around.

We can also report, with some degree of certainty, that everyone in the movie was probably at least partially naked when getting dressed in their trailers before the shoot.

Not only did the actress tell the St. Louis Fox affiliate that she wants to appear on Murphy's hit show, she already has a character and musical number in mind.

"I would want to be Kurt's aunt," Hathaway said during the press junket for her new movie, 'Love and Other Drugs." "I have thought about it! ... I would like to pitch to Ryan Murphy right now that I go on as Kurt's aunt, his mother who is deceased's younger sister."

Anne Hathaway Dishes on Getting Naked With Jake Gyllenhaal (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Mar 3rd 2010 7:28AM
Jimmy Kimmel, Anne HathawayWe imagine it's probably not that hard to make Anne Hathaway blush. On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (weeknights, 12:05AM ET on ABC), Jimmy Kimmel had no trouble with that task when he brought up a super-long sex scene she had to do with Jake Gyllenhaal for 'Love and Other Drugs.'

So, picture them naked for three weeks during the filming, "and he seemed kind of horny after it, to be honest," said Kimmel.

Hathaway had more artful things to say about it. "It's a really beautiful, emotional love story ... and, yeah, we went there." We've heard it's ultra-awkward filming love scenes, but there are probably worse ways to make a living than getting naked with a nice-looking person for three weeks.

An apology to The Simpsons

by Nick Zaino, posted Jan 11th 2010 9:00AM
The SimpsonsForgive me, Simpsons, but I don't watch you as often as I used to. I'm not sure when it happened, but at some point, watching The Simpsons slipped from an every-week ritual to catch as catch can.

I'm sure I'm not unusual in that respect. I'm sure there are people who were with The Simpsons from those very first shaky frames, who saw them adopt No. 9 and laughed at Homer botching Christmas songs on the closing credits, and faithfully watched for several years, maybe even a decade before they dropped off.

But one of the best things about the show is, you can always come back. The Simpsons never forget. Yesterday's episode and the 20th Anniversary Special that followed was a nice reminder of that. The episode wasn't the funniest I've seen, but I did realize there has never been an episode of the show that wasn't worth at least a few laughs.

Review: The Simpsons - Once Upon a Time in Springfield

by Jason Hughes, posted Jan 10th 2010 11:44PM
The Simpsons: Once Upon a Time in Sprinfield
Touted as the 450th episode of the series, this episode was a Krusty-centric episode. Billed as part of The Simpsons 20th anniversary celebration, "Once Upon a Time in Springfield" was followed by Morgan Spurlock's hour-long Simpsons special, meaning that 75% of FOX's prime-time Sunday night lineup this week Matt Groening, instead of Seth MacFarlane; only The Cleveland Show made the cut.

This week also featured the return of Anne Hathaway, playing the character of Princess Penelope, a sudden co-host to Krusty's television show in an attempt to appeal to a wider demographic. As you can imagine, a character inspired by the Disney Princesses line can't sit well with Krusty's core (Bart and Milhouse) type of audience.

Bullock, who bested Jennifer Aniston, Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Drew Barrymore for the award, responded with a Woods joke of her own during her acceptance speech, then pointed out the eerie similarities between her hairdo and Nicole Kidman's.
