Are Networks Saving the Best New Shows for Midseason?
by Maggie Furlong, posted Sep 13th 2011 9:00AM
Here we are: Fall TV premiere week. There are some exciting shows slated for fall, including 'Person of Interest' (CBS' Michael Emerson-Jim Caviezel procedural with a twist), 'Up All Night' (NBC's relatable new comedy starring Will Arnett, Christina Applegate and Maya Rudolph), 'Pan Am' (ABC's swinging '60s drama set in the world of mile-high espionage), 'Secret Circle' ('The Vampire Diaries' boss Kevin Williamson's answer to witches) and 'Terra Nova' (Fox's ambitious time-travel dinosaur drama, pictured), just to name a few.
But some of the most buzzed-about shows are being held for January 2012 and beyond, and we're not the only ones taking note.
We gathered a group of esteemed critics to pick their favorite new dramas and comedies -- check out all our videos here -- and the conversation changed completely when we opened the selection up to include midseason offerings as well.
So, as much as people are probably over this common fill-in-the-blank statement, I'm saying it: This year, midseason is definitely the new fall. Check it out ...
ABC Pilots Snap Judgment: Our First Reactions to the New Shows
by Maggie Furlong, posted Jun 1st 2011 12:00PM
We've seen the network's new fall pilots, and while they're not for review -- things often change drastically before the shows are set to premiere -- we do want to share our first reactions with you. This is designed to get you excited for some new shows ... and to warn you to curb your enthusiasm for others. Just keep in mind that we'll have full reviews of the final pilots closer to airdate, in the fall or midseason. For now, here are our snap judgments of all of ABC's new shows for the 2011-2012 TV season.
There are 12 shows total -- the good ('Good Christian Belles'), the bad ('Charlie's Angels') and the ugly men dressed as women (cross-dressing comedy 'Work It') -- and plenty of varying opinions from Mo Ryan, Maggie Furlong, Jean Bentley, Chris Harnick, Kim Potts and Alexis Moore.
Here's how we're breaking these down:
Watch It - awesome show, can't wait for more
Skip It - it's either horrible or just totally not their thing
DVR It - there's potential, will give it a second chance
James Van Der Beek Crashes the Naked Wizard's Web Redemption on 'Tosh.0' (VIDEO)
by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 1st 2011 3:19AM
This week's redemption featured a surprise guest star on 'Tosh.0' (Wed., 10PM ET on Comedy Central). In what turned out to be a very naked episode, it was appropriately the Naked Wizard's turn for redemption -- or rather, ridicule -- at the hands of Daniel Tosh. His journey to infamy began when he took off a wizard costume at a music festival. The video of his getting tasered by the police for refusing to get dressed went viral, and subsequent editors added a tiny dot over his genitalia to emphasize his size there.
Tying it all together, Tosh took him on a 'Wizard of Oz'-inspired journey to get a bigger penis and maybe meet Paul McCartney. But, just like in the movie, the wizard proved to be a man behind a curtain. Only this time that man was James Van Der Beek.
Look Who's Back! '90s Stars Return to TV
by Stephanie Earp, posted May 30th 2011 4:00PM
With the US networks' upfronts completed, it's time for us TV writers to start picking out trends from the announcements. Is the crime drama dying? Is comedy 'back'? One trend for 2011's fall TV that's hard to miss is the return of a large handful of '90s and early 2000s TV stars who've been away from the small screen. It's sort of like all the popular kids from high school went off to college, where they majored in things like the comedy-horror movie, highly publicized relationships and dubious art house films, and now they're back -- a little older, a little wiser and with way better hair. Welcome home, kids.
