Bruce Davison, Larry Bryggman Join Daytime Soaps

by Allison Waldman, posted May 27th 2010 10:40AM
bruce_davison_headshotThere are some big-name actors headed to the world of soaps this summer -- Bruce Davison on 'General Hospital' and Larry Bryggman on 'As the World Turns,' according to the latest reports.

Davison is a familiar face to movie lovers, having previously appeared in 'X Men' and 'Longtime Companion,' for which he received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination in 1990. Now, he'll be appearing on 'General Hospital' for a three-episode arc, which will coincide with James Franco's highly anticipated return. In it, he will play Wilhelm Van Schlagel, Franco's art dealer from Europe. (Is it just me or does that sound like one of Luke's con-artist guises? That might be a great twist in the Davison bit if it's somehow connected to Luke's grifter games.)

Franco's return kicks off on Jun. 30, so watch for Davison shortly thereafter.

Recent Soap Recasts ...The Good, the Bad and the Inspired

by Allison Waldman, posted May 15th 2010 11:15AM
Sonny_Michael_General_Hospital_ABC'General Hospital' – Sonny's sons Michael and Morgan – that could not have been more bungled. It isn't that the new actors aren't good in the roles.

No, it's that the show chose to make the switches at the height of a major storyline involving Sonny being on trial and his children playing a major role in the trial.

Specifically, it was understandable why 'GH' recast the original Michael, Dylan Cash, when the character sent into a year-long coma and had to be aged. Actor Drew Garrett not only succeeded making Michael his own creation, he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy.

What Did You Think of the Daytime Emmy Nominations?

by Allison Waldman, posted May 12th 2010 2:01PM
peter_bergman_michelle_stafford_young_and_restlessWe're you surprised when you read the Daytime Emmy nominations this morning? You're not alone.

There were some major surprises in the Daytime Emmy nominations today, starting with the fact that while 'General Hospital' garnered the most nods with 18, the two actors who had a chance to be nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor category, Maurice Benard and Anthony Geary, were shut out.

Also, the lead actress recognized, Sarah Brown, is off the show now. Still, the likelihood for 'GH' walking away with the top prize is pretty good.

ABC Gives 'One Life to Live' A Vote of Confidence

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 29th 2010 9:08AM
erika_slezak_as_viki_one_life_to_live_abcIt's been a tumultuous few months for ABC's daytime drama 'One Life to Live.' Recently, we reported that Tuc Watkins is returning, and they are bringing in a former scribe to be the associate headwriter, and the gay couple -- Kyle and Oliver -- were dumped. All that hubbub had us speculating about the future of 'One Life to Live' in an era when longtime soaps like 'Guiding Light' have been canceled and another legendary daytimer, 'As the World Turns' is ending it's run in September.

Well, fans are concerned, too, especially after the story emerged last week about ABC Daytime developing a talk show for Tori Spelling. TV Guide went to the Jori Petersen, the head ABC Daytime PR, to ask if the Spelling show might threaten the future of 'One Life.'
