Louis C.K. talks to the AV Club
by Adam Finley, posted May 24th 2007 4:18PM
Comedian and actor Louis C.K. recently spoke with the AV Club about his career, including his latest stand-up special for HBO, and his short-lived HBO sitcom, Lucky Louie, an uncensored and often uncomfortably candid series shot like a basic sitcom, but without the restrictions of network TV.
I liked Lucky Louie. I didn't think it was perfect, but those moments I didn't like (stiff dialogue, some moments felt a little too forced) are common for all new shows as they work out the kinks and improve in subsequent seasons.
Sarah Silverman gives you sex advice
by Julia Ward, posted Jan 23rd 2007 1:07PM
The Onion's A.V. Club is inviting readers to ask Sarah Silverman for sex advice. Post your question to the site, and the best questions will be forwarded to Ms. Silverman. Her answers will be included in an upcoming feature on the The Sarah Silverman Program, set for its Comedy Central debut on February 1st. Several clips from the show were recently posted online. It looks something like the non-stand-up portions of Jesus is Magic with lots of Mr. Show alums and Sarah's sister Laura in supporting roles.I personally recommend that you seek Sarah's sex advice. She and boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel were recently featured in Esquire's "What I've Learned" issue, and they had plenty of useful relationship tips to share. For instance, pretend your parents are someone else's. This makes you more tolerant of their eccentricities. That's great advice, and when you're done gleaning all the knowledge you can from Sarah, you can send a letter to Amy Sedaris care of The Believer for further enlightenment.
NYTVF: Comedy pilots
by Joel Keller, posted Sep 15th 2006 7:39PM
What I found interesting about the comedy pilots from the New York Television Festival is how slickly-done most of them were. Of the six pilots in this category -- the largest number of pilots in any category -- four looked like they could air on a network right now. And at least three of them had actors that should be recognizable to regular TV watchers. Of course, high production value doesn't necessarily translate to good comedy. But there were really fun and creative aspects in all the pilots. My reviews are after the jump, and you can watch the pilots on MSN.Which game shows do you think should come back?
by Joel Keller, posted Sep 4th 2006 1:01PM
The Onion's AV Club always does a good job of coming up with pop culture lists that have a good sense of a medium's history, not just listing things to generate controversy. For instance, they won't say that The White Stripes were better than The Beatles just to see what kind of pissed-off response they're going to get. This list from last week, about the game shows they'd love to see return to the air, is no exception. Not only do they include the old favorites like Match Game, TattleTales, and To Tell the Truth, but a couple of obscure ones, like Hot Potato, Go and Second Chance (which was a forerunner to Press Your Luck). All of the items are accomapnied by video clips from YouTube, so you can get a good feeling for each show. My favorite obscure show on the list was Whew!, where a contestant had to traverse a "gauntlet of villains" in the bonus game. It was a set-sized nightmare that was more show than game. The clip reminded me that I was transfixed by this show as an 8-year-old. But I hadn't quite gotten into baseball yet, so my taste was questionable at the time.
Anyway, which games shows do you want to be revived? Let me know in the comments.
