Golden Age of ComedyHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Hmmm, a bunch of "Best Of" sets are being released this week. I've never liked this idea (most of these sets don't have episodes that I'd like to see, and I'd like a complete collection), though I guess I can understand why they release them. They want to see if fans are interested and aren't sure if it warrants a whole season being released. Though I'm not sure why shows like Banacek and B.L. Stryker are getting "Best Of" sets since they have already had season sets released.

  • B.L. Stryker - Best Of
  • Banacek - Best Of
  • Beany & Cecil - Classic Collection, Volumes 1 and 2
  • Charles in Charge - Best Of
  • The Crow: Stairway to Heaven - Best Of
  • Curious George - Sails with Pirates and Other Curious Capers
  • Death Note - Vol. 6
  • Dirty Jobs - Collection 3

The eight greatest TV private eyes

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 28th 2007 9:29AM

Spenser: For HireWelcome to TV Squad Lists (formerly 'The Five'), a feature where each blogger has a chance to list his or her own rundown of things in television that stand out from the rest, both good and bad.

OK, so yesterday I gave my list of the Five Greatest Police Detectives, and several readers gave their lists. Today I thought I'd do the other end of the invesitgation spectrum, private eyes, amateur sleuths and other investigators. This list was even hard to do. So many great characters.

1. Spenser (Robert Urich): I picked this Boston-based private eye because he seemed to be a great mix of brain and brawn. The type of guy who could go to the ratty gym and knock around some boxer and then go off to a fancy Beacon Hill cafe and have coffee with his girlfriend and talk about politics or literature. He was smart, clever, caring, a wiseass, and ridiculously moral. What else do you want in a private eye?

Thorn Birds director dead at 77

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 30th 2006 6:59PM
Daryl DukeDaryl Duke was probably best known for directing the miniseries The Thorn Birds, which starred Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward. But he had a long career as a director and writer, going all the way back to the early 50s.

Besides that classic 80s miniseries, Duke also directed episodes of Night Gallery, Harry O, Banacek, Ghost Story, and The Bold Ones, as well as two of the later Columbo TV movies in the 90s, Murder Can Be Hazardous To Your Health and Columbo Cries Wolf. He also directed a TV movie with a great title, The President's Plane Is Missing, in the early 70s, and actually acted in a few TV shows, including Ben Casey in the early 60s.

Duke died last week in Vancouver of pulmonary fibrosis.
