President Obama Urges Congress To Get Debt Ceiling Deal Done Before Deadline, Like His Daughters Do Their Homework (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 29th 2011 5:15PM
President Obama discusses the debt ceiling on Fox NewsIn his first press conference since March, President Obama urged Congressional leaders to come together to reach a deal on the debt ceiling in advance of the looming August 2 deadline. Speaking live at an event carried by all the major networks, Obama argued that the game of political brinksmanship being played was harmful to the economy and downright irresponsible. Adding a dose of humor to the proceedings, he used his young daughters' homework habits as an example of what he'd like to see from Congress.

"That's not how responsible families act," Obama said. "Malia and Sasha generally finish their homework a day ahead of time. Malia's 13, Sasha's 10. It is impressive. They don't wait until the night before, they're not pulling all-nighters."

"You know, Congress can do the same thing," he continued. "If you know you've got to do something, just do it." Now, some might say that international economics are slightly more complicated than Algebra I, but he's got a good point anyway.

Caroline Kennedy Brings Pictures of Childhood in JFK White House to 'Late Show' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 4th 2011 4:20AM
Caroline Kennedy, 'Late Show with David Letterman'It was show-and-tell on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS) as Caroline Kennedy brought along some photographs from her time in the White House. There's a parallel to what's going on currently in the White House, as both John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama had small children with them during their presidency.

One picture showed Caroline and her little brother John dancing while Kennedy worked at his desk, while another revealed that underneath dad's desk in the Oval Office is a great place to play.

In fact, a later picture showed Obama crouched down and looking under the front of the desk while Caroline walked behind it. "He's trying to get under the desk because I told him that was a really fun place to play."

Jon Stewart Has Fun With Donald Trump's Very Bad Weekend (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted May 3rd 2011 5:20AM
'The Daily Show With Jon Stewart'During Saturday's White House Correspondents' Dinner, President Barack Obama and the event's host Seth Meyers hit Donald Trump with joke after joke, while Trump sat in the audience stony-faced.

Then, on Sunday, President Obama's surprise announcement that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by U.S. special forces preempted Trump's show, 'Celebrity Apprentice.'

On 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central) Jon Stewart tied it all together by saying he'd watched 'Celebrity Apprentice' to see if the "absolute shellacking" of Trump "had left a visible mark."

"I'm watching this 'Apprentice' episode. ... Even though the episode had been taped prior to the Correspondents' Dinner, the demolition of Trump at the Correspondents' Dinner was so thorough I thought it might actually supersede the rules of dimensional time and space and leave a mark on future episodes of 'The Apprentice'."

by Nick Zaino, posted May 2nd 2011 6:30PM
President Barack Obama on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show'Barack and Michelle Obama sat down for a taped interview with Oprah Winfrey the day President Obama released his long-form birth certificate to the press. That interview aired Monday on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' (weekdays, syndicated). Since the interview was taped before Sunday's news about the death of Osama bin Laden, much of the conversation centered on the birther issue.

When the issue first came up, President Obama said he didn't take the controversy seriously.

"When it first came up, were you thinking, 'I hope I was born here,'" asked Winfrey. Obama said no. "I was there," he said. "It seemed unlikely that my 18-year-old mother had plotted at the time, saying, you know what, he's going to be president, so let's pay off the newspapers." While the President found it amusing, Michelle Obama was less entertained.

The Daily ShowOn 'The Daily Show' (weekdays, 11 PM ET on Comedy Central), Jon Stewart played clips of media figures breathlessly using words like "stunning," "shocking" and "bombshell" to describe the release of Barack Obama's long-form birth certificate.

"I don't want to nitpick," Stewart said, in reaction to the breathlessness. "But wouldn't the bombshell have been him not being born in America? Isn't this one more of a non-shell?"

"Like, if he had come out and said, 'I have lady parts' -- like that, but this is sort of non-shell," Stewart repeated, coining a phrase that could describe a lot of things that the media breathlessly reports on these day.

Stephen Colbert Defends Mitt Romney's 'Peacetime Spending' Gaffe (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Apr 27th 2011 12:00PM
In an op-ed in the New Hampshire Union Leader this week, Mitt Romney criticized Barack Obama for his "peacetime spending binge."

Given that the country is involved in two wars (not counting our military action in Libya) some have cited Romney's use of the word "peacetime" as a rare written gaffe. Stephen Colbert, however, defended Romney from the "mitt-pickers" on 'The Colbert Report' (weekdays, 11:30 PM ET on Comedy Central)

"Congress never declared war on any of these countries, so technically Romney's right," Colbert argued. "Our soldiers are just spending a semester abroad."

Or, how about this?

Donald Trump Hits Back at Robert De Niro: 'Not the Brightest Bulb on the Planet' (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Apr 25th 2011 2:00PM
Over the weekend Robert De Niro had some harsh words for Donald Trump, comparing him to a used-car salesman for his constant questioning of Barack Obama's birthplace.

Of course, Trump jumped at the opportunity to respond to De Niro's criticism when it was brought up during a phone interview he did Monday on 'Fox & Friends' (weekdays, 6 AM ET on Fox News)

"Well, he's not the brightest bulb in the planet," Trump said of De Niro. "I have been watching him over the years and I like his acting but in terms of when I watch him doing interviews and various other things, we are not dealing with Albert Einstein."

'Daily Show' guest Tracy Morgan must have been watching in the dressing room, because when he joined Stewart onstage, Morgan had a message for The Donald. "I just want to reply to the Donald Trump thing," Morgan said. "Donald, I got [Obama's birth] certificate. It ain't in Hawaii, it's in Brooklyn. Come and get it if you want to see it."

Obama's Sister Maya Soetoro-Ng on 'Piers'Barack Obama's sister Maya Soetoro-Ng was on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (weekdays, 9PM ET on CNN), where she unsurprisingly only had nice things to say about Obama as both the President and an older brother. So Morgan tried to throw her off her script, asking whether there was something Obama could improve.

"If you were being critical, if you were giving him a halftime report," Morgan wondered. "What would you say, 'Go on, you could do better here.'"

"Well, I would say that he needs to be more cheerful when he loses to me in Scrabble," Soteoro-Ng answered.

Bill Maher Talks Obama on 'Real Time'Bill Maher hasn't been impressed with Barack Obama's negotiating skills during the budget impasse that ended Friday night with a deal between the President and the Republicans in Congress.

On 'Real Time With Bill Maher' (Friday 10 PM ET on HBO), Maher ripped Obama's strategy, saying Obama had admitted, "We met the Republicans, what they asked, and then we gave them more."

"This is like your lawyer saying to you, 'You know, I went into the chambers with the judge and the prosecutor, and my first offer was 40 years to life for you,'" Maher said of Obama's negotiating technique. "'And I think I can get your tailgating charge moved up to manslaughter. And that's my first offer."

On the "New Rules" segment of 'Real Time With Bill Maher,' (weeknights, 10PM ET on HBO) Maher made the argument that since members of prominent Republican families have come out in favor of gay marriage, it's about time that President Barack Obama should also lend his support to the cause, which he has yet to do.

"New rule: Now that a Cheney, a McCain and a Bush have come out to support gay marriage, it's your turn, Obama," Maher said, as a picture of gay marriage proponents Dick Cheney, Meghan McCain and Barbara Bush was shown in the background.

"Who are you waiting for, the state of Alabama?" Maher continued. "The Reverend Fred Phelps?"
