The Big Bang Theory: The Gothowitz Deviation

(S03E03) So we get our first episode of Leonard and Penny together, and it's... weird. She's in their apartment, making French toast, and somehow I feel nearly as uncomfortable as Sheldon when faced with the prospect of eating French toast on a Monday. It's kind of odd seeing Leonard and Penny acting all boyfriend/girlfriend-y. I've gotten so used to their casual banter, that them talking about breaking beds is kind of weirding me out.

However, what really struck me as odd about the opening scene is how mean Sheldon is to Penny. Now, obviously Sheldon would hate having his space invaded, especially by someone who doesn't understand that Mondays are for oatmeal. But the way he and Penny interacted was like early season one. Since then, between Leonard Nimoy's DNA and "Soft Kitty," they have formed somewhat of an uneasy bond. I understand that they need to have conflict at the beginning in order for the rest of the episode to make sense, but it didn't need to be so heavy-handed.

Don't you hate it when a show is so great for the first 29 minutes, but then in minute 30 it all seems to fall apart? That's what happens on this episode of The Big Bang Theory. Penny falls for a comic book guy and all of the characters show actual growth and development -- until minute 30. That's when they go for the fat joke.

The joke, which was basically just a sight gag that had Raj making out with a rotund woman in a tight pink dress, was obvious and lazy. In and of it self, it makes me roll my eyes, but doesn't really bother me. What bothers me about it is BBT is better than that. Why would a show that spends so much time humanizing and making us love a group of people who generally gets made fun of, make a thoughtless fat joke?

What I love about Big Bang Theory, is that every time you're watching it and thinking, "yes, they're geeks. Thanks Chuck Lorre, I get it," they give you a beautiful gift: this week, that gift was Klingon Boggle. Who knew that the Yiddish word for a tasty meat dumpling was so close to the Klingon word for a tasty Klingon dumpling? I think this show is making me smarter.

While I love Klingon Boggle, I'm not so in love with the main plot from this week: the war between Sheldon and Penny. Don't get me wrong; I love the idea of a war between these two. Their interaction is my favorite part of the show. What I don't like is that the premise was flawed. There was nothing that happened in this episode that was even slightly out of character for Sheldon, yet Penny was constantly surprised by his behavior. I mean, come on, Penny. You've known this guy for over a year. Are you really that shocked that he doesn't want you to touch his food?
