What to Watch Feb. 12 - 18
Before American Idol totally takes over the landscape next week when the top 24 start "singing," lots of stuff is happening on, you know, the rest of television. Jack Bauer's on for two hours tonight, while a new season of The Amazing Race revs up Sunday. Here are AOL Television's picks of the week.
24 (Mon., 8PM, Fox)
Seriously, where do 24 presidents find their awful advisors? Monster.com? In particular, the Palmer brothers need a better headhunter. In season two, David Palmer's chief of staff, Mike Novick, organized the Cabinet to use the 25th amendment and declare him unfit for office. Now, Wayne Palmer's chief of staff, Tom Lennox, and vice president, Noah Daniels, are conspiring to enact tougher security measures -- without Palmer's approval. Just goes to show, only Jack Bauer can be trusted.
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (Tue., 8PM, USA)
Maybe dogs get stressed out, just like us. They have to replace children and spouses for many owners, look good as celebrities' accessories and perform well at dog shows like Westminster. Next thing you know, we'll want them to attend college. It must be overwhelming. Consider the award-winning whippet named Bohem C'est La Vie, who escaped from her cage after Westminster last year. The police, psychics and group prayers couldn't find her. Hey, even pups need vacation time, too

The Five: The reality shows you should be watching
Reality shows are an easy target. At their worst, they combine narcissistic competitors in a state of arrested development with manipulative editing and piss poor production values. They are base, coarse, often times racist and tedious beyond belief. They bring out the worst in us - our collective desire to see other people humiliated.Fortunately, all reality shows are not the same. I mean, would Tim Gunn be involved in anything that wasn't a class act? Shows like Project Runway and, to some extent, The Amazing Race redeem an otherwise unfortunate genre littered with wife-swaps, cat fights, strangers picked to live in a house and competitive testicle eating. There is plenty of good among the bad, and in my neck of the woods, certain reality shows are as much "must see TV" as any scripted program. I'm looking for the same thing in both anyway - emotional truth.
What to Watch Wed., Jan. 17
Maui Fever (8PM, MTV)I love 'Laguna Beach.' So much so, I even love its spawn. The ditzy models of '8th and Ocean' grew on me, and I fully expect to become completely addicted to this sun and surf reality drama. The show will follow seven young Maui residents who, according to MTV, spend "their days sunning and their nights partying with no rules and no one to answer to." Can TV really get any better than that?
Beauty and the Geek rocks the Cantina
Star Wars tribute band So Long Princess is about to get a few thousand friend requests. Last night's premiere of Beauty and the Geek introduced us to Nate Dern, the Harvard student who fronts the band and took the prize in the show's first two challenges. The band has an EP out - Alderaan is Asteroids. You can check out the fun, punky tracks "Stormtrooper," "Kessel Run," "Shades of Darth" and "Pining for Mynock" at the band's MySpace page.As I pointed out in my "early look" at the show, I think Nate has a bit of leg up on the other geeks. He fronts a band, which automatically makes him a tad more extroverted than, say, Mario, the guy with 25,000 comics. My guess is that Nate cleans up pretty well, too. Not that he should let the show temper his fashion sense. Honestly, most of these geeks are pretty freaking cool dudes. (Heck, Neils is even a professional dating coach now.) They may give the state college sorority sisters the willies, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a few hipsters chicks throwing up a fan site or two. I've got dibs on www.TeamPiao.com.
What's on tonight: Knights of Prosperity, Friday Night Lights, Sugar Bowl
At 8, FOX has the Allstate Sugar Bowl. - CBS has a new King of Queens at 8.
- PBS has the premiere of Wired Science at 8, followed by a new American Masters on Annie Leibovitz.
- ABC has two new episodes of According To Jim at 8, followed by the premieres of The Knights of Prosperity and In Case of Emergency, then a new Primetime.
- NBC has new episodes of Friday Night Lights, Deal Or No Deal, and Medium.
- The CW has the two hour season premiere of Beauty and the Geek at 8.
- At 9, Court TV has a new Forensic Files.
- At 10, HBO has a new Inside The NFL.
- TV Land continues their M*A*S*H marathon.
Beauty and The Geek season three -- an early look
The casting directors have outdone themselves this time. The third season of The CW's Beauty and The Geek is set for a two-hour premiere on January 3rd, and while the formula remains the same, the players have changed. This season's geek squad is enough to make the average Boing Boing reader cream her pants. We're talking about a Linux operator, a guy who fronts a Star Wars tribute band, a hardcore Trekkie ("Trekker is the preferred term."), a gamer with a Nintendo controller tattooed to his arm and a MIT grad who's memorized Pi out some 100 decimal places because it makes him fun at parties. The beauties are, in the words of the geeks, "shiny" and "full of cleavage." They're also capable of delivering more "Where's the Panama Canal?"-type moments in a half hour period than an army of Jessica Simpson clones. Needless to say, it's going to be a great season.Beauty and the Geek is back
Beauty and The Geek will make its third season debut on January 3rd with a two-hour season premiere. As usual, eight beautiful dimwits get paired up with eight socially-awkward brainiacs for a series of competitions that put their respective skill sets to the test.I'm not a big fan of reality shows, but I swear I teared up a little when one of the beauties admitted in season one that she wouldn't have given any of the geeks she'd grown to love the time of day before the show. It touched the cockles of my own geeky heart. And, as Woody Allen says, "There's nothing like hot cockles." I'm still waiting for the bizarro version of this show where eight himbos are paired up with eight girl geeks. I have no idea if it would work quite as well since we all know that the girl geek just needs to take off her glasses and loosen her hair from that tight librarian bun and - swoosh - she's do-able.
