Bo Burnham Gets MTV Show, Is He YouTube's Newest Legitimate Star?

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 7th 2010 7:00PM
Bo BurnhamCould Bo Burnham's rise from YouTube celebrity to pseudo-fame be as lucrative as Justin Bieber's one day? Or is he destined to go the way of Tay Zonday?

The 20-year-old comedian, who has become a rising star in the comedy world after his offensive yet delightfully self-deprecating songs garnered major YouTube attention, landed a four-record deal with Comedy Central at age 17, a writing deal with Judd Apatow at 18, and the Panel Prize at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at 20. He's also got a Comedy Central special called 'Words, Words, Words' airing Oct. 16, not to mention that episode of 'Comedy Central Presents' he filmed last year.

Now, he's landed a put pilot deal with MTV for an as-yet-untitled new series about "a kid fresh out of high school who's pursing the new American dream of being a celebrity without having any talent," Burnham told Variety.

Yo Teach ... ! could be the show that saves NBC

by Bob Sassone, posted Jun 1st 2009 1:33PM
One of the most eagerly awaited new NBC fall shows is Yo Teach ... ! Well, no. Actually, the show doesn't really exist. This is a promo for the new Judd Apatow movie Funny People. But you can imagine this show existing on television, maybe on Friday nights on ABC sometime in the mid-90s, right before Boy Meets World.

Here's the web site for the show, which has more video and looks a lot like the site for a real show. That's Bo Burnham as the student.

Comedy Central signs YouTube teen - VIDEOS

by Bob Sassone, posted May 29th 2008 3:23PM

Bo BurnhamWe've all seen the thousands of comedy videos that people upload to YouTube. Some of them are good, most of them are awful, and there are very few that you would describe as "brilliant." This guy is the latter.

They're from 17 year-old Bo Burnham, a Massachusetts teen who started uploading wacky songs a while back and became a viral video sensation. How much of a sensation? Hollywood agent Douglas Edley (who also reps Dave Chappelle and Drew Carey) saw the videos and called up Burnham. He's now his agent, and Burnham was signed to Comedy Central. He recently recorded an album for them and has filmed some comedy segments for the channel.

After the jump are a couple of samples of Burnham's work (check out more at the link above, especially "Cookout"). Warning: these are NSFW, or school, church, or ice cream social for that matter. But they are undeniably funny and very clever, and Burnham has the musical chops to back up the words.
