'Boardwalk Empire' Gangster Index, Season Two Finale: Jimmy Gets Christopher'd

by Alex Moaba, posted Dec 12th 2011 4:00PM
Atlantic City's tangled web of betrayal, political scheming and murder came full circle in 'Boardwalk Empire's' shocking Season Two finale. After a season of trying to take down Nucky Thompson, Jimmy Darmody finally realized how foolish he'd been to move against his former mentor, but it was too late. Even after Darmody helped make his election fraud charges disappear, Nucky repaid him with two shots to the head, an abrupt end of the line for one of the show's most compelling characters.

To keep track of the deals, deception and death, AOL TV presents the final Season Two installment of our 'Boardwalk Empire' gangster index, a guide to who's up and who's down among HBO's organized criminals.

'Boardwalk Empire' Finale: Nucky's Showdown With Jimmy (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 12th 2011 5:00AM
'Boardwalk Empire' season finaleIt was a showdown two seasons in the making, and finally in this week's season finale, it was Nucky versus Jimmy on 'Boardwalk Empire' (Sun., 9PM ET on HBO). After all the damage and ruckus Jimmy has caused Nucky over the past season, it was inevitable that it would come down to the two of them.

Jimmy was once Nucky's right-hand man. He was the heir apparent to Nucky's bootlegging throne in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, but it just wasn't enough for Jimmy. Unfortunately, his ambition was more than his intellect could handle, and he found himself in over his head.

'Boardwalk Empire' Gangster Index, Week 11: Oedipus, Meet Heroin

by Alex Moaba, posted Dec 5th 2011 5:30PM
Jimmy Darmody's wife paid the ultimate price for her husband's rookie mistakes on last week's 'Boardwalk Empire.' In 'Under God's Power She Flourishes,' Atlantic City's chief bootlegger and crime boss dealt with his wife's death by numbing himself on Luciano's heroin, and in the midst of his drugged-out flashbacks, we learned a whole lot about his bizarre relationship with his mother. When the Oedipal drama finally played out, it left the Commodore dead in his tracks.

The past also refused to stay buried for Nucky Thompson and Nelson Van Alden, as their own murderous secrets from Season One re-surfaced and threatened to put them both behind bars. Maybe they can be cell-mates.

To keep track of the deals, deception and death, AOL TV is continuing our 'Boardwalk Empire' gangster index, a guide to who's up and who's down among HBO's organized criminals.

Caught in the Proverbial Crossfire on 'Boardwalk Empire' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 5th 2011 6:00AM
'Boardwalk Empire'It was a week of disturbing revelations and grisly confrontations on 'Boardwalk Empire' (Sun., 9PM ET on HBO) for Jimmy. It would seem that Gillian has been messing with her boy for longer than we realized, and more intimately than we want to even think about.

When she coolly and coldly talked about how Jimmy and Angela's son Tommy likely won't even remember his mother now that she's dead, that was all Jimmy could take. After a lifetime of manipulation, he finally snapped and went in for the kill.

'SNL' Scorecard: Steve Buscemi is Not a Pervert and the Return of 'Sex' Ed Vincent

by Mike Ryan, posted Dec 4th 2011 11:50AM

Oh, glory be, after more than 13 months, "Sex" Ed Vincent has returned to 'Saturday Night Live.' Funny, back in October of 2010, if I would have had a sneak peak at the upcoming hosts for the next year, yeah, my initial reaction would have been, "Yep, 'Sex' Ed will return during the Buscemi show." Speaking of Buscemi, honestly, I can't remember a thing about the last time he hosted in 1998 (and I watch a lot of 'SNL') – that will not be the case this time around. Buscemi's show was such a solid engagement... that is until, for the second show in a row, an eccentric Kristin Wiig character brought the show to a screeching halt. On to the scorecard!

'Boardwalk Empire' Gangster Index, Week 10: Jimmy Pays His Debts

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 28th 2011 12:00PM
Jimmy Darmody may possess the keys to Atlantic City, but in 'Georgia Peaches,' he found out the hard way that Nucky Thompson's old job isn't so easy after all. With his latest shipment of whiskey collecting dust in a distillery after Nucky flooded the town with Irish stock, Jimmy's partners and creditors rapidly lost patience with 'Boardwalk''s prodigal son, and his wife Angela payed a dire price for his hubris.

Nucky Tries to Secure a Business Partner in Ireland on 'Boardwalk Empire' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 21st 2011 4:00AM
'Boardwalk Empire' - 'Battle of the Century'Nucky headed to Ireland to try and set up a trade line of guns for Irish whiskey on 'Boardwalk Empire' (Sun., 9PM ET on HBO). What he walked into was akin to a civil war within the Irish rebellion against Britain. The man he went to meet, who was the leader of The Cause, lost a son in the battle and so had lost his will to support further bloodshed.

This put a serious crimp in Nucky's plans as the demand for firearms would cease along with a cease fire. But just as things felt hopeless, after the leader put Nucky in a car back to the port with one of his men, gunshots erupted behind them.

'Boardwalk Empire' Gangster Index, Week 8: Nucky's Playing Chess, Not Checkers

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 14th 2011 6:00PM
After losing his closest allies and surviving both a political coup and an honest-to-god assassination attempt, Nucky Thompson finally walked away from his post as Atlantic City's Treasurer in 'Two Boats and a Lifeguard.' But don't count him out yet: the resignation was merely a chess move, made so he can live and scheme another day. Darmody & co. may be rejoicing at their new opportunity to dominate Atlantic City's liquor trade, but you can bet they haven't seen the last of Nucky.

Did Nucky Thompson Just Admit Defeat on 'Boardwalk Empire'? (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 14th 2011 4:00AM
'Boardwalk Empire' - 'Two Boats and a Lifeguard'It was the day Jimmy and the Commodore had been waiting for on 'Boardwalk Empire' (Sun., 9PM ET on HBO). A seemingly beaten and humbled Nucky Thompson walked into their presence and announced that he was done. Losing his father and nearly his own life has made him realize that he doesn't need all the chaos that goes with Atlantic City.

So he resigned his post as Treasurer and is looking to retire. The smile on Jimmy's face was probably enough to make Nucky grit his teeth, but he was playing the long game. Of course Nucky isn't going to ride off into the sunset. He's just reevaluating existing strategies and making new moves.

'Boardwalk Empire' Gangster Index, Week 7: Give Nucky Thompson a Hand

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 7th 2011 5:20PM
The conspirators trying to make a move on Nucky Thompson had spent countless hours, and nearly half this season of 'Boardwalk Empire' meticulously plotting their political coup. But in 'Peg of Old,' they lost their patience to see it through, and hastily moved on to assassination.

But luck smiled down on Nuck, and the assassin's bullet went right through his hand, missing his vitals. Even so, this thing just got real. We'll have to wait to see if Nucky will exact revenge on his rivals, but for now let's catalogue the damage done in this installment.

Someone Tries to Kill Nucky on 'Boardwalk Empire' (VIDEO)

by Laura Prudom, posted Nov 7th 2011 3:40AM
Steve BuscemiIt seems as though Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) has more friends than enemies lately on 'Boardwalk Empire' (Sun., 9PM ET on HBO). Even in a crowded room, in front of hundreds of witnesses, people are still trying to kill him.

After a cryptic confrontation with Jimmy, in which Jimmy said, "It doesn't make a difference if you're right or wrong, just make a decision," Nucky was attacked by an unknown shooter who caught him with a bullet in the hand before he was taken out by a federal agent.

We're all for keeping your friends close and your enemies closer, but in this case, perhaps Nucky would be better keeping some distance from everyone for a while.

Q&A: Whatever You Do, Don't Offer 'Boardwalk Empire' Star Michael Shannon a Shot of Whiskey

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 31st 2011 12:20PM
Michael Shannon's intense portrayal of the frightening, puritanical Prohibition agent Nelson Van Alden on 'Boardwalk Empire' reached a dramatic apex in Sunday night's 'Age of Reason' episode. Thrust into a state of anguish and guilt over an agent he thinks has been burned to pay for his sins, Van Alden watches his web of lies unravel as his wife discovers the twisted game of house he's been playing with Lucy.

We talked to Michael Shannon about the difficulty of playing such a deathly serious character and discussed whether the jig is up for Van Alden in Atlantic City. Shannon revealed that his biggest challenge as Val Alden wasn't whipping himself or drowning Agent Sebso but downing a shot of whiskey. The Academy Award-nominated actor also divulged his personal beverage of choice (yes, it contains alcohol) and shared the key to ID'ing Van Alden as the father of Lucy's baby. Read on for the full interview!

An Ambush of a Liquor Shipment Turns Into Opportunity on 'Boardwalk Empire' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 31st 2011 4:00AM
'Boardwalk Empire' - 'The Age of Reason'It looks like Jimmy is ready to make his move on 'Boardwalk Empire' (Sun., 9PM ET on HBO). Nucky is distracted and Jimmy is motivated. So when he finds out the shipment they stopped by Waxy's boys, Lucky and Lansky, is part of Nucky's trade, he manages to resist the urge to get into a bloody shootout.

As he tells his own cohorts, sometimes you have to bite your lip and not kill everyone who's done you wrong. Sometimes it's better for business to let them keep living and try to make a deal to take the liquor trade away from both Nucky and Arnold Rothstein.

So completely against his initial thoughts, Jimmy decides to let this shipment go through. After all, he'd found something potentially far more valuable than liquor. He'd found potential allies in his campaign to take down Nucky Thompson.

'Boardwalk Empire' Gangster Index, Week 5: Police Chief Turns Police Chump & Heads Roll

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 24th 2011 1:35PM
On 'Boardwalk Empire,' the dominoes have started to fall in the aftermath of the Commodore's stroke. Having blindly followed the old man over the precipice, his co-conspirators are squirming and getting desperate now that he's incapacitated. In this week's 'Gimcrack and Bunkum,' they scrambled to save their hides, and the desperation manifested itself in the form of two brutal, head-mutilating murders.

Meanwhile, Jimmy continued to prove that he may be the only one with the smarts and toughness to make it on his own, while the women of 'Boardwalk' showed they can be just as violent and conniving as the men.

Eli's Attempt to Reconcile With Nucky Ends Up in a Fistfight on 'Boardwalk Empire' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 24th 2011 4:30AM
'Boardwalk Empire' - 'Gimcrack & Bunkum'Who said anything about brotherly love superceding all. Loyalty is the stock Nucky trades in on 'Boardwalk Empire' (Sun., 9PM ET on HBO), and once you prove you're all out of it, he's got no further use for you. Even if you're a blood relative.

When Eli came to his brother, sobbing and apologizing and trying to make things right, Nucky told him in no uncertain terms where he stands now. He then proceeded to prove that even though he usually has other people get their hands dirty on his behalf, he's not above getting into the fray.
