Top 20: TV's Best BFFs

by Kim Potts, posted Jul 26th 2010 3:30PM

The 'Entourage' pals are back with their seventh season, and the 'My Boys' friends kicked off season 4 recently, which got us to thinking about our other favorite TV friendships.

Whether it's the duo who inspired 'Guy Love' and the other guy pair who would be quick to point out that there's nothing wrong with that or the Milwaukee ladies who schlemiel-ed and schlimazel-ed their way to making their dreams come true and the Miami foursome who proved friendship (and feistiness) is even more important in your 'Golden' years, these are the 20 TV BFFs we'd be happy to call friends.

Big Shot TV Producers Aren't Straying From Familiar Territory, And Why Not?

by Danny Gallagher, posted Feb 8th 2010 7:00PM
If you're one of the fortunate few who make it big in the television biz, shouldn't you take the opportunity to use that cushy cushion you have built for yourself and take a big risk on something exciting and new? Not if you're one of these big television producers.

Big shots like Shawn Ryan, David E. Kelley, and Shonda Rhimes all have pilots in the can that don't seem to stray much farther from the shows that made them the big shots that they are today.

For instance, Ryan, creator of the groundbreaking FX cop drama 'The Shield,' has another cop drama premiering with Fox called 'Ridealong.' Kelley, the writer/producer behind 'The Practice' and 'Boston Legal,' has created a reality drama for NBC called 'Kindred.' Even Rhimes, the woman behind ABC's 'Grey's Anatomy,' has another medical drama show for ABC called 'Off the Map.' Is ABC looking to create an all-medical soap opera cable channel in the coming year?

Laugh-In's Henry Gibson dead at 73

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 17th 2009 2:00AM
Henry GibsonFor some reason I thought that Henry Gibson was a lot older than 73, but the character actor with the huge resume passed away from cancer at that age yesterday in Malibu.

One of the more famous TV credits on that resume was Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, the influential 60s comedy show that no one under 30 has ever seen. He also appeared in shows like Bewitched, The Beverly Hillbillies, Deep Space Nine, Coach, MacGyver, Evening Shade, Sisters, Newhart, Magnum, P.I., and Simon and Simon.

More recently, TV fans know him from his many appearances as a judge on Boston Legal and his voice work on King of the Hill (he played Bob Jenkins). He was also in several movies, including Magnolia (he played Thurston Howell???), The Nutty Professor, Nashville, The Blues Brothers, Wedding Crashers, and a ton of others.

New TV on DVD releases this week

by Bob Sassone, posted May 4th 2009 6:00PM
October RoadHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

If you blinked last year, you probably missed NBC's Crusoe. It's now on DVD, and it's one of those "season one" sets that also serves as a "complete series" sets.

If you're an October Road fan, the season two set contains a 10 minute bonus episode that acts as the series-ender. It would be great if more shows did that when they're canceled.

  • The Adventures of Black Beauty - Series 1
  • Bleak House - Special Edition and Blu-ray
  • Boston Legal - Season 5
  • Crusoe - Complete Series
  • Dexter - Season 2 (Blu-ray)
  • Doctor Who - E-Space Trilogy and Battlefield
  • Earth: Final Conflict - Season 1

Has Melissa George finally landed a good role?

by Jane Boursaw, posted Mar 2nd 2009 8:29AM
Melissa George in US AttorneyI've been a fan of Melissa George since I first saw her in 2001's short-lived Thieves. I was, quite possibly, the only person in the known universe who actually loved that show. She starred with John Stamos as lovers and professional thieves who worked a deal with the FBI. I guess I have a soft spot for anything that even resembles the 1960s show T.H.E. Cat, though there will never be anyone like Robert Loggia.

Melissa George has held assorted roles since then, including Lauren Reed in Alias, Laura in In Treatment, and Dr. Sadie Harris in Grey's Anatomy. These were great, but I don't think she's really found her place in TV history yet. But maybe that will change soon, because she's just nabbed the female lead in the CBS drama pilot US Attorney.

Kristen Chenoweth is now Legally Mad - VIDEO

by Allison Waldman, posted Dec 19th 2008 12:35PM
kristin chenowethShe's been Glinda, the Good Witch (Wicked) and Olive Snook, the itty-bitty, lovable waitress (Pushing Daisies), comic strip cutie Sally Brown (You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown), a PR pro on The West Wing, and now she's going to be Skippy Pylon. Skippy the lawyer, and she's heading to the courtroom.

Kristin Chenoweth will star in Legally Mad, a new drama series for creator David E. Kelly for NBC. This is by far the smartest, best news out of NBC in months. (Could Jeff Zucker be reading TV Squad? Have we gotten under his skin?)

You can't see me but I'm doing the dance of joy and happiness about this casting. I have been in the dumps over Pushing Daisies not being picked up by ABC. The network hasn't even said whether it will air the last episodes, and Kristin Chenoweth has been the one star out there who's really expressed her disappointment that the show has come to an end. Therefore, I'm extremely glad for her that ABC's loss will be NBC's gain.

Boston Legal saves its silliest for the finale

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 9th 2008 1:02PM
Boston Legal finaleLet's face it; Boston Legal has always been a silly show. A show that dealt with serious issues and spun out some seriously stern sermons on the status of the human condition in 21st century America, but always in front of a backdrop of chaos at Crane, Poole and Schmidt.

From cases that even Don Quixote would think were lost causes to the inappropriate behavior of Alan Shore, Denny Crane, and others, to the not-so-subtle references that these lawyers know they're on a TV show, Boston Legal was always was one moment away from drowning in its own silliness.

But last night's series finale descended into more silliness than I think even the show's most ardent fans could handle. There were sincere moments, but most of them barely had time to breathe and linger on people's consciousness before we got even more silliness.

Leno loves to sign autographs (but Shatner doesn't)

by Bob Sassone, posted Dec 8th 2008 5:05PM
LenoQuestion: if you were famous - not just well-known to a small but loyal fan following, I'm talking real mainstream fame - would you sign a bunch of autographs? Let's say you worked every day filming and at the end of the day you just wanted to go home or go out to dinner but you were ambushed by 50 people who all wanted their photo/book/stomachs signed. Would you stop and do it? I think I'd be a good signer. I wouldn't go crazy. There would be a normal limit to what I would stand there and sign, but I'd be nice to fans.

I was thinking about that after reading this story about the best and worst celebrity signers. It's ranked by Autograph magazine, and they say that the best celebrity autographer is Jay Leno.

David E. Kelley pitching - surprise! - a new legal show

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 8th 2008 11:03AM
David E. KelleyIt's looking like David E. Kelley's plan is to have at least one of his legal shows on the air at all times.

The producer/writer is now pitching a new legal drama series to the networks. CBS and NBC are particularly interested. No word on whether or not ABC is interested in the new show, which would be odd since they've had some success with one of Kelley's other legal shows, Boston Legal, which is ending after this season.

To refresh your memory, here are the other legal shows that Kelley has created, written, and/or produced over the years: Ally McBeal, The Practice, The Law Firm, Girls Club, and L.A. Law. Actually, even some of his non-law shows have had strong law elements, including Picket Fences.

Kelley was working on the American version of Life On Mars, which premieres on ABC later this month, but left after the pilot. The show is getting good buzz so far.
