The End of a Contestant on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)
by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 9th 2010 3:35AM
Sigh. There's nothing worse than seeing a contestant being kicked off a show for reasons that are beyond his control. But that's what happened tonight on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thu., 9PM ET on Fox).[Spoiler alert.]
Dancer Alex Wong was eliminated from the show -- and it wasn't his fault. On the previous episode, we learned that Alex suffered a foot injury, but no one was really sure how bad it was. Based on the injury, he was automatically placed in the "Bottom Three" on the show, and was instantly in danger of being kicked off.
Alex was a great dancer, and none of the judges wanted to remove him. But tonight, we learned that he suffered a lacerated Achilles tendon -- and as a result, he wouldn't able to dance for at least another three months.
Upon hearing the news, all the other contestants looked horrified. The judges were upset. Alex cried. But the guy couldn't really dance anymore, so there was nothing that anyone could do. Still, it was all extremely sad.
A Contestant Is Injured on 'So You Think You Can Dance' -- Will He Survive? (VIDEO)

We've got a man down on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox).[Spoiler alert.]
Top-rated dancer Alex Wong suffered a foot injury during the rehearsals for tonight's episode, and was unable to perform. He ruptured his Achilles tendon, and may not be able to continue on the show. The judges expressed regret, but instantly placed Alex in the dreaded "Bottom Three" -- meaning that he could be voted off at any time. And even if Alex isn't eliminated by the viewers, if he doesn't recover from his injury by next week, then he'll be automatically kicked off the program.
Okay, so: two questions. Is it fair to punish Alex for not being able to dance? And do you think he'll be able to recover? He was doing so well up until now.
Another Contestant Is Kicked Off of 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

We had a very appropriate (but unintentional) metaphor tonight on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thu., 9PM ET on Fox). During this episode, the Cirque du Soleil dance troupe showed up. And they performed a version of the Elvis song 'Return to Sender.' But their act featured only a few girls -- who were lost in a sea of men. It's hard to think of a better metaphor for the show right now, as the guy/girl ratio is becoming seriously skewed. As of tonight, we had six men and only three women. And by the end of the show ... there would be one less dancer.

Why do we watch 'So You Think You Can Dance'? For the dancing? For the technical artistry? Yes, of course, we watch it for those reasons. But then, there are some potential side-benefits as well. And so we present you with these three simple words: Female ... Wardrobe ... Malfunction.[Spoiler alert.]

The Bad, the Weird and the Awkward on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (VIDEO)

Well, it's audition time again on 'So You Think You Can Dance' (Thu., 8PM ET on Fox). Which means that -- for good or for ill -- we are once again subjected to the worst that the dance world can offer. While many great dancers appear on the show, we'd like to take a second to focus on the not so good ones.Terrible auditions ranged from a guy who unwisely shook his butt while dressed in an 80s outfit ... to a guy who wore pieces of broccoli over his nipples (seriously). But perhaps the worst tryout was reserved for 19-year-old Daria Kopylova. She creepily did a highly sexy dance routine ... with her own father. It was such an awkward performance that finally -- mercifully -- the judges forced her to stop.
'So You Think You Can Dance' Promises 'Risky' Live Performance Show

As if 'So You Think You Can Dance' hasn't switched things up completely this season with the return of judge Mia Michaels and the addition of 10 All Star dancers, the performances are now going to be live, host Cat Deeley told TV Squad at yesterday's season 7 junket."We're going to be live all the time," Deeley explained. "So whereas before we've done a pre-recorded performance show, and then a live results show, this year we're doing both live, which I think is brilliant. Me, I love doing live because it gets your adrenaline going. If something big happens, there's no way we can stop it. It's going to be that real water cooler version of, 'Oh my God, did you see what happened last night on "So You Think You Can Dance?''' Whatever happens, happens, so you've just got to watch."
At 'So You Think You Dance' Auditions, Cat Deeley Reveals Surprise Projects

It may only be April, but 'So You Think You Can Dance' is already warming up for its seventh season. The dance competition show, which aired its first-ever fall season in 2009, doesn't premiere until May 27 (8PM ET on Fox). But nationwide auditions just wrapped up after producers and judges spent weeks culling talent from New York to Los Angeles, and multiple cities in between.'SYTYCD' made its final stop in L.A. last weekend, attracting a crowd of hopefuls that stretched almost completely around a city block before the doors even opened. Amidst throngs of dancers and a gaggle of cameramen, co-executive producer Jeff Thacker was fired up for the day, despite having completed three US editions of the show in 18 months.
Review: So You Think You Can Dance - Top 6 Perform

(S06E23) For the first time in the history of So You Think You Can Dance, we have six dancers in the final performance show, which makes it even more unpredictable. It was a great night of dancing, but I'm not even going to venture a guess as to who might win, as a strong case could be made for at least five of them.
I would have liked to see tonight's episode be a two-hour showcase rather than tomorrow's finale. We could then have seen each of the dancers perform in solos, or perhaps some of the more diverse couplings and group numbers we've gotten on other finales.
Instead, we got nine dances, pairing each guy with each girl through the night. It was wall-to-wall dancing to pack it into an hour, which was a refreshing change, and we did get to see married couple Ryan and Ashleigh perform together ... and not in a ballroom routine.
Review: So You Think You Can Dance - 2 of 8 voted off

(S06E22) We had a pretty straightforward elimination episode of So You Think You Can Dance: two musical guests, random pimping from K-Mart, a short interview from DJ Samantha Ronson, and solos. Cat was looking stunning in her dress and spoon-like earrings. She reminds us that there were a ground breaking eight million votes.Group Performance - Jazz (Sonya Tayeh) - I have a feeling that the women's section would have been hindered by Ashleigh's lack of contemporary skills if she was around. Russell disappeared for one sequence where he clearly would have been dancing with Ashleigh. I have a feeling that the performance had a lot less running off stage if there was a full top eight.

(S06E21) This season of So You Think You Can Dance will be ending with a final six instead of a final four. I'm convinced someone messed up the schedule and they were supposed to double eliminate a couple, probably back in the Top 20. Noelle's injury didn't help the situation, and they decided to just go with a final six.We welcome the top seven contestants because Ashleigh popped out her shoulder in rehearsals and has to have an MRI scan. She won't be dancing, but she's in tears because another crippling injury may end her dancing dreams. Sadly, she would have done an amazing job with both Hip-Hop and Bollywood.

(S06E20) I go into these elimination shows expecting a lot of pad and filler. But when it's a dance show, I want to see dancing; which is why I'm always a little perplexed when musical guests who don't dance show up. This week's musical guest was Snoop Dogg, and I really enjoyed it. And yes, I know that Snoop does little more than bounce and swagger.
It was that either he or the producers were smart about how to put together his stage show. Hip-hop videos are known for dancing, so why not bring that dancing to the live show? Joining Snoop on stage was Quest, a former winner of America's Best Dance Crew, as well as the dance home for three former SYTYCD contestants: Ryan, Dominic and Hok.
What about the results, though? I was surprised that even though we've switched to voting for individual dancers, it was still two couples from last night's performance show that wound up in the bottom.
