It's a new cop show, hurray! 'The Good Guys' (Wed., 8PM ET on Fox) stars Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford as a pair of mismatched policemen (of course).

Welcome to the month of May, which songs and poems tells us is primarily responsible for bringing forth darling buds and spring flowers.

Not a single epigram or aphorism mentions May Sweeps, when May pulls the curtain on the TV season that was, bringing many good things -- and plenty of crap things -- to an end.

Over the next 30 days or so, over 60 shows will say goodbye and leave the airwaves for an extended summer vacation, while others are saying a permanent goodbye. Once they go, TV will leave us with nothing but a smattering of viewing options. Faced with such a dearth -- especially once the hockey post-season is over -- my upstairs neighbors usually cancel their satellite subscription for the summer. Ay yai yai! This is crazy talk! I happen to share that satellite subscription with them and I now have to convince them that it's worth continuing to split the bill for the delight of a few summer series.

But look at what I have to work with:

Spring is still more than a week away, but the ever-industrious programming gurus at FOX have just released its summer schedule and, according to the Hollywood Reporter, it boasts several familiar faces and one new contender.

Mondays, beginning June 7, will welcome the Tim Roth pyschic-cop drama 'Lie to Me' -- which has been on hiatus since December -- back to the lineup. The cult hit will be followed at 9PM by a new offering called 'Good Guys' (formerly 'Code 58'), a comedic drama starring Bradley Whitford ('West Wing') as a washed-up detective and Colin Hanks (Tom's kid) as a gung-ho young buck. The pilot, which delves into the wacky situations the new partners will face, will air before 'American Idol' on May 19 and then debut in its dedicated time slot three weeks later.

Calling all cars: Fox has announced that its new Bradley Whitford-Colin Hanks police action comedy, tentatively titled 'Code 58', is set to premiere on Mon., June 7 at 9PM.

Previously called 'Jack and Dan,' the new cop series from Matt Nix (who also created USA Network's hit 'Burn Notice'), will also get two special previews right before the 'American Idol' results show on Wed., May 12 and May 19 at 8PM, before settling into its Monday night slot.

Here's a little ditty about Jack and Dan, two American cops doing the best that they can. Apologies to John Mellencamp, but 'Jack and Dan,' a new action comedy from Fox, has found its leads: Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hanks, who is the son of beloved Hollywood icon Tom Hanks, will play Jack, a straight-laced detective in the Los Angeles Police Department whose ambitions have been thwarted by his own mistakes. Whitford will play his new partner Dan, a loose cannon whose drinking and womanizing are only tolerated because of an act of heroism earlier in his career.

I have a 12-pack of Heineken in my fridge right now. I don't drink it, but my roommate does. So it's fun to see the Sterling Cooper gang going after the beer company.

But can I say that I don't get Betty's reaction at the party when it came to the beer? Sure, this is just one more thing that she feels Don "deceives" her about, but I don't think he was doing anything particularly bad to her. What is nasty are the boldfaced lies that he tells her when she confronts him about his affair with Bobbie. Though I wonder, what else can he do? I know, I know, tell the truth. But given what the truth is, he probably feels that he has to lie or he's going to be that guy in the credits, falling from the sky as his world collapses beneath him.

This episode brought a big smile to my face for one reason: Pete was wining and dining the Gorton's people! I grew up a few blocks away from the Gorton's headquarters, so it was great to see them as the latest client of Sterling Cooper. Hopefully we'll see them in the future too as we've repeatedly seen Belle Jolie, Utz, and Mohawk Airlines.

The rest of the episode shows how intricate this show is. It sort of worries me in a way. How can people who didn't see the first season get into this show, the characters, the rhythms, the seven different stories that each character is carrying around with them? How does the show grow in viewership? I don't know. I just know I love it and other dedicated fans do too, and I hope that's enough for many years to come.
