After a String of Gems, AMC's First Truly Terrible Drama Is...
by Maureen Ryan, posted Nov 4th 2011 11:30AM
It was bound to happen sooner or later: AMC has a dud on its hands. The network's track record thus far has been enviable, but 'Hell on Wheels' (10PM Sunday, AMC) is disappointing on any number of levels. I certainly wasn't a fan of how 'The Killing' ended its debut season, but at least that show started out strong, and the rest of the network's programs offer compelling characters, distinctive aesthetics or solid takes on conventional premises. In some cases, AMC's dramas excel in all of those arenas and many more.
'Hell on Wheels' does one thing well: It's good at being tedious.
There is a truly compelling performance in the early going, but that doesn't come from star Anson Mount, who is glumly competent at best.
Colm Meaney Joins the Cast of 'Hell on Wheels'
by Catherine Lawson, posted Aug 4th 2010 7:45AM
For many he'll always be Chief O'Brien, but Colm Meaney's moved on. According to deadline.com he's signed up to star opposite Anson Mount in AMC's new period drama, 'Hell on Wheels.'The Dublin-born actor -- who was most recently seen in 'Get Him to the Greek' -- will play Thomas "Doc" Durant, a businessman determined to make his fortune building the transcontinental railroad. The character's described as being "a man of vision and a self-serving opportunist who is capable of 'creative financing.'"
Meaney joins previously cast Mount, fellow Irish thesp Dominique McElligott and rapper-actor Common.
David Kelley may bail on Life on Mars
by Allison Waldman, posted May 7th 2008 9:25AM
I don't know if this is good news or bad... David E. Kelley may be checking out of Life on Mars, the ABC pilot based on the hit BBC crime/time travel drama. According to Variety, the prolific Mr. Kelley -- Boston Legal, L.A. Law, Picket Fences, Ally MacBeal, The Practice, Chicago Hope, etc. -- is unhappy with the financial arrangements and if things aren't worked out, he's going to move on.Life on Mars was a terrific show. The UK version has played on BBC America, starring John Simm and Philip Glenister. Following the British model, the series lasted just two years -- 16 episodes total. In the ABC pilot, which Thomas Schlamme directed, Jason O'Mara (Men in Trees) is playing Simm's role, Sam; Colm Meaney (Star Trek: The Next Generation) is Gene. Kelley wrote the American variation on the story of Sam Tyler, a police detective in present day who awakens from a car crash to find he's living in 1973. Has he really gone back in time or is it all in his head?
Untraditional autumn set for ABC
by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 12th 2008 11:01AM
Autumn may not look the same way it usually does on ABC in 2008. The network is seriously considering opening the new season sans new drama series. There will still be returning shows, including the dramas from 2007 which have been deemed successes by the ABC brass, including Pushing Daisies, Private Practice and Dirty Sexy Money -- but no new pilots.Men in Trees: The Indecent Proposal

(S01E17) After feeling like we've been treading water over the last few episodes, this one really felt like the show started moving forward again. Jack and Lynn are getting married, Mai and Sylvia are planning a wedding, Sarah is moving on with her career, Annie and Patrick are meeting her parents, and Marin is having boy troubles of a different kind. I have to admit that I was getting a little tired of this show after last week but this episode was invigorating.
