'Arrested Development' Movie in 2011? Alex Kingston Joins 'Private Practice' and More TV News

by Chris Harnick, posted Feb 4th 2011 5:45PM
Arrested DevelopmentCould the mythical 'Arrested Development' movie get off the ground and make it to a theater near you this year? That's what creator Mitch Hurwitz seems to think.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Hurwitz said the movie plans are in motion.

"We've started that process and it is our sincere hope to shoot it this year and get it out this year," Hurwitz said. "That's what we're hoping, but a lot of things have to fall into place for that to happen."

That's what we've been hoping for years, Mitch. For now, let's just file this as another chapter in the ongoing saga of a movie that will probably never get made.

In other TV news ...

NBC has ordered two more pilots, a remake of 'Prime Suspect' and a Civil Warera drama. 'Prime Suspect' is a remake of the iconic British police drama starring Helen Mirren. NBC's version has Peter Berg attached as executive producer. 'The Crossing' follows a soldier who travels across country until he settles into a town and is welcomed as its savior. [Entertainment Weekly]

'Desperate Housewives' to end in 2013? That's creator Marc Cherry's plan. Cherry said the stars of the show are in negotiations and if all goes well, he anticipates ABC giving the series a two-season renewal with a 2013 finale. [TV Guide]

Alex Kingston is heading to 'Private Practice.' The 'Doctor Who' and 'ER' star will play Marla, a shrink, for multiple episodes. [TVLine]

Lauren Conrad's return to MTV isn't happening. The 'Hills' star was planning a new reality series following her life as she gets her fashion business off the ground, but Conrad told EW that MTV felt it was "too highbrow." Yep, TOO HIGHBROW. [EW]

'Cougar Town' Moment: Jules Gets Grayson to Cry

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 3rd 2011 8:30AM
As 'Cougar Town' leaves the schedule for two months to make way for 'Mr. Sunshine,' fans got an episode that was typical of what we've seen during its second season: some small story arcs were tied up, but it was mostly just the usual vignettes of a day or two in the life of the Cul-de-sac Crew. It just happens to be around Valentine's Day.

Ellie, for instance, says she hates Valentine's Day, but she always loves it when the showman in Andy comes out. Kirsten wants a sexy photo of Travis, and he reluctantly obliges, somehow managing to involve both his parents in the photography session.

But the main "plot" of this episode is Jules' attempt to try to get Grayson to open up. It's a scene that we likely wouldn't have bought if it came a year ago, but now that we've spent a year and a half with this group, it now feels completely natural.

Ian Gomez, Cougar TownOne of our favorite characters on 'Cougar Town' is Andy Torres. (Well, tied with Laurie. And Bobby. Oh, and Barb.) In any case, if you're like us and can't get enough of him, head over to watch ABC.com's 'Andy's Dream' webisodes, which focus on what goes on inside Andy's head during his midday siestas.

Ian Gomez stars in the series, with Brian Van Holt and Dan Byrd making appearances. Star with Webisode #1: 'Playing for Pennies,' where Andy dreams a movie trailer about Bobby as an underdog competitor in the real sport of penny can.

New webisodes premiere every Wednesday at 9:30 PM ET, with the final edition going up on February 9.

Check out the webisodes, then enter to win a 'Cougar Town' prize pack:

'Cougar Town' Moment: Jules Loses a Game of Sardines

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 27th 2011 8:00AM
Sardines in 'Cougar Town' - 'Lost Children' on ABCSometimes it's tough to choose a particular moment to explore during any particular 'Cougar Town' episode, mainly because each episode is a series of funny moments that are tied together with a little bit of a plot. Most of the plots are pretty straightforward: Andy doesn't like Grayson making fun of him, Bobby doesn't want to introduce his new girlfriend to the gang, Ellie wants to show Jules how much of a control freak she is.

But there aren't many shows who will join all of these plots together using a game of Sardines in a Can. Jules wanted to play it in order to get back a sense of childhood fun. Everyone else used the game to work out their own issues. And Ellie used it to teach Jules a lesson. Oh, and it didn't hurt from a comedy perspective that Jules is awful at the game.

'Cougar Town' Creators Talk Big Carl, Penny Can and the Cul de Sac Crew's Tropical Vacation

by Maureen Ryan, posted Jan 19th 2011 12:20PM
Try to picture 'Cougar Town's' Jules Cobb without her beloved oversized wine glass, Big Carl. Imagine the her friends in the cul de sac crew without their own glasses of red wine. Hard to picture, right? These things just go together. Who would think of splitting up such perfect pairings?

Yet a separation is coming for 'Cougar Town' fans. The delightful comedy is airing new episodes on Wednesday, on Jan. 26 and on Feb. 2, but ABC is taking the mischeivous cul de sac residents away from their usual slot for nine weeks starting Feb. 9. That's when the Courteney Cox comedy will be replaced with 'Mr. Sunshine,' a new show from her former 'Friends' co-star, Matthew Perry.

In a recent interview that took place, appropriately enough, on 'Cougar Town's' bar set, co-creators Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel talked about their plans to come back strong when the winning ensemble comedy returns April 13. Could the cul de sac crew be heading to Puerto Rico? Will Bobby Cobb be selling Penny Cans? Will Ken Jenkins be back as Jules' dad?

'Cougar Town' Moment: Kirsten Meddles With the Cul-de-Sac Crew

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 6th 2011 12:00PM
Here's how you know that the folks in Jules Cobb's "Cul-de-sac Gang" are a family: They can make fun of each other, and of the fact that they're trapped in Jules' "friend prison," but if someone on the outside messes with the delicate balance of things, the members of the gang rally around to protect their own.

It's a dynamic that's made 'Cougar Town' such an enjoyable show since it made its transformation a year or so ago. And it's also fun to watch the show's ancillary characters learn that lesson the hard way. Tom has been trying to weasel his way into the group all season, for instance, and has been rebuffed with malice every single time.

Travis' new girlfriend Kirsten has the advantage of being with someone who's not 100% happy he's in the group to begin with, and has warned her about getting involved. Even Grayson, the last outsider to get reeled in, told her to do whatever she could to keep herself out. But she couldn't leave well enough alone, and she ended up paying the price.

The Best and Worst of TV in 2010: 'Breaking Bad,' 'Modern Family,' 'Glee' and More

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 22nd 2010 5:30PM
Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston of 'Breaking Bad'During every Festivus season, we here at TV Squad reflect on what's happened during the past year in the world of the boob tube (I'll keep calling it that because "boob flat screen" doesn't flow as well).

We're in the midst of giving you our "12 Days of Festivus," my fellow Squadders have given their best and worst picks, and Mo Ryan has given what she liked and disliked this year.

So, how much more can we talk about? Plenty. 2010 was an active year in the television universe and there is plenty to talk about. As I've done in the past, I'll dispense with the usual "best show/worst show" mishegas and just make up the categories as I go along.

THE GOOD

The best season of television that almost no one saw:
The heart-attack inducing third season of 'Breaking Bad.' I've already said that the season, which ended over the summer, was the best season of dramatic television in the past decade, and it seems even better than that in retrospect.

Top 10 Most Powerful Female TV Characters in 2010

by Ryan McGee, posted Dec 19th 2010 11:30AM
Recent news of a potential relaunch/reboot of the 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' franchise sent shock waves through the fandom universe.
Loyal followers of 'Buffy' creator Joss Whedon decried the continuation of the Slayer saga without his involvement.

Whether or not 'Buffy' should exist without Whedon is up for debate. But having strong, powerful, complex women like Buffy Summers is absolutely not up for debate.

Now, did Buffy mark the advent of powerful female characters on television? Of course not. But even a cursory glance over the television landscape shows traces of that character's DNA ranging far and wide.

'Cougar Town' Moment: Ellie and Grayson Exchange Dirt on Each Other (VIDEO)

by Joel Keller, posted Dec 9th 2010 11:30AM
Ellie digs up dirt on Grayson in 'Cougar Town' on ABCLike it's lead-in, 'Modern Family', 'Cougar Town' decided to dispense with the usual Christmas-themed episode in favor of one that had much more meaning within the context of the series. We had some interesting moments in the Laurie/Travis friendship, and a really heartwarming story about Bobby's evolution since the series began. Brian Van Holt played that story very well, physically showing how much Bobby's changed in the last year and a half. If it took the sinking of the Jealous Much? to accomplish that, then so be it.

But what intrigued me the most was the slime war between Grayson and Ellie. We know that Ellie is capable of almost pure evil, but I never thought Grayson could be equally sneaky, unfeeling, and nefarious.
