'Cougar Town' Co-Creator Bill Lawrence Reacts to Bad News from ABC

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 19th 2011 4:05PM
'Cougar Town' got dealt some bad news late on Friday afternoon, when it was left on the bench for the second half of ABC's fall schedule. Fans took to Twitter to vent against ABC's decision and wondered if this meant the beloved niche comedy was canceled. But before anyone could change their avatars in a 'Community'-style show of support, Deadline reported 'Cougar Town' would return in March, with its episode order cut from 22 to 15.

'Cougar Town' co-creator Bill Lawrence, who goes by VDOOZER on Twitter, joined fans in reacting to the unfortunate news. "Look, we will be back, and the show will be on for a long time (Parks and Rec style). Only people hurt by reduced order - crew and fans," he tweeted.

ABC Announces 2012 Midseason Schedule; 'Cougar Town' MIA

by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 18th 2011 6:15PM
ABC has announced its 2012 midseason schedule, and one wine-soaked comedy is curiously missing from the list. 'Cougar Town,' despite a planned cameo offensive, is nowhere to be found. However, an ABC source has told TV Line that it will be back "sometime in the spring."

Also missing: 'Don't Trust the B---- in Apt. 23,' the new comedy that was set to be paired with 'Cougar Town.' The only new comedy to get a premiere date is 'Work It,' the network's cross-dressing sitcom that's already been critically panned.

The Cast and Crew of 'Cougar Town' Judge 'Food Network Star' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 27th 2011 9:45AM
Dan Byrd & Busy Philipps, 'Food Network Star'The contestants on 'Food Network Star' (Sun., 9PM ET on Food) got to visit the set of 'Cougar Town,' where they were given the challenge of cooking for various members of the show's staff. Three of them (Susie, Justin D. and Whitney) cooked for the cast, where we learned that Busy Philipps has a pretty discerning palette.

When it came time for their critiques, the best they could muster up about Justin D. seemed to be support for his glasses. "He's got that sexy Harry Potter chef thing going on," Brian Van Holt said.

There were several problems with Whitney's dish. Paula Deen was on-hand as well, and she said, "it was just like a vegetable dish. It bored me out of my gourd."

'Cougar Town' Returns With Its Goofy Charm (and Secret Serious Side) Intact

by Maureen Ryan, posted Apr 18th 2011 3:15PM
'Cougar Town,' (9:30PM ET Monday, ABC) has a silly name, and its characters often do goofy, immature things (and just to be clear, the latter tendency is part of the show's quite considerable charm).

Still, the comedy, which slides back into its usual 9:30PM ET slot on Wednesday, is deceptive. The two episodes that air this week are solidly funny in typically 'Cougar'-ian ways: There are lots of games of Penny Can, gallons of wine are drunk and the sharp ensemble cast slings mildly barbed banter with ease (there's even an amusing appearance from Ellie and Andy's often-absent baby).

But this week's episodes, like the show as a whole, explore real questions that everyone has to grapple with at some point. When is it a good idea to accept who and what you are? How much should you try to change deeply ingrained habits and attitudes? When is a flaw not really a flaw at all?

Carolyn Hennesy 'Surprised' by Daytime Emmy Nomination

by Michael Maloney, posted May 12th 2010 2:45PM
Carolyn HennesyIt turns out moonlighting can pay off.

Carolyn Hennesy's
been juggling two gigs for the past year -- scene-stealing Barb on 'Cougar Town' and savvy, sexy defense lawyer Diane on 'General Hospital.' The latter has scored her a Daytime Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress.

"I still think it's all a dream," Hennesy told TV Squad this morning. "It's all surreal. It hasn't hit me yet. It simply hasn't!"

Hennesy made the list last year -- alas, it was a list of 'overlooked' deserving stars who weren't given a nod. This year, however, the actress' performing peers, who are members of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, got it right. "No one is more surprised than me," continues Hennesy, who gives credit for her nom to the 'GH' scribes who've created such a vibrant character.

Becoming Special Friends on 'Cougar Town' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted May 6th 2010 12:30AM
Becoming Special Friends on 'Cougar Town'What do you do once you've slept with someone -- and you're not ready to take things to the next level? Jules (Courteney Cox) and Grayson (Josh Hopkins) have finally had sex on 'Cougar Town' (Wed., 9:30PM ET on ABC). But now, they don't know what to do. So Grayson gently suggests that they take things in a more "FWB" direction. What does that mean?

Jules says that maybe the whole having sex thing should just be "a one time deal." Grayson offers a mild rebuttal to this. "Or," he says, "we could just be friends... with benefits."

"You snuck that in at the end, didn't you?" Jules replies. "Friends... with benefits." Yes. Well played, Grayson.

Light, Escapist Shows Rise to the Head of the Freshman Class of 2009-10

by Gary Susman, posted Apr 30th 2010 3:30PM
When the going gets tough, the tough veg out in front of the tube.

Variety's picks for the top new series of the 2009-10 season suggest that, in these tough times, viewers' favorite new shows were generally the light, escapist, family-friendly ones. Most were comedies (including 'Community,' 'Glee,' and 'Modern Family'), but even the dramas were low-key affairs ('Parenthood,' the strangely reassuring 'Good Wife,' the fantasy 'Vampire Diaries').

Of the four new dramas on the list, only one was a crime procedural ('NCIS: Los Angeles'). Even the one reality show on the list was one that didn't involve competition and elimination ('Undercover Boss').

Sheryl Crow Croons on 'Cougar Town' (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Apr 1st 2010 1:32AM
Cougar Town, Sheryl CrowSheryl Crow was back on 'Cougar Town' (Wed., 9:30PM ET on ABC), crooning and canoodling with Grayson. Of course, the showrunners would have Crow sing at least once during her time on the show. Why waste a good opportunity?

Does anyone else find these appearances by musicians annoying? If they're doing it to promote an album, that's one thing. But if they're doing it to focus more on acting, then put the guitar down and act. Pick one.

Cougar Town, Sheryl CrowSheryl Crow has a proposition for Grayson, and it involves a wine named Hurpes (it's French) and a dinner date. But Ellie has a few words of warning on 'Cougar Town' (Wed., 9:30PM ET on ABC).

"His house is like a clown car for barely legal bimbos," said Ellie. No matter. Crow is as old as two 20-year-olds, "so maybe it'll feel like a menage trois." It's French.

What to Watch: March 22 - 28

by Stephanie Earp, posted Mar 22nd 2010 2:41AM

Cougar Town
- Wednesday March 24, 9:30 pm, Citytv/ABC

Sheryl Crow guest stars as a wine rep who sets her sights on Grayson. A wine rep, for those who aren't sure, is someone who lubricates the sales of wine to restaurants, bars, hotels, etc. It usually involves charm, some wine knowledge and an ability to hold one's liquor. They have so absolutely nailed the general feeling of the show with this choice of occupation that I think they should start over with the show and call it 'The Wine Reps' and make Jules and Ellie wine reps too. In all other ways the plot would remain the same - and the characters would drag a bottle of merlot around with them in every scene.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love 'Cougar Town'

by Patricia Chui, posted Mar 10th 2010 12:30PM
Cougar TownConfession: There is a half-hour ABC comedy, airing on Wednesdays, that I look forward to watching all week. It's smart, funny, quirky, one of the happy surprises of this past season -- and it isn't 'Modern Family.'

Well, all right, it is 'Modern Family.' But there's a second comedy in that same neck of the woods, sharing the 9PM hour like some overeager neighbor or a puppy begging you to pick it up. And though I gave it the brush-off at first, I am now, somewhat to my chagrin, forced to admit it. I caved. Yes, I love [whisper] 'Cougar Town.'

'Cougar Town' - 'What Are You Doin' In My Life?' Recap

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Mar 4th 2010 1:05AM
Cougar Town(S01E16) "That woman happens to be my family." - Laurie about Jules

I've been enjoying these last few episodes of 'Cougar Town' because the supporting characters have been fleshed out and have become a more central part of the show. This week was no different, as we not only met Laurie's mother but we also learned new tidbits about all characters, including Jules' real estate nemesis, Barb.

Another upside of this week's installment was the appearance of Beverly D'Angelo as Laurie's mother. Not only was it great casting because D'Angelo does look like she could be Busy Philipps' mother, but also because the 'National Lampoon' actress had the comedic acting skills needed to play Sheila, a superficial and bad mother.
