Bill O'Reilly is coming after YOU! - VIDEO
We've heard the audio of Bill O'Reilly's comments about how he was surprised at how a Syliva's, a restaurant in Harlem, was run and how the customers acted (and if you don't think there's something a little off-kilter about his words, then you're not listening close enough), and now O'Reilly is making a promise: if you say anything against him, he's coming after you.
Keith Olbermann has emergency surgery
Keith Olbermann was rushed into surgery Friday night to remove his appendix.
Olbermann missed his appearance on NBC's Football Night in America (not sure if the other hosts mentioned it or not because I'd rather watch Britney at the VMAs over and over again than watch a football game pre-show) and will also miss at least the first two nights of MSNBC's Countdown, tonight and tomorrow. His seat will be filled by Alison Stewart, though it's unclear right now if she'll continue the rest of the week if Olbermann needs more time to rest.
A spokesman for MSNBC says that Olbermann is "doing fine."

Is MSNBC making a mistake moving Scarborough?
Should MSNBC keep Joe Scarborough in primetime instead of giving him the morning slot?
MSNBC is showing remarkable growth in primetime for the third straight quarter. Scarborough Country was up 36% in the 9pm slot. Hardball with Chris Matthews was up 9% at 7pm, and Countdown with Keith Olbermann was up 54%. The network is up 49% in the 25-54 demographic overall in primetime, and 34% for the day total.
The ten most powerful people in TV news
I'm not exactly sure what they mean by "powerful" whenever these lists come out. Does it mean influence? Does it mean the most-watched? Probably a mish-mash of both, since the list includes anchors and network executives. Here's the list, according to TV Week. Last year's rank is in parentheses.
1. Roger Ailes - Chairman and CEO of FOX News (1)
NY Mag features Olbermann as "Limbaugh for lefties"
"Bush-bashing accidental liberal hero." "Keith the Impaler."
Those phrases were used to describe MSNBC's Keith Olbermann in a New York magazine profile of the cable talker who first earned fame as the wise cracking sports guy on ESPN's SportsCenter, which later inspired Aaron Sorkin's SportsNight.
The article -- which describes Olbermann as a "world class agitator" and "sworn enemy" of Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly -- says Olbermann appeals to liberals like radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh appeals to conservatives.
Keith Olbermann gets four more years
News anchor Keith Olbermann just signed on to four more years with MSNBC. His show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, has seen a steady rise in ratings lately, most likely due to his contempt for the Bush administration and his "Special Comment" segments that are popular with like-minded folk. Olbermann's Bush smackdowns are particularly popular on YouTube. He's also pretty well known for his campaign against Bill O'Reilly, who shares the same time slot over at Fox NewsChannel. "Bill-O", as Olbermann calls him, is frequently on the list of "Worst Person in the World" for something he has said. Despite all the goofy business, there is some actual news value to his show. Olbermann often runs reporters' packages from NBC Nightly News and then analyzes (as cable news networks like to do) events with various experts. If politics shift in this country after the 2008 presidential election, it will be interesting to see whether Olbermann can keep the wind in his sails.
Why is Jericho going on hiatus? Because of you!
Tonight marks the "fall finale" of Jericho. It's a term we've been hearing a lot this season (Lost has used it in their advertising too), and it looks like the web and web surfers are the reason shows are taking a break.
CBS' David Poltrack says the reason why Jericho can afford to take a break for two months right in the middle of the season is because they're able to put up enough original content online to satisfy fans and keep things going. Besides being able to watch episodes of the show online, fans can also see interviews with the cast and crew, as well as a special video series titled "Countdown," which gives viewers info about what would happen if a real attack occurred.
What do you think of the break that shows like Jericho and Lost are taking? Do you think it's a good idea? Is it a good idea only because these are serial shows and the break might be a good thing? Would you accept a break like this if it was The Office or CSI? I think we'll see more of this because of the web. I even wonder that someday, the networks might put an episode of a series exclusively online, right in the middle of the season, so they can run a special or something in the show's time slot. That might be an interesting experiment too.
Olbermann up 67%, Fox News still leads
See? See? I do report on FOX News things!
The cable network not only has nine of the top ten news shows, it also celebrated it's 250th week as being #1. Yay! Balloons and candy for everyone! (Though the network is down 17% in the daytime numbers from last year, and down 25% in primetime).
Over on MSNBC, the news is good too. The network's ratings are up, which kind of depresses me because they're up since started that damn "doc block" and heading towards more taped feature programming. But Countdown with Keith Olbermann is up 67%, and that's a very telling number.
In other cable news news, remember when Anderson Cooper was brought in to co-host Aaron Brown's show, and then Brown was shown the door? Look who's co-hosting Paula Zahn's show over on CNN. Hmmm...
Choose: Olbermann or O'Reilly
Okay, the title of this post is meant as a joke; you don't really have to choose between Keith Olbermann or Bill O'Reilly. Frequent visitors to TV Squad have probably noticed, however, that the mere mention of either of those names always results in a lot of spirited debate among readers. How is it these two men wield such power over us lowly terrestrial beings? I don't know, but I offer this question to our loyal and always opinionated readers: which of these men do you prefer to watch, and why? Or, is there someone else you like to watch besides these two men?
Keith Olbermann is no Casanova
Hell hath no fury, as they say. The New York Post is reporting that a woman who had a one-night stand with MSNBC's Keith Olbermann was quite upset when the Countdown anchor hit the road after a session of sub par love making. The woman is so upset she started a blog about the ordeal, a blog that is apparently invite only. According to the woman, identified as "KarmaBites1" she and Olbermann met over e-mail, and after their night together he told her not to contact him again. You'll have to excuse my frankness here, but don't most guys say what they need to say to get laid and then make up excuses as to why they have to leave? "I'm sorry, but I have to go, I left a time bomb under my grandma and I only have ten minutes to dismantle it." Isn't this just part of the cycle of bitter relationships that culminates in a person growing old and eventually marrying anyone who's available and then having children through which they try to live vicariously to make up for the life they wish they had, smoking menthol cigarettes at youth sporting events and cursing at the coach between long wet coughs that sound like a draft horse choking on moist celery while a half empty flask of vodka rests at the bottom of their purse? Then again, maybe my grim view of human nature is misplaced. Perhaps I should see my doctor about upping the dosage on my medication. Either way, I hope we've all learned something today, whatever it might be.

Another bad decision by MSNBC
First they introduced that "Doc-Bloc" at 10pm every night (oh boy, more shows about prisons and teachers who rape kids!), then they changed their on-screen graphics, and now they've made it very easy for me to watch CNN in the afternoon.
Rita Cosby is anchoring at 1pm.
Now, nothing against Cosby personally. I'm sure she's a nice woman and newsperson. But...her voice. I'm sorry, but there's no possible way that I can listen to her Brenda Vacarro-meets-Grover-from-Sesame-Street voice for two, three, four hours a day. I don't know if this is a permanent move or if she's filling in for someone, but if she's on, I'm watching CNN.
It's getting more and more clear that the only reason to watch MSNBC at all is for Countdown With Keith Olbermann, which has quickly become Must-See television.
FOX bitch slaps Keith Olbermann
Keith Olbermann spends a significant amount of time on his MSNBC show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, bashing all things FOX. Bill O'Reilly takes most of the heat, frequently landing on the list of Worst Person in the World. Now FOX's public relations department is striking back in a very snarky way. Check out what FOX spokesperson Irena Briganti said to the New York Times:"Because of his personal demons, Keith has imploded everywhere he's worked. From lashing out at co-workers to personally attacking Bill O'Reilly and all things Fox, it's obvious Keith is a train wreck waiting to happen. And like all train wrecks, people might tune in out of morbid curiosity, but they eventually tune out, as evidenced by Keith's recent ratings decline. In the meantime, we hope he enjoys his paranoid view from the bottom of the ratings ladder and wish him well on his inevitable trip to oblivion."
Oh, snap!
And I Quote: the best one-liners of the week
"Star Jones, how can we miss you if you don't go away?" - Keith Olbermann, on Countdown. - "It's thinking like that that's forced women to live with their original ribs." - Nina, to Elliott, who said there's no such thing as surgery to have your belly button centered, on Just Shoot Me.
- "He only sells them, he doesn't wear 'em." - George's mother, about her date with bra salesmen Sid Farkus after seeing her husband with a male bra on, on Seinfeld.
- "This means she's now golddigging for two!" - David Letterman, about Anna Nicole Smith's pregnancy.
Olbermann and Matthews are safe, but...
Looks like there are a lot of changes coming to MSNBC in the next few months, and that might mean some hosts might be out of a job.The first big change - and a shocking one - was the hiring of Dan Abrams as the new head of the news network. He was the top legal correspondent and host of the daily Abrams Report, and now he's in charge of the whole network. He says changes are coming, and it looks like many of the nighttime talk shows might be scrapped in favor of more taped reports and shows. As for daytime coverage, Abrams wants more "breaking news" coverage.
Two shows that won't be going anywhere? Countdown with Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews' Hardball.
Olbermann gets serious about O'Reilly
Most of the time when Keith Olbermann goes after FOX News' Bill O'Reilly, it's with a wink and a nudge and often very funny. Not last night. After the Stewie Griffin opening, Olbermann lays into O'Reilly, this time about what he said (not once, but twice) about a horrible event in World War II where several unarmed U.S. soldiers were shot and killed by Germans. O'Reilly continues to say that it was the other way around, that it was American soldiers that killed unarmed Germans. O'Reilly has not only refused to say he's wrong, Olbermann also reports that FOX News actually changed the transcript on their web site to make O'Reilly look better.YouTube has the video of Olbermann's report. He reports, you decide.
