4 TV Pairings We Want on 'Between Two Ferns' (VIDEO)

by Ryan McKee, posted Feb 16th 2011 4:32PM
Between Two FernsZach Galifianakis is a master at turning awkwardness into hilarity. While Steve Carell and Ricky Gervais also possess that skill, the bearded comedian does it in his own unique way with supreme subtlety and silliness.

A perfect example of that is his Web series on Funny or Die called 'Between Two Ferns With Zach Galifianakis.' He plays a less famous, simpler-minded version of himself and interviews celebrities as if he knows very little about their careers. Stars who have appeared include Conan O'Brien, Natalie Portman, Jon Hamm, Bruce Willis and Charlize Theron.

One of the best episodes of 'Between Two Ferns' is also the most recent. Galifianakis opens by interviewing MySpace phenom and reality star Tila Tequila. After a minute, he announces they have another guest, Jennifer Aniston, but wants Tequila to stick around (as if they're on a late-night talk show).

Criss Angel Levitates and Vanishes on 'Mindfreak' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Sep 9th 2010 10:20AM
Levitating and Vanishing on 'Criss Angel: Mindfreak'Criss Angel combined two classic tricks into one on 'Mindfreak' (Wed., 10PM ET on AETV), levitating high above the ground and then vanishing from sight.

Crossing his ankles, Angel lifted off from the pavement. With a white sheet wrapped around his neck, he rose into the air, making weird breathing noises (like whispered howls) in the process -- all to the accompaniment of synthesizer music. The illusionist then pulled the sheet down over the front of his body, let out a yell, and -- poof -- he disappeared and the sheet plummeted to the ground.

Check the video for the closeup replay from a different angle.

Criss Angel Escapes from Box Dangling Over Grand Canyon on 'Mindfreak' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Sep 2nd 2010 10:15AM
Criss Angel Escapes from Dangling Box on 'Mindfreak'For his latest great escape, Criss Angel is trapped in a box that's dangling 4,000 feet above the Grand Canyon floor. On 'Criss Angel: Mindfreak' (Wed., 10PM ET on AETV), he explains, "As I get closer to completing and being successful in this escape, it becomes more dangerous. Because I must disassemble this crate from the inside out."

As he begins the stunt, his arms are visible, stretched through two holes in the box and chained outside. He starts by freeing these, then sets to work inside the box. Midway through his escape, two of the four hanging cables detach from the box, causing it to abruptly swing, lopsided, above the canyon. Several in the gathered crowd scream.

The box eventually flies open to reveal: nothing. No one. Where is he?

Criss Angel Makes 100 People Vanish on 'Mindfreak' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Aug 26th 2010 9:00AM
100 People Vanish on 'Criss Angel: Mindfreak'Can Criss Angel make 100 strangers disappear all at once? If you believe what you see on 'Criss Angel: Mindfreak' (Wed., 10PM ET on AETV), then, yes he can.

Angel gathers 100 people behind a curtain and films the proceedings with a hand-held camera. He shows the volunteers handcuffed (technically, ankle-cuffed) to their neighbors. He then instructs them to close their eyes, take deep breaths and "visualize yourself becoming completely invisible."

Angel turns the camera on himself, the curtain is dropped, and he's standing alone. "One hundred gone!" he yells. The trick is shown from the viewpoint of a backstage camera as well.

Criss Angel Escapes Underwater Shackles and Concrete Shoes on 'Mindfreak' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Aug 19th 2010 9:30AM
Criss Angel's Underwater Escape on 'Mindfreak'Like the famous "escapologist" Harry Houdini, Criss Angel had a "death-defying" breakout of his own on 'Criss Angel Mindfreak' (Wed., 10PM ET on AETV).

In this rendition, he was chained, shackled, handcuffed, wrapped in rope, and his feet were cemented in concrete. Angel was then dunked into Arizona's Lake Havasu.

Under water, he was able to wriggle from the handcuffs, rip off the chains and somehow hammer his feet free (?). The gathered crowds above him couldn't see a thing -- they could only count. He supposedly held his breath for nearly four minutes. Truth or fiction? You decide.

New TV on DVD releases this week

by Bob Sassone, posted Dec 14th 2009 6:01PM
Star TrekHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

I think I might have asked this question before, but I'll ask it again: just how many Star Trek (original series) sets are there? There seems to be a new one released every few months. I know there are Blu-ray sets being released now, but at what point does even the most die-hard Trek fan say enough is enough and they're not going to buy any more? A friend of mine loves Star Trek and seems to buy every new version of the show that comes out.

  • Cake Boss - Cake Boss
  • Criss Angel Mindfreak - Season 5 and Collector's Edition Megaset
  • Ice Road Truckers - Season 3
  • The Maxx - Complete Series
  • The Paper Chase - Season 2
  • Robot Chicken - Season 4
  • Sherlock Holmes - The Collection
  • Star Trek - Season 3 (Blu-ray)
  • The Tudors - Season 3
  • Wagon Train - Season 1
  • Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie

What's Hot on SlashControl: Criss Angel Mindfreak - Bike Jump Vanish

by Jane Boursaw, posted Nov 29th 2009 9:03AM
I'm the perfect Criss Angel Mindfreak viewer, because I have no idea how he does all those stunts and tricks. I'd like to, though!

And while Criss seems just plain freaky, he's always the perfect gentleman when dealing with people. Except for times when he does something completely freaky and you'd think the people involved would have a heart attack.

In one episode, I watched a guy who seemed like he was actually having his head cut off by a guillotine. It seemed so real, because Criss was running around telling people to call 911 and whatnot, and the guy's wife was nearly having a stroke. Unless they were in on it, that was way too cruel a trick to play on anyone.

In this clip from our sister site SlashControl, Criss trains with champion aerialist and world record jump holder Trigger Gunn to jump a 60-foot long, 20-foot high ramp at 50 mph. Apparently, Criss is a longtime fan of motorcycle jump legend Evel Knieval.

What's Hot on SlashControl: Criss Angel Mindfreak - Halloween Special

by Jane Boursaw, posted Oct 21st 2009 1:03PM
Criss Angel Mindfreak - Halloween SpecialI'm kind of mesmerized by Criss Angel. He's definitely one freaky guy -- or is that mindfreaky? -- and every time I surf by him, I have to back up and watch whatever unbelievable, death-defying stunt he's performing. For one thing, he looks like a vampire. But a very polite vampire. I can see how all the female stars fall in love with him.

I got involved in a Criss Angel Mindfreak marathon not too long ago, and am still stumped as to how he does those levitations, his signature magic trick. I'm not kidding, he took an entire room of people and levitated them, some in bizarre positions that could never be done, even if the person was wide awake and as flexible as an Olympic gymnast.

We're talking backward bends, leaning to the point of toppling over and, of course, 20 feet off the ground. Someone tell me how he does that?!! I'm such a sucker for magic tricks.

New TV on DVD releases this week

KingsHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

This might not be the biggest DVD release day in history, but it's certainly one of the business. There's something for everyone this week, including a bunch of "Fan Favorites" DVDs for various sitcoms, including NewsRadio, All in the Family, and I Dream of Jeannie. That's a neat idea, though I wonder, if you're a big fan, wouldn't you already have the DVDs?

Oh, and remember Day Break, the ABC mystery series from a couple of years ago? You can get the Complete Series. I don't think I ever saw the end of that show. You can watch it on SlashControl, so maybe I'll start there before buying the set.

  • All in the Family - Fan Favorites
  • Ax Men - Season 2
  • Barney Miller - Fan Favorites
  • Bewitched - Fan Favorites

This week on TV: A leaning tower of fondant on 'Cake Boss,' Criss Angel gets buried alive and the 'Mad Men' are back. -- By Kim Potts

MONDAY, AUG. 10

Cake Boss'Cake Boss' (10PM, TLC)
We still love Duff and the 'Ace of Cakes' gang, but New Jersey baker Buddy Valastro is one of the best new surprises of the summer, and watching him in action as the titular head cake maker at Hoboken's Carlos Bakery has been the year's least-guilty pleasure. On the menu in tonight's episode: The Leaning Tower of Pisa, replicated in cake, and a lobster-themed cake that Buddy scrambles to assemble after the client mixes up the date.
