Fixing NBC at 10

by Brett Love, posted Jan 30th 2007 2:14PM
NBCWhen 10PM rolls around, it's generally not a pleasant time for NBC. Mostly it's where the network goes to get its hat handed to it by somebody. What the strategy is for the 10 o'clock slot boggles me. So far, my best explanation sounds like the plot from a bad Lucy episode.

Imagine Lucy and Ethel get a gig cleaning the offices at NBC. Some crazy hijinks erupt and somehow all the shows get knocked off of the big magnetic schedule board. They do their best to try and put them back, but it seems they have mixed up a few of the shows at 10. The executives all come in the next day and everyone assumes that someone else made the change. Not wanting to rock the boat, they all just roll with it, to the detriment of the shows and the network. Here's what Lucy and Ethel got wrong, and what NBC needs to fix.

9 pm: The Apprentice
10 pm: Crossing Jordan

Heroes makes the cover of Entertainment Weekly

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 6th 2006 8:14AM

HeroesI've mentioned several times here that I'm getting sick of all the times Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, and CSI have made the covers of both Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide. So it was really great to see the cast of Heroes on the cover this week.

Among some of the tidbits revealed in the article: Masi Oka (Hiro) worked on the special effects for The Perfect Storm; Ali Larter (Niki) bought herself a Porsche when the show was picked up for the whole season, and almost accidentally hit Kanye West with it; creator Tim Kring talked to Lost producer Damon Lindelof, a good friend, about the idea when he came up with it; and the first season finale is going to blow everyone away, especially regarding one major revelation. And speaking of...

Warning! This article contains several spoilers about the rest of the season!

Heroes creator Tim Kring interviewed, twice

by Brett Love, posted Oct 16th 2006 11:33AM

Tim KringTim Kring has been around TV a long time, with writing credits that go back as far as Knight Rider and Misfits of Science. He's probably better known for his more recent work though, writing for Providence, and creating Crossing Jordan and Heroes. It looks like Heroes could very well be his most successful show to date. With NBC already picking it up for a full season and solid ratings each week, it is one of just a few new shows that could be deemed a hit.

Kring has recently done a couple of interviews that shed a little light on just what they are up to with the show. There are some small spoilers, just so you know. The thing that sticks out to me is what he says when asked about how long the show will go, and what the overall plan is. "At the end of season one, there will be a resolution to the pilot's prophecy." That's good to know. You can find the interviews at TV addict, and TV Guide. Heroes airs tonight at 9, on NBC.

NBC bumps Crossing Jordan for new game show

by Anna Johns, posted Sep 28th 2006 11:00AM
crossing jordanSorry, Crossing Jordan fans. NBC has pushed back the season premiere, in favor of a new game show hosted by Bob Saget. The game show is called 1 vs 100 and it's a game where one contestant battles 100 other people to win $1 million. It's the American version of a game show that is already popular in Europe. The series premiere is at 8 pm on October 20th, as a lead-in to the season premiere of Las Vegas.

NBC hasn't announced a new premiere date for Crossing Jordan.

Three more series are renewed for NBC's fall schedule

by Richard Keller, posted Apr 28th 2006 6:08PM

James Caan of Las VegasGee, with all of the announcements NBC is making about its upcoming fall schedule, I'm not too sure what they're going to talk about during the upfronts come May. I guess they'll play charades with the press. Or perhaps their advanced notice is a subtle message to advertisers.

We first reported that NBC has renewed all three shows in the Law & Order franchise for next season. Now, three more dramas are joining the list:  Medium, Las Vegas, and Crossing Jordan. What, no Joey? All three series drew about 11 million viewers per episode, with Las Vegas holding on to much of its audience during the show's move to Friday nights.

And the circle is complete: a blog entry about a story about TV shows that blog

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 5th 2006 6:31PM
Jenna Fischer of The OfficeInteresting article in USA Today; it examines how TV shows are using blogs, some fictional, some not, to lure in new viewers and retain current ones. The article cites blogs from shows whose blogging reputations are well known (The Office, Grey's Anatomy) to shows you'd never expect to have blogs (Crossing Jordan? NCIS?).

One of the links is to Jenna Fischer's MySpace page. This one's interesting; even though the front page for The Office star's page looks like it was written by her character, Pam Beasley, the blog within is written by Jenna from her perspective. So it's a weird blend of character and actor that I actually find more interesting that blogs written by fictional characters, like the one Rainn Wilson writes in the voice of Dwight Schrute.

Oh, and in the section of the article that mentions the "explosion" of TV blogs, they speak to Sherri Lonon, a writer for a blog called teevblogger.com, which I've admittedly never heard of until now. While Sherri gave some nice insights, I think they would have gotten some nice quotes if they came to us here at TVS (especially if they talked to Adam or Bob). Your, loss, USA Today... your loss!

Things I Hate About TV: The Crossover

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Jan 14th 2006 3:37PM

Richard BelzerDear television viewer:

In an effort to further drain you of all your energy, tonight's episode of Extremely Popular TV Drama will involve a cliffhanger to be resolved next week on an episode of That Other Extremely Popular TV Drama which airs on a different night and time.  We hope you enjoy.

Your friends, The Insane Network Executives.

Am I the only one who hates this? For whatever reason, it really bugs me when TV worlds collide. I just can't deal with the notion that, just maybe, Jack Bauer and Sydney Bristow work down the street from each other. Someone who works on a much higher floor than me thinks this is great idea though. Joel briefly mentioned them in his Festivus post from a few weeks ago, but I've got a whole rant in me.

Sunday Ratings: All about the brackets

by David Thomas, posted Mar 21st 2005 4:50PM
SimpsonsThe Duke-Mississippi State game running into primetime gave CBS the nightly ratings with the game's 16.4 million viewers. That crowd stuck around for “60 Minutes” drawing 16.3 million viewers and “Cold Case” with 16.5 million. Even “Spring Break Shark Attack” drew 11.5 million idiots...I mean viewers. Over at ABC a rerun of “Desperate Housewives” attracted 13.2 million slowpokes and “Boston Legal” finished with 11.4 million. Wait a second, a new “Boston Legal” had less viewers than “Spring Break Shark Attack?” Travesty. “The Contender” is slowly improving to 7.8 million viewers. But that's still not good considering “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” drew 12.3 million and “Crossing Jordan” drew 11.2 million. “The Simpsons” are flat these days with only 8.6 million viewers and “Arrested Development” is doing poorly as well with 5.9 million.
