J.R. Martinez Says 'DWTS' Last Night 'Was an Out-of-Body Experience'

by Catherine Lawson, posted Nov 8th 2011 6:15AM
J.R. Martinez, 'DWTS' 13There's been a lot of criticism this season that 'Dancing With the Stars' is becoming nothing but a popularity contest, with dancers getting by on public votes rather than talent. However, in the background each week J.R. Martinez and his partner Karina Smirnoff have quietly been getting better and better. Last night they not only scored the first perfect 30 of the season for their waltz, they went on to score another 30 for their jive.

After recent contentious bust-ups on the show --- Maks vs. Len, Chaz and Lacey vs. Bruno, accusations of favoritism -- it was a welcome return to what the show is all about: Watching hard work pay off in the form of some really great dancing.

So, how does it feel to be the winningest couple on this season of 'DWTS?' Speaking to reporters on the post-show press line, a clearly delighted Martinez thanked Smirnoff for being "an amazing teacher," and he told OnTheRedCarpet.com that in rehearsals he'd "felt really good about the waltz ... and I felt I'd have a good opportunity to do well."

'Dancing With the Stars' Week 8: J.R. Gets Two Perfect Scores & Nancy Falls From Grace

by Crystal Bell, posted Nov 7th 2011 11:40PM
dancing with the stars week 8To quote the lovably looney Bruno Tonioli, it was a night of miracles in the ballroom during this week's 'Dancing With the Stars.' It was the last dance-off before the semi-finals, and everyone brought their A-game. But no one brought it quite like J.R. Martinez. The Iraq War veteran not only scored the first perfect score of the season for his dreamy waltz -- but then he did it again with his high-energy jive. That's a perfect score of 60, and it was just as incredible as it sounds.

This week J.R. was on a mission to dance a perfect waltz, and he most certainly succeeded. The pair got a standing ovation -- before their dance was even finished. J.R. and Karina were absolutely lovely together, so it's pretty fitting that the two would receive that first perfect score of the season. Despite J.R.'s goofy moves in rehearsals, this soldier is in it to win it. His lines were clean, his toes were pointed and he even managed to pull off some pretty impressive tricks (watch out, Derek!).

Chaz Bono Lashes Out at Tabloid for Predicting His Death

by Crystal Bell, posted Nov 4th 2011 4:00PM
Chaz BonoChaz Bono is upset after the National Enquirer published a story predicting the death of the former 'Dancing With the Stars' contestant. The headline read: "Chaz Bono -- Only 4 Years to Live!"

The article cites Dr. Patrick Wanis, who claims Bono's weight combined with the stress of his recent appearance on 'DWTS' and various medications associated with his gender reassignment will "increase Chaz's risk of an early death." The Enquirer claims that Wanis predicts Bono will likely die by 2015.

Needless to say, Bono was not happy, and according to TMZ, he's firing back.

'Dancing With the Stars' Week Seven Elimination (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 2nd 2011 12:15AM
'Dancing With the Stars'If you were to go by the judges' scores this week on 'Dancing With the Stars' (Tue., 9PM ET on ABC), we'd be saying goodbye to Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus. She had the lowest combined totals from the judges across two performances this week.

But we know that America doesn't always agree with the judges, and popularity is as much a factor as anything else. David Arquette and J.R. Martinez also scored below a 50, but really it could've been virtually anyone going as the scores tend to tighten up as we near the end of competition.

'Dancing With the Stars' Week 7: Hope's Redemption & Ricki's Back On Top

by Crystal Bell, posted Nov 1st 2011 12:10AM
It was a good night to be Hope Solo. After an embarrassing night on the dance floor during last week's 'Dancing With the Stars,' and the very public fallout between her partner Maks and judge Len Goodman, Hope proved that she could once again have fun in the ballroom. Meanwhile, Maks was purposely quiet on the dance floor, but even more self-righteous than ever in rehearsals.

This week, all three judges praised Hope and Maks' sexy werewolf samba. Perhaps they didn't want to upset the big bad wolf like they did last week? For one of the first times ever, Hope looked like she was finally having a good time on the dance floor -- but it didn't look that way during rehearsals.

In fact, it looked pretty painful.

Carrie Ann Inaba Defends 'Dancing' Judges and Talks About Chaz's Elimination (VIDEO)

by Stephanie Opella, posted Oct 26th 2011 5:15PM
As things heat up in the evening on 'Dancing With the Stars,' 'Access Hollywood Live' (weekdays, syndicated on NBC) has become a place for the judges to say their peace the morning after. Yesterday Len Goodman addressed Maks' request for him to retire, and today Carrie Ann Inaba talked about Chaz Bono's elimination while defending the judge's ability to remain impartial.

After getting eliminated, Chaz had some catty words for the judges. "I didn't really ever say hello to them so there's not really much of a need to say goodbye." He also said that he felt a bias against him throughout the show, even though he made it to week 6 with minimal dancing skills.

Inaba defended Chaz's elimination, saying, "I commended Chaz on what he was doing, because what he was doing is very important in the larger scope of life. But the scoring has to do with what they're doing dance-wise. We are able to separate the two," she said.

Katie Couric Still Wants to Be on 'Dancing With the Stars'

by Chris Harnick, posted Oct 26th 2011 11:20AM
Katie CouricIn the latest "I want to be on 'Dancing With the Stars'" news, Katie Couric has taken to Twitter to voice her desire to do the rumba on live TV.

"DWTS is my guilty pleasure!," she tweeted. "1 day hope I'll be on it...b4 I'm using a walker! Ha! But there might not be enuf anti perspirant on the planet!" [sic]

However, this isn't the first time Couric has spoken up about wanting to join the dancing competition. In September 2010, Couric said wanted to cha cha cha for the mirrorball trophy.

"My secret fantasy, sadly, is to be on 'Dancing With the Stars,'" she told UsMagazine.com. At the time she said she'd be worried about "those skimpy outfits!"

Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer Blast Bruno Tonioli for Rude Remarks

by Catherine Lawson, posted Oct 26th 2011 7:15AM
Chaz Bono and Lacey SchwimmerHas Maksim Chmerkovskiy talking back to Len Goodman opened up the floodgates for more dancer vs. judge spats? After the furor surrounding the Maks vs. Len bust-up on 'Dancing With the Stars' Monday, emotions were running high on last night's results show, and the spotlight moved to judge Bruno Tonioli vs. Chaz Bono.

After the show, the newly eliminated Bono and pro dance partner Lacey Schwimmer were gracious in defeat, but had harsh words for Tonioli backstage. And Bono's fiercely protective mother Cher came out swinging on Twitter to lambast the Italian judge.

The reason for all the anger? On Monday Tonioli decribed Bono's 'Phantom of the Opera'-inspired performance as "a cute little penguin trying to be a big menacing bird of prey." Coming after a previous critique when he said watching the pair "was like watching a little Ewok dance with Princess Leia," Schwimmer decided she'd had enough. "He got under scored again," she Tweeted, "and tonights comments were the cherry on top. Having a judge refer to him as an animal every Week is so rude and unnecessary."

'Dancing With the Stars' Week Six Elimination (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 25th 2011 10:45PM
'Dancing With the Stars'After an emotional performance show, in which Maks lost his cool with Len, it was bound to be a tense elimination on 'Dancing With the Stars' (Tue., 8PM ET on ABC). Maksim Chmerkovskiy and his partner, Hope Solo, scored a 20 from the judges, which was better than only one other couple, Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer, who got 19.

Audience votes make up the difference of the vote, obviously, which had to leave Maks and Hope sweating waiting for the final word. We've seen how their fellow contestants felt, many of whom felt he may have crossed the line. Would America agree?

Len Goodman Speaks Out on His 'Dancing' Feud With Maks Chmerkovskiy (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 25th 2011 2:00PM
Everyone's buzzing about the feud that erupted between Maks Chmerkovskiy and 'Dancing With the Stars' judge Len Goodman when Maks forcefully pushed back against Goodman's critique of his latest dance with Hope Solo.

Goodman stopped by 'Access Hollywood Live' (weekdays, syndicated on NBC) to offer his perspective on the argument. "How often, in the heat of the moment, we say things that the next day we think 'why did I say that?'" he asked. "Maks is going through that right now."

Goodman isn't taking the back-and-forth personally, though. "I like Maks, we're good buddies, we play golf together," Goodman noted, before taking a jab at Maks' golf-swing. He then further clarified the judges' role on 'DWTS.' "What they've got to understand is ... they're on trial, and we're the judges. You can't be a judge at your own trial," Goodman said.

Does 'DWTS' Head Judge Len Goodman Need a Vacation?

by Catherine Lawson, posted Oct 25th 2011 9:20AM
Len Goodman, 'DWTS'Is the strain of his heavy workload and weekly transatlantic commute starting to take its toll on 'Dancing With the Stars' head judge Len Goodman? He and Bruno Tonioli have a punishing schedule, pulling double duty judging 'DWTS' during the week, and then flying back to the UK to judge the BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing' at the weekend.

Now Len's had blow-ups with pro dancers on both shows in the space of just a few days. Is he crankier than usual? Last night he and Maksim Chmerkovskiy had a major falling out after Maks interrupted Len's harsh critique of his rumba. That bust up followed a furious on-air altercation with 'Strictly' dancer James Jordan on Saturday night, during which Len told him, "All you have to do is turn up, keep up and shut up."

Is an irascible Len overdue for a vacation? Well, luckily for him he'd already booked one before it got nasty on the dancefloor(s). It's been announced that Len is taking a week off from 'Strictly' next month, and subbing-in for him as guest judge on Nov. 5 and 6 will be none other than 'DWTS' Season 11 champ, Jennifer Grey.

Maks vs. Len: 'Dancing With the Stars' Contestants Speak Out

by Catherine Lawson, posted Oct 25th 2011 6:15AM
Maks and Hope Solo, 'DWTS'The oft-shirtless Maksim Chmerkovskiy's always filled the role of 'Dancing With the Stars' bad boy, and he can be relied upon to have at least one big outburst each season, with his anger usually directed toward head judge Len Goodman. Last night he reached boiling point and again lashed out at Len after he criticized Maks' and partner Hope Solo's rumba.

When Maks questioned Len's credentials, the head judge said "I've been in this business for nearly 50 years," to which Maks quipped "Maybe it's time to go." Things escalated after Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli tried to intervene, and Maks said "Everybody on that balcony has been dying and killing themselves only to hear your guy's a little judgmental comments [sic]. ... I am not being disrespectful, I'm protecting my partner."

Up until that point it was just between Maks and the judges, but then did the Ukrainian take it too far? When he told host Brooke Charvet that "With all due respect, this is my show, I help make it what it is," the look on fellow pro dancer Derek Hough's face in the background was priceless. So, what did the other dancers think of his outburst? And does Maks regret saying what he did?

'Dancing With the Stars' Week 6: Maks & Len Have a Major Fallout

by Crystal Bell, posted Oct 24th 2011 11:40PM
Oh Maks, sometimes you need to really hold in your feisty temper. Maks definitely brought the drama to 'Dancing With the Stars' this week -- but not in the way you're probably thinking. In fact, I don't think anyone saw this coming.

Maks and Len had a total fall-out in the ballroom this week, after Len criticized Hope, calling her rumba "her worst dance of the whole season." Well, Maks didn't quite like that and riled up the already cheering crowd, interrupting Len's critique. That's when Len snapped.

You see, Len gets the reputation for being the most critical judge for a reason. He actually judges for skill, and as he pointed out, he's been doing it for quite some time now. And that's where Maks decided to tell Len that maybe it was time for him to quit. His exact words: "Maybe it's time to go!" Oh snap.

Chaz Bono to Receive GLSEN Respect Award

by Crystal Bell, posted Oct 21st 2011 1:30PM
Chaz Bono may or may not have a shot at taking home the Mirror Ball trophy on 'Dancing With the Stars' this year, but he will be taking home a much more important award: the 2011 GLSEN Hero Award.

GLSEN -- the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network -- is honoring Bono, among others, at the seventh annual 2011 Respect Awards in Beverly Hills.

The Respect Awards are meant to honor individuals and corporations that have made significant advances in areas like diversity and inclusion.

Bono, a LGBT activist and author, legally became a man last year after gender-reassignment surgery. Bono's transition was the subject of the Emmy-nominated OWN documentary, 'Becoming Chaz,' as well as his own book, titled 'Transition,' which was released in May 2011.

Pee Wee Herman Dancing With the StarsPee-wee Herman wants to dance! Let's make this happen.

"[I go] to support my friend David Arquette," Pee-wee said. "I hope to be dancing myself on Dancing With the Stars next season! That's why I'm there all the time, to get my face up there. Trying to butter up the producers and everything. Jury's out, I haven't heard yet."
