Which Contestants from Past 'Idol' Seasons Should the Judges Have Saved?

by Gabrielle Dunn, posted Apr 13th 2010 11:15AM
Michael JohnsSave the rocker. Save the diva. Save 'Idol.' Save the world?

'Idol' is notorious for its "shocking" results shows, but some contestants just plain go home too soon. Each season, one talented front-runner has failed to advance as far as the judges predicted, and the Judges' Save -- which allows for the 'Idol' judges to keep one eliminated contestant in the competition, despite America's having voted him or her off -- was created to solve that very problem.

Last season, it was used for pianist Matt Giraud, who ultimately placed fifth; last week, it came in handy for Michael Lynche, who must now try to avoid the dreaded double-elimination.

The rule was only introduced in season 8, but it would have been useful on 'Idol' during most prior seasons. Read on to see who we think the judges would have saved had the rule been in place from the start.

by Jane Boursaw, posted Dec 31st 2009 10:00AM
Ryan SeacrestAs the click ticks down to 2010, many of us look forward to watching that famous ball drop in Times Square. While hundreds of thousands will gather in New York City to see the event first-hand, most of us will be home in our comfy pajamas watching from our living rooms.

'Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2010' begins at 10 PM ET on ABC and runs through 2:05 AM. The just-married 'Good Morning America' special correspondent Melissa Rycroft will be chatting with revelers in Times Square, while pop star Fergie will host segments from Las Vegas' new venue, Aria at City Center.

America's Got Talent: Results show three

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Aug 20th 2009 1:12AM
America's Got Talent(S04E18) "The most electrifying show yet!" - Nick, about last night's performance show

Nick is right. Last night was electrifying, even if a few acts got X'd. It was one of the best show's we've had so far this season.

As I noted in my review of the performance episode, I expected Jeffrey Ou to lose some votes because viewers weren't able to hear him play the piano in the second part of his acts. But a few of our site visitors said they voted for him because he wasn't given a fair chance.

Will Jeffrey get another chance by moving on to the Top 20? Results coming up!

My thoughts on the "Daughtry Rule" on American Idol

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 13th 2009 2:00PM
Chris DaughtryI know they're not calling it the "Daughtry Rule" but come on! Who are we kidding here? If every you needed proof that the votes on American Idol aren't fixed, just look at how they've responded to Season 5. Almost every effort has been made to minimize winner Taylor Hicks' involvement with the show, other than begrudgingly admitting he won the title. And as for Chris Daughtry, they've practically given him the honorary title of "your Fifth American Idol!" They sure would like to take all the credit for his album and success since the show.

It took them a few years to figure out how to make sure this never happens again, and the new rule is it. One time in a season the judges can save an eliminated contestant from America's vote. Instead no one goes home, and two go the next week. I think the idea is solid, but the execution creates more emotional chaos with each eliminated contestant. Now you can get your heart broken by Ryan, raise your hopes again with your performance and then get dashed again by the judges. Two, count them, two shattered dreams in each show!

American Idol: My fantasy top ten

by Debra McDuffee, posted May 9th 2008 10:03AM
David Cook from American IdolWatching American Idol this season, I've come to the not-so-astute realization that we can't all like everyone who makes it to the top ten each season. There are different musical styles, personalities and, let's face it, some pretty crappy singers who make it through.

So I've begun to fantasize about an all-star AI top ten. Imagine if everyone that you really liked from the top ten of all the past seasons of AI were in the top ten together. I know the top ten can't be all the handsome rocker men I so adore, but it can be a good mix of good music, memorable personalities, and lasting talent.

If memory serves me correctly (and we all know it probably doesn't), these are the contestants that I'd pick, in no particular order:

1. Brooke White, season seven, fifth place
No, I'm not a sucker for a crier. I simply love her singer/songwriter style, something we really haven't ever seen in Idol and something I hope we see more of. When AI started, it was the boy-band voice, then it moved to the rockers; hopefully Brooke has started a new force of no-nonsense talent coming through.

Daughtry told 'Feels Like Tonight' feels like very familiar - VIDEO

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 11th 2008 1:20PM
DaughtryUh-oh. Just keeping it real, you didn't really bring anything of your own to "Feels Like Tonight." In fact, it sounded like like you just took The Asphalts' "Tonight." Okay, it didn't go down like that, but The Asphalts have brought allegations of plagiarism against Daughtry. They even put together a snazzy video that samples both Daughtry's "Feels Like Tonight" and their own "Tonight" so you can judge for yourself.

Unfortunately for Daughtry, Chris apparently climbed in bed with a guy by the name of Dr. Luke who wrote "Feels Like Tonight." This, even though Luke has already settled in a similar case brought against him and Avril Lavigne for her single "Girlfriend," which bore a striking resemblance to a band called the Rubinoos' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend." You know how sometimes you get a tune stuck in your head and you can't get it out? Apparently Dr. Luke has that problem a lot. Only he writes it down and makes "new" songs out of it.

Top Ten toughest bald guys on TV -- another view

by Debra McDuffee, posted Apr 5th 2008 1:00PM
keith marsThis is going to be fun.

When I first saw Paul's post about the Ten toughest Bald guys on TV, I immediately brainstormed who I thought they'd be before I read the post. Boy, was I surprised, not only at some of Paul's choices, but more importantly, his omissions. I was inspired enough to write my own list.

For some of my list, I agree with Paul.

1. Hawk (Spenser for Hire)
I was so glad to see Hawk on Paul's list, as he was one of the first ones to come to mind. However, I would not agree that he is a stereotype. He was deep and sensitive, loyal and protective, none of which fit the stereotype of bad ass for me. Although am I biased because I read the books, which perhaps have Hawk as a far more developed character than the series did?

2. Jean-Luc Picard (Star Trek :TNG)
Total agreement here. Again, not a stereotype. His great leadership skills helped to make him the tough guy that he is.

Chris Cornell responds to Idol (non)controversy

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 1st 2008 1:08PM
Chris CornellSo it looks like Chris Cornell has responded to the "controversy" about David Cook's performance of "Billie Jean" last week on American Idol. While Ryan Seacrest clearly introduced him by indicating he was doing Chris Cornell's version, that introduction doesn't seem to have been enough. The incident is similar to one during Season Five when Chris Daughtry performed Live's arrangement of Johnny Cash's classic "I Walk the Line." Then, as now, the judge's didn't seem to realize that the contestants were singing other artists arrangements of the pieces, instead praising their bravery and originality.

And they weren't the only ones. Even in my review of the episode I clearly stated that it was Chris Cornell's arrangement, and yet I still got comments from people who thought David was trying to pull one over on America by pretending it was his own work. Cornell didn't see the episode as he was returning from abroad, but he was immediately deluged with emails blasting the judges for praising Cook's brave 'arrangement.'

Idol Gives Back 2007It's a no-brainer really. And more importantly it brought in killer ratings for FOX (did I say that already)! Of course they're going to do it again this year, and now according to Variety, they've set the date for "Idol Gives Back 2008." April 9, 8/7c the two-hour star-studded extravaganza will once again bombard our retinas.

Idol dominates AMAs with two triple-crown winners

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 19th 2007 3:01PM

Jimmy Kimmel Hosts 2007 AMAsWith Daughtry, fronted by American Idol alumnus Chris Daughtry, and former Idol winner Carrie Underwood each taking home three trophies at this year's American Music Awards (AMAs), it's clear that the music landscape continues to be shaped by the dominant FOX reality competition. Daughtry, who didn't win his season of AI but has gone on to more commercial success than any of his season's compatriots thus far, picked up awards for favorite pop-rock album, breakthrough album and adult contemporary artist for his band's self-titled debut Daughtry. While Daughtry acknowledged the show's role in his success, as reported on AOL.com, he insists "the show didn't make me who I am. It just gave me a chance to show everybody else who I am."

Underwood, meanwhile, continued her award show success with trophies for favorite female country artist, country album (for Some Hearts) and the T-Mobile text-in award. For the first time in its 35 year history, winners this year were chosen by online voting. With the AMAs being essentially a "popularity contest" it should come as no surprise that two of the most popular artists ever on one of televisions most popular television shows ever would have a good showing.

Will Taylor Hicks sell a million albums?

by Liz Finn-Arnold, posted Mar 2nd 2007 11:16AM
Taylor HicksWith slow record sales, many critics are predicting that Taylor Hicks will be the first American Idol to fall short of selling one million albums. And that would make him the least successful Idol winner yet.

Meanwhile, last year's fourth place Idol finisher, Chris Daughtry, has already sold 1.7 million copies of his debut album.

Tom Corson, executive vice president of J Records, is optimistic Taylor will turn things around, telling the Associated Press, "It's a work in progress, and, would we have liked to sell a little bit more? Yeah. But (the album is) still gold and on its way to platinum."
