Ryan Reynolds Recalls a High-Flying, Near-Death Experience on 'Letterman' (VIDEO)

by Mike Moody, posted Jun 15th 2011 3:12AM
ryan reynoldsIt sounds like Ryan Reynolds was in need of his 'Green Lantern' power ring during a recent skydiving adventure.

The star dropped by 'The Late Show With David Letterman' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS) to talk about his penchant for jumping out of airplanes -- he's done it 13 times -- as well as that one time when his parachute didn't open.

Luckily, Reynolds was packing a reserve 'chute, but he was reluctant to pull it because, as he said, "then I'd have none left!"

Ray Romano Tells David Letterman About 'Taking a Shot to the Groin' (VIDEO)

by Catherine Lawson, posted May 27th 2011 5:02AM
Ray Romano on 'Late Show With David Letterman'Ray Romano shared an interesting theory about evolution and growing old, on 'Late Show With David Letterman' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS).

Romano told host David Letterman about how a recent game of hoops with his kid resulted in him "taking a shot to the groin."

As Letterman grimaced and the men in the audience groaned in sympathy, Romano came out with one surprising benefit to getting older. Having said that a shot in the groin is the worst pain imaginable for a man, he said that this one, well, "It didn't hurt as much."

And here's Romano's explanation why: Evolution. Yep, the 50-something actor reckons that when a guy gets hit "down there" in his 20s or 30s the ensuing agony is nature's way of telling him to be careful with his man parts because he and the species needs them.

Stephen Colbert Looks for the Bathroom Key on David Letterman's Set (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 5th 2011 4:28AM
'The Colbert Report'If you're going to be covering flooding on your television show, make sure you have an empty bladder before you begin. That's a lesson we all learned tonight on 'The Colbert Report' (Weeknights, 11:30PM ET on Comedy Central). Also, know where the bathroom key is.

Stephen Colbert stopped mid-story to announce suddenly that he needed to go to the bathroom. It was all to set up some fun sight gags, like him standing in the corner of his set, and then making his way over to the set of 'Late Show.'

He walked in during David Letterman's monologue, or at least Letterman stammering and not saying anything during it, and proceeded to go over to his desk.

David Letterman Receives the Johnny Carson Award on 'The Comedy Awards' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 11th 2011 2:04AM
Bill Murray & David Letterman, 'The Comedy Awards'In a moment that must have been poignant for him, David Letterman became the first recipient of the Johnny Carson Award for Comedic Excellence at 'The Comedy Awards' (Sun., 9PM ET on Comedy Central). That he would take home an award named for his idol, and get to do it in front of the very curtain Johnny Carson used on 'The Tonight Show' made it even more special.

But Bill Murray, who presented the award, wouldn't hand over the statue. "Yeah, that's fine. Screw around with it and bust it," he told Murray.

"Everybody knew that if you were in comedy ... the goal was to be on the Johnny Carson show," Letterman said. "I was lucky enough, I actually got to host 'The Tonight Show.' I didn't host it as long as I had hoped."

Preview: 'The Comedy Awards' on Comedy Central

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 10th 2011 10:30AM
Stpehen Colbert and Jon Stewart on 'The Comedy Awards'
People in the entertainment industry love to give each other awards... except for the folks in the world of comedy.

There could be a couple of reasons for it: Most comedians would rather make fun of awards shows than be a part of one. And with comedians being a generally self-deprecating group, self-back-patting has never been in their DNA. It's probably why there hasn't been any major comedy awards show since 2001, when the American Comedy Awards went kaput after 14 years.

But Comedy Central knows comedy should be rewarded, which is why it's giving out the first annual Comedy Awards tonight at 9PM ET (it airs on Comedy Central, Spike TV, CMT, Logo, TV Land, VH1 and Nick at Nite). Because the ceremony was taped on March 26, there are plenty of live blogs out there to tell you what to expect. Some highlights, and preview clips, after the jump.

Ben Stiller Tells David Letterman a Ghost Story (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Mar 24th 2011 3:10AM
Ben Stiller Tells David Letterman a Ghost Story"I'm aware of ghosts," Ben Stiller said on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS). This was David Letterman's response: "Wait a minute, stop right there. When you say ... you're aware of ghosts?" The host then paused, looking confused.

Yes, Ben Stiller kind of believes in ghosts. In fact, he was raised in a house in Nantucket that was supposedly haunted by the ghost of a dead baby, which came in handy when the teenage Mr. Stiller wanted to blame someone else for his own infractions. "Lose your wallet? ... Oh, the ghost baby did it. ... My dad would go, 'I smell pot.' The ghost baby [did it.]"

Letterman Tries to Convince Katie Couric She Shouldn't Leave CBS (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 23rd 2011 2:40AM
Katie Couric, 'Late Show with David Letterman'With Katie Couric's contract up soon, there is speculation that she might be looking to leave her gig as anchor of 'CBS Evening News.' David Letterman decided to get to the bottom of it when he had her on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), but Couric played it coy.

"I'm figuring out what I want to do and I'm just sort of in the process of, you know, figuring out the future," she said. She made it clear, though, that she has no contractual ties to CBS after this summer and could move on if she chose to.

So Letterman tried another tactic, by letting her know that the evening news anchor position isn't something you walk away from. He listed many of the greats that have come before her like Brokaw, Cronkite and Jennings.

Our Eight Favorite TV Davids

by Jane Murphy, posted Mar 3rd 2011 4:00PM
David DuchovnyThe name David is king on TV, or nearly. Remember 'Starsky & Hutch'? Starsky's first name was David (who knew?). 'Dave' has had its own sitcom ('Dave's World', the '90s show starring Harry Anderson), and it is a go-to name for talk (nighttime's David Letterman and David Susskind, 'This Week''s David Brinkley and 'Today''s founding father, Dave Garroway).

One of the biggest TV stars of the last two decades, David Duchovny, (at right) once scored an Emmy nomination playing "David Duchovny." The 'X Files' and 'Californication' star made a riotous appearance on 'The Larry Sanders Show,' playing a side of "himself" that was strangely attracted to Larry.

Let's take a look at more TV Davids, Daves and, yes, even Davys.

David Letterman Teases Donald Trump About His Weight And Hair (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 3rd 2011 2:10AM
Donald Trump, 'Late Show with David Letterman'Before Donald Trump even made it onto the stage of 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), David Letterman was laying into him about his hair. Apparently, now that Justin Bieber has switched up his hair style, his old look was picked up by Trump.

Actually, it looked oddly natural on the photo Letterman presented. This is how used to The Donald having crazy hair we are.

When Trump came out, Letterman thanked him for coming on and having such a great attitude about all the grief he gets about his hair from the host.

"You do. You just kill me on my hair," Trump agreed. So Letterman decided to switch tactics.

David Letterman Uses Paris Hilton's iPhone App to Make Her Boyfriend Jealous (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Feb 18th 2011 2:17AM
Paris Hilton's iPhone app, 'Late Show with David Letterman'Paris Hilton was on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS) to hawk her new iPhone app, but David Letterman had a better idea. After she showed him the feature that allows you to superimpose a picture of Paris Hilton onto a picture you take of yourself, he decided it would be more fun to driver her boyfriend, Cy Waits, crazy.

"I wonder what the boyfriend thinks of this shot," Letterman said of the first picture Hilton took. It had her leaning provacatively toward him while he was sporting a huge grin.

To make it even better, the producers cut to a shot of Waits off-camera, and he did look uncomfortable about the whole thing. That just egged Letterman on.

Letterman Asks Adam Sandler, 'What Is Wrong With You?' After a Lewd Joke (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Feb 9th 2011 4:47AM
Adam Sandler, 'Late Show with David Letterman'Adam Sandler took a perfectly nice conversation about visiting his mother in Florida on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS), and turned it into something crude and disgusting. It's not a surprise to fans of his particular brand of "immature" humor, but it seemed to catch David Letterman off guard.

Or at least Letterman was left with only one repeated response.

Letterman made a fairly benign statement regarding Sandler's mother's friends. "They all know what you do, right?"

Sandler responded with a joke that spiralled into a pretty odd place rather quickly. "My mother still thinks I'm a doctor," he quipped. "I never really told her. So every Thanksgiving her friends will come over and I'll give them pelvic exams."
