David Cook Describes How Music Helped Him Heal After His Brother's Death (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 28th 2011 2:45PM
David Cook performs 'The Last Goodbye' on 'Today'Winning 'American Idol' in 2008 was a dream come true for David Cook. It made him famous and drove his self-titled major-label debut to platinum status. But tragedy struck Cook's personal life in 2009, when he lost his older brother, Adam, to brain cancer. Cook said Tuesday on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) that the music helped him through the ups and downs of the past few years.

"It's everything," said Cook. "This new record, especially, was more of a therapeutic outlet than I think I envisioned when we were going into the process." Cook took a year and a half to write and record the new album, 'This Loud Morning,' which was released Tuesday. He said it allowed him to delve a little deeper into some of those personal issues and to put them into the music.

Cook also played the first single from the album, a radio-friendly rocker called 'The Last Goodbye,' which was released in April.

David Cook Closes 'American Idol' Performance Show With His Farewell Song (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 25th 2011 12:12AM
David Cook, 'American Idol'All season long, we've heard David Cook's remake of Simple Minds' 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' as the farewell song for eliminated contestants. Since this marks the final week of 'American Idol' (Tue., 8PM ET on FOX), we won't get the chance to hear it again as the winner will be crowned.

So Season 7 winner David Cook appeared with his band to close out the show by giving us a live performance of the single. On a night of country music, it was almost startling to hear his smooth rock vocals, but we quickly recovered and remembered how great he was on 'Idol.'

Behind Cook, we got a montage of memories from this 10th season of 'American Idol,' and it was bittersweet seeing some of our favorite moments passing by -- please come back next season, Jacee Badeaux!

The 'American Idol' season finale airs tomorrow night at 8PM ET on FOX.

Our Eight Favorite TV Davids

by Jane Murphy, posted Mar 3rd 2011 4:00PM
David DuchovnyThe name David is king on TV, or nearly. Remember 'Starsky & Hutch'? Starsky's first name was David (who knew?). 'Dave' has had its own sitcom ('Dave's World', the '90s show starring Harry Anderson), and it is a go-to name for talk (nighttime's David Letterman and David Susskind, 'This Week''s David Brinkley and 'Today''s founding father, Dave Garroway).

One of the biggest TV stars of the last two decades, David Duchovny, (at right) once scored an Emmy nomination playing "David Duchovny." The 'X Files' and 'Californication' star made a riotous appearance on 'The Larry Sanders Show,' playing a side of "himself" that was strangely attracted to Larry.

Let's take a look at more TV Davids, Daves and, yes, even Davys.

Where Was David Cook Among the 'American Idol' Winners?

by Andrew Scott, posted May 26th 2010 10:40PM
Departing judge Simon Cowell was supposed to be the center of attention in the 'American Idol' season 9 finale. But ironically, it was the former 'American Idol' winners who stole the show during his special farewell tribute segment, which also featured the return of former judge Paula Abdul.

In a true show-stopping moment, winners Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and Kris Allen took to the stage to sing 'Together We Are One' by Delta Goodrem, during which they were joined by a revolving door of 'Idol' finalists that included everyone from Kimberly Caldwell to Constantine Maroulis and, yes, Justin Guarini.

Noticeably absent, though, was season 7 winner David Cook -- the only 'Idol' winner who did not take part in the group performance. According to Twitter, Cook was attending a charity event for cancer in Kansas City. An official word from Cook's camp has yet to be released.

'American Idol' - 'One of 12 Voted Off' Recap

by Kona Gallagher, posted Mar 17th 2010 11:52PM
american idol top 12I don't know why, but I was thinking up until this show started that we were still losing one guy and one girl; but the days of the competition being split evenly are over. We're only losing one tonight, so one of the genders is going to be completely safe. It's hard for me to guess who's going home, though, as last night's episode was one of those nights in which I questioned what show I was watching as compared to the judges.

They, apparently, were watching some sort of star-studded tribute to The Rolling Stones, while I was watching a hot mess. The contestants seemed way over-praised, in general, while the one who wouldn't have made Mick Jagger question all of his career choices, Crystal Bowersox, was unduly criticized. It was crazy-town last night, so I'm really interested to see who America ultimately thinks should go.

'American Idol' Winner Auditions: High Notes & Humble Beginnings (VIDEO)

by AOL TV Staff, posted Jan 19th 2010 11:10AM

Having waited tables or shoveled cow poo before becoming pop stars, famous people often don't care to rehash history. But when 'American Idol' is the vehicle that launched that superstar career, it's difficult to obscure the past with the sparkle of a Grammy and the gleam of platinum records, especially when the show's audition clips are some of the most fun viral videos out there.

Former 'AI' contestants like chart toppers Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and David Cook and Broadway babes Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks once had to audition, too. Their tryouts are time capsules of raw talent that make you wonder how these artists ever wallowed in the same pool of hopefuls as William Hung, "Bikini Girl" and some of this season's worst auditions. Plus, watching Simon Cowell discredit Jordin Sparks during her audition because of her "weird smile" and "cutesy" delivery -- and knowing that he would eat his words when she won season 6 -- is priceless.

Take a look at the audition videos of all the 'American Idol's and see if you can spot the birth of a winner in each one.

David Cook and Xzibit Raise Money on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Jan 11th 2010 12:00PM
'American Idol' season 7 winner David Cook and actor/rapper Xzibit held a celebrity auction for the benefit of a 12-year-old girl battling a congenital blood disease on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.'

For Cook, the plight of the young girl resonated deeply with him given his brother's longtime struggle with brain cancer. "You know, to see somebody that you care about suffer, especially with something like cancer, that's a helpless feeling. My brother got up every day knowing that he had a brain tumor. To watch him just get eaten away was heavy," Cook said.

American Idol S8 Kansas City

(S08E02) Kona kicked off TV Squad's American Idol coverage last night, and the auditions are now in full swing. This episode found Ryan Seacrest and the judges in Kansas City, home of last year's American Idol winner David Cook. In fact, Ryan talked to David Cook's parents, who just happened to be walking down the street! Ok, not really, but they made it seem that way, which was kind of funny.

Also, included in the crowd of 11,000 people was Michael Castro, Jason Castro's brother. More on that later.
