Day Break to end early?

by Brett Love, posted Dec 6th 2006 3:24PM
taye diggsABC unveiled their new Wednesday night schedule yesterday, as Anna reported here. The big news is, of course, Lost moving to 10PM to duck American Idol and Criminal Minds. Gideon wins the Wednesday night slugfest by forfeit, I think. Crazy island adventure aside, aren't you wondering where Day Break went?

When Knights of Prosperity and In Case Of Emergency kick off on January 3rd at 9PM there will still be five more episodes of Brett Hopper's bad day. Could it be that the terrible ratings have finally caught up with the show and ABC is going to quit while they're behind? The other option is moving the show, but at this point I'm not sure the numbers will even allow them to do that.

They could stick a repeat Grey's Anatomy in any of the slots and easily get twice the audience. Added to that, there are still episodes of The Nine and Six Degrees in the can that are just as, if not more, deserving of any open slot. Day Break may be destined for the internet, and a complete series DVD set.

Day Break vs. ... One Tree Hill?

by Brett Love, posted Dec 1st 2006 4:15PM
One Tree HillAt the beginning of the season I wrote about the battle between Lost and Criminal Minds on Wednesday at 9. That has turned into quite the contest. As Lost wrapped up their fall mini-season Criminal Minds had taken the overall viewers lead, while Lost held on to the coveted 18-49 demo crown. We've also talked about the ratings train wreck that ABC's Wednesday night has become since the departure of Dancing with the Stars and Lost.

But now, things are just getting ridiculous. Any thoughts of competing with Criminal Minds, or anything on NBC or Fox, have long since passed. This week, not only did Day Break fall below 5 million viewers (what I am now considering the Mendoza line for the big networks), but the 1.8 rating the show got in the 18-49 demo was tied with One Tree Hill on the CW. Good grief, from battling over slots in the top ten to hoping that you edge out the teen drama on the CW. Ouch. That's a hell of a way to cap off your sweeps run.

It's an interesting story to follow, made all the more so by the fact that Day Break is actually a pretty good show. I didn't expect to see it develop a Lost like following, but why 12 or 13 million people have tuned out boggles me. It seems like ABC is committed to running the whole series, ratings be damned, but I guess we can stop speculating what a season two of Day Break would be like.

Day Break: What if He Can Change the Day?

by Jen Creer, posted Nov 29th 2006 11:14PM
Day Break, Andrea and Hopper(S01E04) Whoa, things are starting to change. The writers aren't giving us the fun, though, of keeping track of all of the little details of Hopper's day; he does change the cell phone batteries, but the falling plate is gone now, as is the woman who routinely gets hit by a bus without Hopper's intervention.

I still think we will see her again, though. She works for a judge; maybe she will provide some kind of important alibi for Hopper one of these days.

Screw the hiatus, bring back Lost now

by Brett Love, posted Nov 24th 2006 4:30PM
lostThere has been much chatter about ABC's somewhat unconventional scheduling of Lost this season. In an effort to avoid a repeat filled schedule, they have split the season into two parts, handing off the time slot to Day Break for three months in the middle. While they will tell you it was because of outcry from the fans, the cynic in me thinks that the fact that Lost doesn't repeat well had something to do with it.

Either way, it's not working. Rather, it's really not working. Day Break premiered with a somewhat disappointing 11 million viewers, despite having the Dancing with the Stars finale drop 27 million sets of eyeballs on their doorstep. But 11 million sounds just grand compared to this week. With the dancing shoes stowed away for the foreseeable future, Captain Kirk's Show Me The Money is delivering just under 8 million viewers as the lead in. And Wednesday, Day Break only managed to hang on to 5.12 million of them. 5 million? The worst repeat of Lost would never approach 5 million viewers.

Day Break: What If He Lets Her Go?

by Jen Creer, posted Nov 23rd 2006 7:31AM
Daybreak(S01E03) Well, the good news is that Hopper is healing. The bad news is that his life still sucks. Last week, I had to agree with commenter Mrs. Eldubya, who said basically that the show wasn't as good as she had expected, but it was still worth tuning in for. Well, this week? The show got better.

This show hinges on the details-- and boy, do they get that right. Hopper is talking to his partner, Andrea, and she says, "How do you know I won't just take this into them?" (The Internal Affairs people who have offered her a deal if she brings in Hopper-- this being the hourglass that was in the package). The scene briefly shifts to her taking a bullet in a previous incarnation of the day in which she took a bullet for him so he could get away.

Nine TV guys make People's 'Sexiest' list

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 17th 2006 8:28AM
john krasinskiIt's Friday. Let's talk about hot guys.

Nine out of 15 male actors on People magazine's list of Sexiest Men are on television. The one I'm most excited about seeing on the list is John Krasinski, of The Office. He has that sweet guy thing going on, whereas some of the finalists are just smoldering sexpots (see: Jake Gyllenhaal).

Also in the Top 15 Sexiest: Taye Diggs (Day Break), Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy), Omar Epps (House), Josh Duhamel (Las Vegas), Enrique Murciano (Without a Trace), Rodrigo Santoro (Lost), Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty) and John Cho (The Singles Table- NBC midseason).

Who's missing from this list?

Day Break: Pilot / What If They Run (series premiere)

by Jen Creer, posted Nov 16th 2006 6:46AM
Day Break(S01E01 / S01E02) Anna Johns called Day Break "Groundhog Day meets Diehard." Before I read that, I was thinking Groundhog Day meets 24, because we are talking about 24 hours in a man's day that are very important -- essential, even. I would even throw some Traffic and Crash into the mix-- maybe because of the cinematography and direction. I admit that I had preconceived notions going into this because I have seen Groundhog Day so many times.

ABC to pacifiy Lost fans during long break

by Anna Johns, posted Nov 15th 2006 6:29PM
lostLost is over until February 7th. Tonight, ABC is filling Lost's time slot with a new series, Day Break. (Think: Groundhog Day meets Die Hard) To keep Lost fans murmuring about the show, the network plans to air teasers from next year's episodes during the entire run of Day Break. But, you don't have to watch Day Break because the 30-second clips will also be available on ABC's Lost webpage every Thursday... and probably all over the internet immediately after they air. The network is also keeping the first six episodes of Lost available on its website for refreshers or in case you want to watch that Sawyer/Kate sex scene again. And to keep fans from bitching about the big, fat hiatus, the network has also started up its own Lost wiki, which it wants fans to create the content.

Sweeps not as important anymore?

by Brett Love, posted Nov 11th 2006 3:04PM

LostWith the big Lost mini-season finale already out of the way and the Dancing with the Stars finals next week, I'm left wondering just what ABC is up to. With half of sweeps left to go they are going to be without three of the top ten shows on TV. That seems to fly in the face of traditional scheduling. Wouldn't it have made more sense to throw in a break for DWTS to push it two weeks later? And either extend the Lost mini-season or start it so the, self proclaimed, "Best Episode Of The Year" would end sweeps?

I haven't seen Day Break yet, but I've heard mixed reactions. Whichever way it goes, I think it's reasonable to expect it to fall somewhere short of Lost's performance. If they are counting on Lost fans to tune in just to catch the 30 second nuggets that they will be parceling out, I think they are in for a big YouTube flavored surprise. Add to that the fact that the Wednesday at 9 slot is going to be much tougher for Day Break than it was for Lost. They aren't going to have the luxury of a top 5 show as a lead in, but they'll still have to deal with the increasingly popular Criminal Minds. Show Me The Money should premiere with good numbers, just for the shatnerian curiosity factor, but will it match DWTS? It's all very curious.

ABC sets Lost's return, pulls Extreme Makeover

by Anna Johns, posted Oct 26th 2006 1:34PM
lostAs you may recall, Lost is doing a funky scheduling thing this season where we get to see six new episodes in a row (last night's was number four) and then it goes on a long break before showing the rest of the season. After episode six on November 8th, Lost's time slot will be filled by the new drama, Day Break. Lost will return February 7th and will have new episodes every week through mid-May.

In other scheduling news, a new episode of the original Extreme Makeover was on last Friday. Did anybody watch it? Apparently not, because ABC pulled the rest of the episodes in favor of reruns of Grey's Anatomy in the 8 pm time slot.

Keith's Fall TV Schedule

by Keith McDuffee, posted Sep 19th 2006 10:29AM
veronica marsWhen we all decided to post what we'd be watching this fall, I originally thought my list wouldn't be so lengthy. Boy, was I wrong. How the hell am I supposed to keep up with this schedule? I'd better put some cooling fans on my DVRs, because they're going in overtime.

Sunday
Sunday afternoon football, though since I'm a devoted Patriots fan, it's pretty much the only game I'll turn to. Sunday night: Dexter -- I've caught the first three episodes of this show, and it's GOOD. This is going to be a sure hit. I'll also catch Sopranos and Entourage when they come back and will record Family Guy. I may record Desperate Housewives out of curiosity, since I've watched it since day one, but I'm not the one covering it this season.
A surprisingly busy night.

And now, here is your complete list of Fall 2006 premiere dates

by Richard Keller, posted Aug 10th 2006 1:39PM

FOX's Bones to premiere on August 30thWarm up the DVR, because the beginning of the new fall television season is going to be here sooner than you think. In a trend that has continued for several years now, thanks in part to FOX's schedule of football games and broadcast of baseball's World Series, the fall television season actually begins in late August rather than right after the Emmy Awards (which are being held on August 27th). This year is no exception.

As mentioned back in June, FOX will roll out some its more popular shows this month, starting with the second season of Prison Break starting on August 21st. In fact, out of the 15 shows that will air before the 'official' start of the season on September 18th, 12 of them are on FOX. This includes the season premieres of Bones (August 30th), House (September 5th) and the animated shows The Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad (September 10th).

Premiere pandemonium arrives in mid-September. Fifty-three series, new and old, will premiere between September 18th until October 5th. The latest series to premiere in the actual fall season will be ABC's Day Break, which will take its bow on November 15th. A complete list of shows and their airdates can be found below (most dates obtained through StarPulse).

Just as Anna, Joel and I wrapped up our previews for most of ABC's new shows for this Fall, a latecomer arrives at the TV Squad offices: Day Break. And while the same rules apply, where we're not really supposed to "review" the episode we were given (hence the "NOT FOR REVIEW" notice with the DVD), there's really nothing stopping us from giving you the preview lowdown.
