day break
New TV on DVD releases this week
Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow. This might not be the biggest DVD release day in history, but it's certainly one of the business. There's something for everyone this week, including a bunch of "Fan Favorites" DVDs for various sitcoms, including NewsRadio, All in the Family, and I Dream of Jeannie. That's a neat idea, though I wonder, if you're a big fan, wouldn't you already have the DVDs?
Oh, and remember Day Break, the ABC mystery series from a couple of years ago? You can get the Complete Series. I don't think I ever saw the end of that show. You can watch it on SlashControl, so maybe I'll start there before buying the set.

- Ax Men - Season 2

Sci-fi TV show concepts you never saw
Okay, here's a good one found via Pop Candy...someone listed six of the best Sci Fi television shows that you never saw (meaning that they lasted only a season or less). If a young Julie Newmar is a robot, is she the first fem-bot? I suppose in many ways she's a sex toy ahead of her time.
I like the concepts behind Alternative 3 (a documentary about a group of people who have abandoned the planet Earth as a lost cause) and The Ultimate Imposter (an agent with a chip in his head to give him a different personality each week). I see elements of the latter in Joss Whedon's new series Dollhouse.

Looking at the 2006 upfronts with 20/20 hindsight
We're about a week away from the upfronts, the annual back-patting festivals the broadcast networks hold to introduce their new fall schedules. TV Squad will be ready, providing you, the loyal reader, with coverage of who's in, who's out, and what's new on the five broadcast networks (yes, I'm counting the CW as a full broadcast network, even though it's looking like it'll air mostly reality shows next year). So, it seems to be a good time to look back at our coverage of last year's upfronts, to see what was considered news, which shows became hits, which shows never aired, and which pilots looked promising but mostly ended up causing each network piles of money, bad press, and misery.
Click on the network name to see to our coverage of that network's 2006 upfront:
Grey's spinoff update: Taye Diggs to star with Walsh
More details are coming out about the forthcoming Grey's Anatomy spinoff, which will be introduced in a two-hour episode of Grey's this May. Joining Kate Walsh on the show will be none other than Taye Diggs, who last graced our screens on the short-lived ABC serialized show Day Break.According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two-hour spinoff episode will have Walsh's character of Dr. Addison Montgomery contemplating leaving Seattle Grace Hospital. If the spinoff gets picked up, the takes the new job. If it doesn't, she'll turn down the job and return to SGH. No word on what role Diggs will play.
Perhaps to make up for the quick demise of Day Break, ABC has extended its development contract with Diggs' production company for another two years.
Good news for Day Break fans
Before you go jumping for joy Day Break is not returning to the ABC schedule. So, please sit down on the couch before you hurt yourself!. The good news we are talking about is that previously aired episodes, as well as three new ones, will be streaming from ABC.com very soon.
I know you're scratching your head on this one, since you already thought that Day Break was already streaming on that site. Well, not quite. They were supposed to air on the website but never showed up. The excuse reason given was that there were online music right issues that needed to be resolved. Shortly after that news the entire Day Break site was taken down, which ticked off fans even more.
Now, according to ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson, Day Break episodes will begin streaming on the network's website starting on Monday, January 29th and continue each Monday afterward until all 13 episodes are released online. The series finale is scheduled to be available on February 19th. Whether or not old episodes of the show will be pulled to make way for new ones is unknown at this time.
Remaining Day Break episodes will be shown online
People have been wondering for some time now just what ABC is going to do with all those extra Day Break episodes that they paid for. All traces of the show disappeared from their website recently, leading many to believe that DVD was the only option for getting to the rest of the story. We might not have to wait that long though. As Joel reported yesterday, ABC entertainment president Stephen McPherson announced that remaining episodes will be available online by the end of February. There weren't any details about how the release is going to go. I would prefer just dumping them all on the site for a marathon viewing, but at this point even one a week would be just fine. They are sticking to the 'music clearance' issue as the reason for the delay. And of course, this comes with all the foibles usually associated with TV on the internet. But hey, it's better than nothing.

ABC pres admits there were too many serials - TCA Report
The first session of yesterday's ABC presentation started bright and early at 9 AM with a Q&A with network president Steve McPherson. He was cheekily introduced with a video showing the rehearsals of a "new cast member" of Dancing with the Stars. It turned out to be McPherson, at a scene that looked like it came from either a previous press tour or an upfront presentation. Everyone laughed but me, mainly because I wasn't grizzled enough of a TV veteran to get the inside joke.Anyway, some of the information he gave at the Q&A after the jump.
Best and Worst of 2006: Brett's List
2006 was a good year for television, but then all years are good years for television. Nostalgia often makes us think that things were better way back when, but I wouldn't trade my hundreds of channels of digital cable for the three networks on the rabbit ears for anything. Even the somewhat obscure channels like The-N (South of Nowhere), GSN (High Stakes Poker), and IFC (Henry Rollins Show) manage to bring some good stuff to the table. Of course, things are never all rosey, but we'll get to that later. First, some of the best things about TV this past year.NBC's handling of Studio 60 and Friday Night Lights - Many of us, myself included, are quick to jump on the networks when they dump a show just a few episodes in. So it's worth acknowledging that the network has been more than patient with these two shows. Many shows that have come before them have been blown right off the schedule for generating similar ratings. Studio 60 kicked off their season with ratings that declined week after week and, honestly, Friday Night Lights just never had any ratings to begin with. I really hope their patience pays off and audiences find these shows. They both deserve to see a second season.
Top TV Stories of 2006: More TV on the Internet
(Part 3 of 5) In our review of the top television stories of 2005 former TV Squad scribe Ryan J. Budke said this about TV on the Internet, "If you think that 2005 was big, wait 'til 2006 -- you ain't seen nothing yet." Boy howdy, was he correct! If 2005 was the year that TV came to the Internet, then 2006 was the year that it bought a home, settled in, and joined the local PTA. From pilots and first-run episodes to classic and canceled shows, television and the World Wide Web took one step closer to being officially married in 2006. And, we have one site on the Internet to thank for this explosion . . .
YouTube.
Okay, maybe YouTube isn't the only site we should be thanking. I mean, according to Ryan, the networks realized back in 2005 that this newfangled technology called the Internet wasn't going away any time soon, so they began to utilize it. However, it was the utterly huge popularity of YouTube that pushed the networks into getting their collective acts together to get their content onto the Web.
Curious changes for ABC's video site
I've been keeping an eye on the ABC episode streaming site. Of all of the network streaming solutions, theirs is the one that I like the best. And they have made some changes, so if you haven't checked it out yet, there are some new goodies. As of now, you can watch all the episodes from the current season for Ugly Betty, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Brothers And Sisters, and What About Brian. Those last two are recent additions. There are also four episodes of both Six Degrees and The Nine, but no word on when, or if, more are coming. Finally, the first episode of ABC Family's Lincoln Heights is also available.Day Break: What if ABC is asleep at the wheel?
A lot of people have been asking what is to become of Day Break now that ABC has pulled it from the air. The word was that the remaining episodes were to be shown on the network's video site. If you were wondering why ABC hasn't made good on putting the new Day Break episodes up yet, TV Guide has an answer. But be warned, it's a pretty stupid one. According to an ABC rep, there are "unforeseen music clearance issues." As John McEnroe would say, "You cannot be serious." I could understand the holdup with something like the WKRP DVD set because of music clearance issues. When Johnny and Venus were spinning records, nobody had dreamed of what the home video market would become. But given the fact that ABC has been putting a whole mess of their shows, including Day Break, online, how were these issues unforeseen? That's like your car breaking down because of unforeseen cars burn gas issues.
I have no idea what ABC is doing at this point. If the best they have to offer instead of Day Break is repeats of According to Jim and George Lopez, what's the point? The slight gain in ratings still landed them in fourth place, and isn't worth the ill will they are garnering from viewers.
Day Break: What If Nobody Watched?
Sadly, that's the case over at ABC. Try as they might, and for reasons I don't quite get, people just don't want to watch this show. I've posted about the slide in the ratings before, and it continued this week. After garnering their lowest 18-49 numbers yet, ABC has pulled the show, with plans for the remaining episodes to be shown on ABC.com. Or, on DVD for those of you that are going to be screwed by that whole geography thing. To add insult to injury, the Wednesday schedule will be filled with repeats of George Lopez and According to Jim until the new schedule starts in January. I think this has to signal a change at the networks. The big serial drama experiment is now officially a failure. With Surface and Invasion failing to get a second season, and now Smith, Kidnapped, The Nine, Six Degrees, and Day Break all failing to finish one, I think we can look for the networks to try something different next season. And hey, if Diggs really wants to be on a hit show, they're still casting for the next Dancing with the Stars, right?... Too soon?
Day Break: What If They Find Him?
(S01E06) Unlike 24, which is another fine, fast-paced, thrilling drama, Day Break has a good sense of humor. I am still laughing about seeing Damien, Hopper, and Damien's driver in the Skinheads' van listening to I love how the show is editing sequences now, so that instead of seeing every detail, we see what is relevant. On the other hand, if we miss something (my husband ran out to get our son from swim practice) they will show you enough of what has happened that you can pick it up again pretty easily.
Day Break: What If They're Stuck?
(S01E05) I am so hooked on this show! This was the best episode yet. I was an English major, so the quality of a show's writing is a major component in how well I like a show. The writing on this show is unexpectedly good. Well, by that I mean only that I wasn't expecting it to be this good.
