Why Paula Abdul Gives Stars to Everyone on 'Live to Dance'

by Michael Maloney, posted Jan 13th 2011 11:00AM
Paula Abdul'Live to Dance,' the "feel good" dance show headlined by lead panelist Paula Abdul, has everything a reality competition series needs to succeed -- colorful characters, lively performances, a trio of judges, a personable host and eliminations.

But can the CBS program, which airs Wednesdays at 8PM ET, now in its second week, succeed without "showmances," bickering judges, paddles with the number "3" on them, big red "X's" and other staples that we've come to expect on similar programs?

Abdul is counting on it.

The former 'American Idol' judge, who sat next to Simon Cowell for years as the Brit brutally told aspiring singers that they sucked exactly what he felt, told TV Squad she's taking a softer approach with 'Live to Dance' contestants.

Fox Boss Endorses Cheryl Cole as 'X Factor' Judge, Despite her Accent

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jan 13th 2011 6:55AM
Cheryl ColeAlthough the US version of 'The X Factor' won't hit US TV screens until the fall, Simon Cowell and Fox have been have been building as much pre-show buzz as possible. The lastest nugget of news is that UK judge, and all-around proud Newcastle girl, Cheryl Cole, may be moving stateside as part of the new show.

According to The Daily Mail, Fox entertainment chairman (and fellow Brit) Peter Rice told reporters that although the final choice would be up to head honcho Simon Cowell, Cole's "proved that she's a terrific judge. ... She has wonderful chemistry with Simon."

Sources in the UK had suggested that Cheryl's strong, regional "Geordie" accent would be an obstacle to success in the US, but Rice didn't mention it as an issue.

However, despite rumors that Cole's already been handed a deal worth around $5 million to appear on the show, and that her "close friend," 'DWTS' dancer Derek Hough, has bought a lavish LA apartment for them to share, Rice hinted that she's not a shoo-in for the job just yet: "I think Simon is still meeting and trying to find the right mixture."

Kathy Griffin Calls Bristol Palin Fat, Is Booed by a Crowd of U.S. Soldiers (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 6th 2010 8:21AM
Kathy Griffin Calls Bristol Palin Fat, Is Booed by a Crowd of U.S. Soldiers"Let's talk about 'Dancing With the Stars'!" comedienne Kathy Griffin yelled to the crowd. Oh, can we? What shall we discuss? How Carrie Ann Inaba is of mixed Japanese, Chinese and Irish ancestry? Do we want to talk about Derek Hough's record third win on the show? Should we gab about Florence Henderson's 'Brady Bunch'-themed tango? Or are we ... going to end up talking about Bristol Palin again?

"We got two words," Griffin continued. "BRISTOL ... PALIN." Ah. We see. Kathy was performing in front of a huge crowd of soldiers for 'VH1 Divas: Salute the Troops.' (Sun., 9PM ET on VH1). But as soon as she mentioned the dreaded words "Bristol Palin," the boos started rolling in from the troops. Wait. What are we booing again? Bristol? Kathy's sailor outfit? ... Kathy's comedy routine?

It turned out that the troops were jeering Ms. Griffin's routine. "You're gonna like this," she continued gamely. "[Bristol is] the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight. ... She gained like 30 pounds a week. I swear to God, it was fantastic -- she's like the white 'Precious.'"

by Michael Maloney, posted Nov 24th 2010 10:00AM

Nobody -- not even the legion of fans who were keeping Bristol Palin in the competition -- puts Baby in the corner!

Jennifer Grey, who became America's sweetheart back in 1987 as teenager Baby in the film 'Dirty Dancing,' was crowned the season 11 champion of 'Dancing With the Stars' last night.

After the finale, TV Squad spoke to the winner and runners-up Kyle Massey and Bristol Palin; their respective pro partners, Derek Hough, Lacey Schwimmer and Mark Ballas; as well as returning contestants about the rollercoaster that was season 11.

Jimmy Kimmel Congratulates 'DWTS' Winner Jennifer Grey and Pranks Her About Sarah Palin's 'Revenge' (VIDEO)

Jimmy Kimmel Congratulates 'DWTS' Winner Jennifer Grey and Pranks Her About Sarah Palin's 'Revenge'Well, they had the time of their lives ... and now it's all over -- and they're the champions. Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough won the 'Dancing With the Stars' finale tonight. As part of their victory, they got a trophy and some money. But they also got to appear on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (weeknights, 12AM ET on ABC). That's kind of a prize too -- we guess. Except that Jimmy Kimmel used the interview to give Jennifer a fake scare about Sarah Palin.

After offering his congratulations, Jimmy read a supposed Twitter message from Ms. Palin: "I smell something fishy. Shame on you, ABC!" The host paused to let this sink in. "How do you react to that?" he asked Ms. Grey. Jennifer responded with confusion and a nervous giggle. " ... Fascinating," she said. But it was lies, all lies!

In reality, Sarah Palin sent a congratulatory message soon after the show ended. (Though by "Tweeting" so quickly, she may have accidentally spoiled the result for some West Coast viewers.) At any rate, Kimmel quickly revealed his little prank. "Oh, Jimmy -- you're so cute," Jennifer said.

On the 'DWTS' Scene: Who Will Triumph in the 'Dancing With the Stars' Finale'?

by Michael Maloney, posted Nov 23rd 2010 10:10AM

They still have a few more dances to complete before the season 11 mirrorball trophy is handed out on 'Dancing With the Stars,' but the three finalist pairs have performed their highly anticipated freestyle routines.

Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough paid homage in their freestyle to a song ('Do You Love Me?') from 'Dirty Dancing,' the classic film from 1987 which Grey starred in opposite the late Patrick Swayze.

Teen activist Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas danced to a tune ('Cell Block Tango') from 'Chicago,' while Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer did a hip hop-inspired freestyle to the '69 Boyz' song 'Tootsee Roll.'

Jennifer Grey Cements Place as 'Dancing' Favorite With Two Perfect Scores (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 23rd 2010 12:38AM
Jennifer Grey Cements Place as 'Dancing' Favorite With Two Perfect ScoresThere were questions to be answered on 'Dancing With the Stars' (Mon., 8PM ET on ABC). Questions like: Would Jennifer and Derek remain the front-runners? Would Bristol Palin continue her improbable march to the finals? Would the ghost of Brandy haunt the studio, 'Phantom of the Opera'-style, after her bizarre elimination last week?

And tonight's show raised an additional question... what was the deal with that watermelon?

We'll get to the watermelon in a second. The theme for the show was "Redemption/Freestyle." Each pair had to re-do an older dance, followed by a routine of their choice. In both cases, Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough knocked it out of the park.

On the 'DWTS' Scene: Brandy Is 'Numb' Over Her Shocking Exit

by Michael Maloney, posted Nov 17th 2010 11:00AM
Mark Ballas, Bristol Palin, Brooke Burke, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Brandy NorwoodSeason 11 of 'Dancing With the Stars' has had more than its share of shocking exits, but none more than Brandy Norwood and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy being sent home on last night's results show.

Many predicted that the singer would advance to the finals, but her surprise departure means that teen activist Bristol Palin, who not only entered the contest with no dance or performing experience but also scored consistently low with the judges, is going to the final round along with actress Jennifer Grey and actor Kyle Massey.

The three finalist duos walked the post-show press line, understandably enthusiastic over their victories, but members of the press had one question on their minds: How has Palin managed to make it to the finals?

"I've known that I've worked hard to get to where I am now," Palin said. "I definitely feel like I'm one of the most improved dancers on the show."

On the 'DWTS' Scene: Kurt Warner Jokes About His 'Unfair' Exit

by Michael Maloney, posted Nov 10th 2010 9:00AM
Kurt Warner and Anna TrebunskayaKurt Warner earned both high scores and high praise from the judges on Monday night's 'Dancing With the Stars' performance show, but he and pro partner Anna Trebunskaya were sent packing on Tuesday's results program. The couple failed to receive enough viewer votes to take them to next week's semi-finals.

The former pro football player's departure means the four semi-finalists of 'DWTS'' season 11 will be singer Brandy Norwood, actor Kyle Massey, actress Jennifer Grey and teen activist Bristol Palin.

"Gosh, it was unfair," Warner said of his exit to reporters with faux outrage on the post show press line.

On a serious note, he added, "We all think it's unfair when we get kicked off the show. We felt for a long time that we should have gotten better scores than we did so, yes, you're disappointed when [this happens.] I'm just glad it's me and not one of the other guys [who's going home.] I don't want anyone to have to go."

'Dancing With the Stars': An Instant Classic, Performed to a 'Foreign' Song (VIDEO)

'Dancing With the Stars': An Instant Classic, Performed to a 'Foreign' SongA new week and a new injury led to ... another surprising result on 'Dancing With the Stars' (Mon., 8PM ET on ABC).

[Warning: Spoiler alert.]

Tonight's quarterfinal 'DWTS' episode featured a twist -- the "INSTANT DANCE." This meant the players did a regular routine, plus an "instant" routine. For the instant section, the couples didn't know what song they would be dancing to, until the second they stepped onto the ballroom floor.

The "instant" concept would have been hard enough, but contestant Jennifer Grey also suffered her third injury of the season. Ms. Grey was already coping with an old neck injury, plus a pinched nerve in her foot. Now, she had to deal with tendinitis in her knees. Jeez. Could anything else possibly go wrong for her?

'Dancing With the Stars' -- Can an Injured Star Make a Comeback? (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 2nd 2010 5:04AM
'Dancing With the Stars' -- Can an Injured Star Make a Comeback? We had comebacks galore on tonight's 'Dancing With the Stars' (Mon., 8PM ET on ABC). But would a player who was battling injures make it all the way back?

[Warning: Spoiler alert.]

Early this season, Jennifer Grey was the 'DWTS' front runner. Then, the actress was derailed by nagging physical problems. She suffered a pinched nerve in her foot, and reactivated an old neck injury. Jennifer has a metal plate in her neck, dating back to a 1987 car accident involving her then-boyfriend Matthew Broderick. She has been warned that competing on the show could cause further damage.

Last week, Grey found herself in the bottom two, facing elimination along with Audrina Patridge. The actress spent much of this week's rehearsal time weeping in frustration. Though Jennifer looks many years younger, she's actually 50 years old. And she's worried that her body can't handle the stress of dancing anymore.

On the 'DWTS' Scene: How Did Bristol Palin Turn It Around?

by Michael Maloney, posted Oct 26th 2010 10:55AM
Bristol Palin, Mark BallasA series of surprises on 'Dancing With the Stars' could leave Bristol Palin on the show's ballot until November.

For starters, the teen activist and partner Mark Ballas earned their highest score yet with a 23 for their tango Monday night. They also picked up an additional 4 points during a group competition, which gives them a 5 point lead over the show's bottom-scoring couple.

"I realized if I wasn't going to go all out this week, that I'd be going home," Palin told TV Squad after the show's taping. "So I put everything I had into this dance and worked my butt off! Messing up last week could have destroyed me or given me more motivation and it did [the latter.]"

'DWTS' Performers Help Out on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (VIDEO)

'DWTS' Performers Create a Flash Mob on 'Extreme Makeover'It's time to move to the groove on 'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC). The 'Makeover' crew visited Neenah, Wisconsin -- where they helped out Rhex Arboleda and his family.

Rhex Arboleda and his wife were living in a tiny house with their five children. Rhex is a hometown hero -- despite his tough circumstances, he created a local program called "Move to the Groove," to help fight childhood obesity.

So it was appropriate that 'Dancing With the Stars' cast members showed up to help out. Derek Hough even insisted on pitching in with the construction work during the week-long "build."

'Dancing With the Stars': It's 'Story Night,' As a New Couple Takes the Lead (VIDEO)

'Dancing With the Stars': It's 'Storytime,' As a New Couple Takes the LeadIt's Story Night once again on 'Dancing With the Stars' (Mon., 8PM ET on ABC). The return of this theme meant that each couple's performance had to tell a tale ... in musical form. Last season's Story Night brought us the horrifying spectacle of Kate Gosselin dancing to 'Paparazzi' -- which was a notable train-wreck ... although it did give us this really awesome parody. But that's all in the past now. What would tonight bring for our contestants?

[Warning: Spoiler alert.]

Front-runners Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough did well, as always, getting a 24 out of 30. But the real star of the night was Audrina Patridge, who wowed the audience with her rendition of the waltz. Patridge and Tony Dovolani's dance "story" involved a tribute to fallen American soliders and their families. While the "story" section was a little mystifying -- it involved the Smoke Monster from 'Lost,' for some reason -- the dance itself was extremely moving.
