by Jean Bentley, posted Jul 11th 2011 10:00PM
HGTV Design StarOn Monday's premiere of the sixth season of HGTV's 'Design Star,' the first challenge saw the designers pair up to decorate rooms in a ginormous New York apartment. It yielded some excellent results -- and more than a few disasters.

Most importantly, we got to know the 12 finalists, who range from a Type-A former newscaster to a criminologist.

After the jump, read my first impressions of the contestants and share your own in the comments.

HGTV's 'Design Star': Judges Tease 5 Things to Know About the New Season

by Jean Bentley, posted Jul 11th 2011 3:00PM
HGTV Design Star judgesAfter five seasons, the formula for HGTV's 'Design Star' could get a little stale. Could being the operative word -- thank goodness it didn't!

On tonight's Season 6 premiere (9PM ET on HGTV), you'll notice a few show shake-ups -- including a move to Monday nights -- before meeting a new crop of 12 ultra-talented and very diverse designers, including a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader/breast cancer survivor and a five-time Emmy-winning New York TV news reporter.

The judging panel will look the same -- HGTV mainstays Genevieve Gorder, Candice Olson and Vern Yip are back -- but 'Design Star' has a brand new host and a weekly design mentor who happens to have a very familiar face. Tanika Ray ('HGTV'd') takes over hosting duties, while David Bromstad, the very first 'Design Star' winner, returns to mentor the current crop of contestants.

Below, judges Gorder, Olson and Yip share five more things to know about the new season.

HGTV's 'Design Star' Giveaway: Win a $100 Amex Gift Card

by Maggie Furlong, posted Jul 11th 2011 9:00AM
'Design Star' is back for Season 6 (premieres Mon., July 11, 9PM ET on HGTV), with 12 talented designers vying for their own HGTV show.

We love the reality competition for the innovative designs, shopping meltdowns and the heated style debates, but we also adore the banter between judges Genevieve Gorder, Candice Olson and Vern Yip.

HGTV's Design Star
This season, they're adding a few new twists, with previous 'Design Star' winner and current host of 'Color Splash' David Bromstad acting as a mentor for the wannabe TV designers, and 'HGTV'd' host Tanika Ray doing host duty here as well.

But we've got a nice bonus for the show's fans as well: we're giving away a $100 American Express Gift Card to one lucky reader, courtesy of HGTV's 'Design Star.'

'Design Star' Winner Emily Henderson on Her New HGTV Show, 'Secrets From a Stylist'

by Kelly Woo, posted Feb 24th 2011 2:00PM
Emily Henderson Secrets From a Stylist'HGTV Design Star' season 5 winner Emily Henderson knows the secrets to styling a room, but she also knows the secret to being a good TV host: Not to act like a host at all!

When Henderson spoke to me by phone recently, she said one of the biggest lessons she took away from 'Design Star' was just to be herself. "Nobody wants to watch a real person perform," she said, "they want to see an actor perform."

In her new show, 'Secrets From a Stylist' (premiering Sat., 9PM ET), Henderson redecorates a room based on a style diagnostic of the owners. She transforms the space based on one style, then takes it to another level by layering on another -- giving the show two big reveal moments.

As she worked to fix a rug emergency, Henderson chatted about her new show. Read on to see what she said about her own personal style, her budget-conscious tips to updating a room and what to expect from the first season.

'Design Star' Winner Emily Henderson Talks Style, New Show and Her 'Glee' Connection

by Mike Moody, posted Aug 26th 2010 2:30PM
emily henderson hgtv design starEmily Henderson had one of the most compelling arcs on this season of HGTV's 'Design Star.' The Portland, Ore. native went from uncertain underdog in the season's first challenge to determined finalist in the last few episodes.

In last Sunday's finale, she pulled it all together with a stunning New York apartment space and a spunky hosting reel to win the competition and a shot at hosting her own show.

So what will Emily's new show look like? We'll get a taste when she makes over the home of 'Glee' co-creator Ian Brennan this Sunday (10PM ET) on her first HGTV special, 'Secrets from a Stylist.'

I chatted with the new Design Star earlier this week about her new show, her stressful stint as a reality TV competitor, and what it feels like to hear Vern Yip call you a winner.

'Design Star' - 'Episode One' Recap (Season Premiere)

by Mike Moody, posted Jun 14th 2010 6:20AM
design star season five hgtv
(S05E01) 'Design Star' is back with new contestants, new challenges and a more hands-on approach from its trio of shrewd and savvy judges.

Former host Clive Pearse has been edged out this season to give chief critics Vern Yip, Candice Olson and Genevieve Gorder more screen time. I'm still not completely sold on this change. I miss Pearse's breezy charm and acerbic asides, but I'm looking forward to hearing more opinion and commentary from the judges.

I'm also looking forward to seeing the contestants work in New York City, the perfect place to show off edgy, urban and upscale designs.

Why You Can't Watch Food Network and HGTV on Cablevision

by Gary Susman, posted Jan 4th 2010 2:30PM
The price battles between TV channels and cable service providers continue. While Time Warner Cable and Fox have called a truce and reached a temporary agreement that allows TWC subscribers to keep watching 'House' and weekend football, the dispute continues between Cablevision and Scripps over fees for Food Network and HGTV, leaving 3.1 million subscribers in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut without access to Bobby Flay or 'Design Star.'

Mark Burnett to Take Over 'HGTV Design Star': How Will He Redesign It?

by Chris O'Connell, posted Dec 4th 2009 12:43PM
Mark Burnett'Survivor' producer Mark Burnett will take over the reigns at 'HGTV Design Star' from 495 Prods, the Hollywood Reporter confirms.

The British producer will be expected to "infuse [the show] with fresh perspective and innovative ideas that will serve as a blueprint for a successful fifth season," according to HGTV senior vice president of programming Freddy James.

Burnett introduced competition-based reality programming to American audiences. In addition to his work on 'Survivor,' Burnett has produced everything from 'Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader,' to 'The Apprentice' to MTV's 'Bully Beatdown.'

In 2007, his work on 'Survivor' won him an Emmy for Outstanding Non-Fiction Program (Special Class).

'Design Star,' which just wrapped its fourth season in September, is a bit of a departure from Burnett's resume. Which means he may have to spruce it up a little to compete with the intensity of his other shows.

HGTV: Antonio Ballatore's house is kind of a dump

by Mike Moody, posted Sep 16th 2009 7:03PM
anonio ballatore hgtv design starA lot of you made your feelings heard about Antonio Ballatore winning this season of Design Star by commenting on a post I wrote earlier this week. The scruffy and tattooed LA. designer has tons of fans (just check out his Facebook page), but a lot of HGTV watchers couldn't warm up to his unconventional designs and slacker dude persona.

Me? I'm a fan. The guy is obviously talented. I like his edgy designs and his laid back everyman attitude. His new show, The Antonio Project, will definitely be something different for HGTV. It won't be for everybody, but it'll be refreshing to see a guy like Antonio host a show on a cable network mostly populated by dull yuppie types.

The HGTV Web site has a preview of this Sunday's premiere of The Antonio Project. The former set designer will have to redesign his own home in five days. By the looks of his house, the network is doing Antonio a favor. The place looks like a crime scene or an abandoned strip mall. Head after the jump to see a pic.

Design Star: Will you watch the winner's new show?

by Mike Moody, posted Sep 14th 2009 9:30AM
design star, antonio, dan, hgtvSeason four of HGTV's Design Star came to an end last night with the final two designers completing the biggest challenge in the show's history. Antonio, known for his edgy designs and laid-back attitude, and Dan, the talented and sweet-natured kid of the bunch, both redesigned an entire house in only 44 hours.

Both designers were cool and confident throughout the challenge, and their final products were nothing short of stunning. These guys know their stuff, and they deserved to make it to the end of the show, beating out nine other contestants for a shot at their own series on HGTV. But there could be only one winner.
