Dexter has lost its showrunner

by Danny Gallagher, posted Dec 15th 2009 9:00AM
DexterHere comes some shocking news just as the crest of the Dexter buzz wave is starting to form.

Clyde Phillips, the show's long running showrunner, has decided that the fourth season of the show which ended Sunday will be his last.

Phillips said he made the decision during a long drive to his family's home in Connecticut and is leaving so he can spend more time with them. He described it as a "hugely difficult decision" and that he had "complicated feelings about it."

Frankly, the timing couldn't have been better. It ended on a climax that was so well done and gripping that my mind cannot even wrap itself around the possibilities of how to top it. It could, but it's giving me a headache like you would not believe.

Dexter finale rakes in more eyeballs

by Danny Gallagher, posted Dec 14th 2009 7:28PM
Dexter has topped itself again.

Last night's shocker season finale wasn't just the most watched episode in the show's history, but it was the most watched, well, anything in the Showtime network's history.

The finale (you can read my review of it here) racked up 2.6 million viewers. That topped the previous record held by the second-to-last episode of the current season of 2.1 million viewers, which at the time was the highest rated show for the network in the last 10 years.

I really feel sorry for the poor bastard who has to write the fifth season. Not only does he have to craft a plot that tops the genius of the Trinity Killer angle, but he has to top the ratings record the show has just set. And I thought I was the most sleepless writer on the face of the planet.

Review: Dexter - The Getaway (season finale)

Dexter: The Getaway
(S04E12) "How is it that I kill people and feel no regret, but disappointing Rita can make me feel like the scum of the Earth?" - Dexter Morgan

I don't care what the issue is, what topic I'm discussing, or what area of my life needs improvement. If Jennifer Carpenter, the actress who plays Debra Morgan on Dexter, has the answer for me, I'm going to follow it to a tee.

That's because she can correctly predict the emotional outcome of any situation, including the reaction I'd have to last night's Dexter finale. I should really have her sit in on my next IRS audit. Chances are if she can't help me cope with the soul crushing inevitability of my pending financial breakdown, she can curse out the auditor and leave him in a bigger sadness heap than I'll be in.

'Dexter' Season 4 Episode 11 'Hello, Dexter Morgan' Recap

Dexter: Hello, Dexter MorganWhat happened on this week's 'Dexter' season 4 episode 11, 'Hello, Dexter Morgan' -- in 100 words or less.

The jig is up! Arthur learned Dexter's true identity and came face to face with him at the police department. But not before Dexter successfully pinned the "Trinity Killer" label on trucker Stan Beaudry; then chopped him up and planted Arthur's DNA.

Christine confessed to Debra, then offed herself. Her daddy issues couldn't be fixed with a phone call. "I'm sorry you were ever born," said Arthur.

'Dexter' Season 4 Episode 10 'Lost Boys' Recap

Dexter: Lost Boys; John Lithgow as the Trinity KillerWhat happened on this week's 'Dexter' season 4 episode 10, 'Lost Boys'' -- in 100 words or less.

Just give John Lithgow the Emmy now! Never has Frankie Avalon's 'Venus' sounded creepier as when the Trinity Killer sang it to the boy he abducted. But Dexter was hot on his trail, leaving no vacant house, construction site or bomb shelter unturned.

Dexter finally caught up with him, just in time to pull the body-bagged kid, still alive, out of a wet cement hole. But dang, Arthur disappeared.

(S0402) - "You've got a family to support and people to dismember. You're spinning too many plates, Dexter." - Harry Morgan

One of the most interesting reasons to watch shows like Dexter are the ways the characters manage to wiggle their way out of complete destruction after pushing more than their fair share of luck.

But unlike shows like The Shield or The Sopranos where most of the luck pushing is done by the main character, the people behind Dexter like to spread the carelessness around. Just about everyone in this twisted tale has some skeletons in their closets, both figurative and possibly literal.
