Milton Gray talks about timing

by Adam Finley, posted Aug 8th 2006 2:58PM

porky's duck huntSome of my fellow bloggers refer to me as the "animation expert," a nice label, but I don't personally consider myself an expert on animation. I'm really just a big fan with a knack for remembering trivial things. Besides, there are a ton of great Web sites and blogs out there by people who actually work in the industry and can talk about things with an authority I just don't have. Case in point: John Kricfalusi recently posted a lengthy missive from Milton Gray on his blog in which Gray, who currently works as an animation timer on The Simpsons, talked about the importance of timing in animation and sung the praises of early animation directors, especially Bob Clampett. Gray writes about how important the hands-on approach was in those early cartoons, and about working within the confines and restrictions of modern animation. Check it out.

Smith to direct controversial episode of All of Us

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 24th 2006 1:30PM
will smithThere's an old Bloom County strip where Opus the penguin splits into two distinct personalities so his subconscious can debate itself on Nightline. That's kind of how I felt when I heard Will Smith was going to be directing an episode of his UPN sitcom All of Us for the first time. The episode will focus on a child who blurts out the "N-word" and will focus on the impact of the word, it's place in history, its significance, and etc. Now, I think debate over this subject needs to continue, because I don't think there's any easy answers. If a sitcom wants to tackle the subject, that's great. However, there's another part of me that feels, strictly from a programing standpoint, that this is an idea that has already been visited and revisited countless times by many other shows. I wonder, will this episode actually have anything new to say, or are we just going to get the same cliche statements we've already heard before? If you're curious, the episode airs this evening at 8:30 p.m. EST.

A little bit more on The Simpsons movie

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 4th 2006 12:34PM

simpsonsThey've chosen a director for the new Simpsons movie, and it's Steven Spielberg.

Wait. I'm sorry, I didn't have my glasses on. The director is actually David Silverman, a name Simpsons fans should immediately recognize. Silverman is a supervising animation director on the show and also worked on the movie Monsters, Inc.

While I'm sure David Silverman's direction will be just fine, I wonder if they ever considered having Brad Bird direct the film (or if Bird was even available, for that matter). Bird seems like an obvious choice to me, having worked on The Simpsons and also having helmed two of the more well-respected animated films in recent years, The Iron Giant and The Incredibles. I think a mix of Simpson-y irreverence mixed with Bird's knack for storytelling would have been nice, but oh well. I'm still excited, regardless.

Oh yeah, and Sitcoms Online is reporting that Albert Brooks (one of my favorite occasional guest voices) will make an appearance in the movie, too. This movie just keeps sounding better.

60 Minutes director dead at 63

by Adam Finley, posted Jan 29th 2006 9:30AM
Arthur Bloom, the owner of the stopwatch that has served as the symbol of 60 Minutes for over thirty years and the man who directed the popular news program since it debuted in 1968, died yesterday of cancer at the age of 63. Besides working on 60 Minutes, Bloom also worked with Dan Rather as the newsman prepared to take the reigns of the CBS News after Walter Cronkite stepped down. In addition to being with the program from the very beginning, Bloom also took over the show's live political coverage from 1974 to 1990. Besides the iconic stopwatch, Bloom created the basic aesthetic of the show, including the "magazine cover" images that introduced each segment.
