season premiere
The anxiety-inducing competition series returns to NBC with all-new episodes featuring new stunts to test the stamina and nerves of the contestants. 'Enlightened' (9.30PM ET, HBO) season finale
Amy persuades Levi to seek treatment after he has a late-night breakdown and at work, she challenges Dougie to make a presentation to Damon's group, regardless of the outcome. She also finds an unlikely ally to help her improve the environment at Abaddon.

'Hawaii Five-0' (10PM ET, CBS) midseason finale
On the eve of Chin Ho's wedding to Malia, the Five-0's investigation into a man left for dead in an abandoned WWII bunker crosses paths with Capt. Fryer's case of a Jane Doe.

Mike Rowe Discusses How 'Dirty Jobs' Has Evolved in the Recession (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 6th 2011 8:30PM
In an era where America's unemployment rate is stubbornly hovering around 10%, Mike Rowe's Discovery show 'Dirty Jobs' has evolved from gross-out TV into an exploration of the harsh conditions faced by the country's working poor.

As he discussed on 'Rachael Ray' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC), when the show started it was "really dirty and kind of gross," and while it still certainly is still those things, it's grown to mean something more.

"Today, the show is about people, and the conversation that's really grown out of the show isn't about poop-jokes and misadventures in animal husbandry ... it's really more about what is a good job today, and what are we encouraging people to pursue," Rowe said.

'Dirty Jobs' Host Refuses to Let Buckets Defeat Him (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Dec 29th 2010 7:55AM
Mike Rowe Attacks Buckets on 'Dirty Jobs'On 'Dirty Jobs' (Tue., 9PM ET on DSC), Mike Rowe encounters two buckets stuck together, one inside the other. They will not budge. Though not usually a perfectionist, Mike refuses to let this one go.

"Sometimes it just gets personal," he explains. "I want to be able to say I got these buckets apart. And I no longer care what it takes!"

His partner grabs a tool: that doesn't work. Rowe begins hitting the buckets against a ledge, then the edge of a barrel. Finally, the two men are able to pull the buckets apart. "It's the little things -- small victories," the host says.

Mike Rowe Gets Animated About 'South Park' (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Nov 9th 2010 7:45PM
Mike Rowe's TV aspirations reach well beyond 'Dirty Jobs' and manly voiceover work. In fact, the Discovery Channel host has been saying recently that he'd love to be on another show.

That show is 'South Park.' Really.

So I couldn't help but ask: why 'South Park'? Here, Mr. Rowe explains just exactly what he'd like to do on the foul-mouthed, un-PC cartoon, why he can see Cartman falling in love with 'Dirty Jobs' and how man-cow impregnation factors into all of this. Yes, in typical fashion, this does get a little filthy, but that's just the way we like Mike.

'Dirty Jobs': Mike Rowe Spits at 'Sea Monsters' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 3rd 2010 5:15AM
'Dirty Jobs': Mike Rowe Spits at 'Sea Monsters'On 'Dirty Jobs' (Tue., 8PM ET on Discovery), Mike Rowe takes on the worst careers known to man. He's climbed into sewers, collected bat droppings, even pulled chewing gum off of sidewalks. But the new episode adds a unique title to Rowe's resume -- "Sea Lamprey Exterminator."

What is a sea lamprey? They're horrifying "sea monsters." The creatures resemble a cross between an eel and a leech ... and they can grow up to three feet long.

Lampreys have suction-cup mouths with razor sharp teeth -- they attach themselves to fish, bore holes through their skin, and feast on the fish's innards. Grossed out yet? On occasion, lampreys have even attacked humans. Now it's Mike's job to deal with them.

What's Mike Rowe's Favorite Curse Word? The 'Dirty Jobs' Host Talks Dirty To Us (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Oct 26th 2010 8:55PM
Mike Rowe, 'Dirty Jobs'Mike Rowe has done over 250 'Dirty Jobs' (Tuesdays, 9PM ET on Discovery), but even when he's covered in sewage, up to his knees in garbage and being bitten by angry lemurs, we very rarely hear him curse.

Until now.

I asked the 'Dirty Jobs' frontman his favorite dirty word, and got a bleep-filled answer and very thorough explanation. Looks like he's put some thought into this one ... watch and see the fabulous filthiness fly.

The Show Girl Gets 'Dirty' with Mike Rowe, Talks 'In Treatment' & 'School Pride' (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Oct 22nd 2010 10:00AM
Mike Rowe, 'Dirty Jobs'Mike Rowe does a lot of 'Dirty Jobs,' but this week I get him to do the one job that millions of people around the world do every single day, often multiple times a day. Any guesses? He also shares cold, hard cell phone picture evidence (shown here) that a lemur bite is serious business, and says he'd love to romance the main character on one of TV's funniest shows.

I've also got details on the latest season of 'In Treatment,' including new castmembers Debra Winger and Amy Ryan and what the airing schedule is like this year, since they love to change it up and confuse us all.

Then I catch up with Cheryl Hines and Denise Cramsey to talk about their new reality-renovation show 'School Pride,' which they say has "the biggest impact of any renovation show ever" ... and judging by the emotion it stirs in me, I might have to agree.

Mike Rowe Talks 'Dirty Jobs,' Manscaping & Where He'll Be in 20 Years (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Oct 19th 2010 11:30AM
Mike Rowe of 'Dirty Jobs'I'll take any excuse I can get to hang out with Mike Rowe. Sure he's on a hit TV show, has a deep, velvety voice and is often described as "ruggedly handsome," but he's also hilarious and a genuinely good guy. Pretty much what you see on TV is what you get with Mike.

As 'Dirty Jobs' returns with new episodes (Tues., Oct. 19, 9PM ET on Discovery), Mike talks about working his way up -- to the sewer -- and reminisces about his glamorous Discovery Channel beginnings on a little travel show called 'Romantic Escapes.' He then explains why deep down, he doesn't like people (he kids, he kids!), and tells me why they'll never run out of 'Dirty Jobs.'

We also dish about most popular episodes, an upcoming manscaping segment with producer and regular target Dave Barsky going under the wax and what Mike will probably be doing in 20 years.

Top Five Death-Wish Shows on the Discovery Channel

by Jane Boursaw, posted Apr 10th 2010 9:00AM
Deadliest Catch, crab fishingDiscovery Channel unveiled its lineup for the 2010-11 season this week, and it looks like more stellar programming for the real-life stories network. You can read more about it here, but two that caught my eye are 'Engineering the Impossible,' where a team of specialists search for clues about how some of the world's most fantastic structures were built; and 'The Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero.' a documentary executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

This made me think about some of my favorite shows on the Discovery Channel, and I realized that they usually involve people in ridiculously disgusting or deadly situations. I think of these as the "real" reality shows, rather than the manufactured reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'The Amazing Race.'

Ok, we'll take Bear Grylls out of the equation, because, clearly, there's no need for him to be dropped into the wilderness and have to drink his own pee. But the others on my list are just awesome people doing death-wish jobs no one else wants to do. Follow me after the jump to see who made my top five list.

New TV on DVD releases this week

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 25th 2010 6:00PM
You're A Good Man, Charlie BrownHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

I guess this is a good week to find out what type of TV fan you are. Are you going to be Callan or are you going to buy Bridget's Sexiest Beaches?

The only thing I might buy is the remastered edition of You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. I can't remember the last time I saw it, but I've been on a Peanuts kick lately. Though it's a lot of singing and dancing (it's based on the classic Broadway musical) and I'm not sure if I can handle that.

  • Bridget's Sexiest Beaches - Season 1
  • Callan - Set 2
  • Dirty Jobs - Collection 5
  • Inspector Lewis - Complete Collection, Series 1 & 2
