Dr. Drew Pinsky is a favorite guest of 'The Wendy Williams Show' (weekdays, syndicated on Fox). Williams, who is a former cocaine abuser, has always been fascinated with celebrity addictions, and a couple of weeks ago offered her couch as a "safe place" for Charlie Sheen, who appeared sober and healthy. Today she got Dr. Drew's perspective on Sheen's recent recovery.

When Williams asked Dr. Drew if he believed Sheen is now sober, he carefully said, "I believe he's abstinent right now." He went on to explain that if Sheen is an addict, and that all signs point to the fact that he is, then "he will go back. That's just the way addiction works."

Amy Winehouse made unsuccessful attempts to reach out to Dr. Drew Pinsky in her final days, according to Janice Dickinson and the 'Celebrity Rehab' guru himself.

Unfortunately, it appears that Dr. Drew, who decided to step away from 'Celebrity Rehab' after this season due to his increasingly busy TV schedule, missed her calls.

"I found out also yesterday that, believe it or not, she was trying to contact me, which is weird. Janice Dickinson told me that," Dr. Drew told Kevin & Bean in a KROQ radio interview. "I remember getting these calls from Europe and I was like, 'What the hell is this?' and Janice goes, 'It was Amy.' We could have maybe gotten her over to someplace really good, but again, more sadness to that story."

It was a sad off-season for 'Celebrity Rehab,' which saw two former patients, Mike Starr and Jeff Conaway, die of drug overdoses. With the show returning for its fifth season Sunday night, June 26, on VH1, we're starting to feel more and more conflicted about tuning in. Rumors that Michael Lohan was paid $180K to go on the show this season and that Rachel Uchitel was paid $500K last season add to a cloud of ethical issues swirling around the show.

We had questions: Are we watching glorified train-wreck TV, or real rehab where good work can be done? And why is the show so, dare we say, addictive to watch? We had to talk to a shrink to sort it all out.

"I feel that 'Celebrity Rehab' does for rehab and substance abuse what the 'Jersey Shore' does for New Jersey," says Eric Sherman, LCSW, a psychotherapist who's treated patients with substance abuse problems in Montclair, N.J., and New York City. "It gets publicity out there, but is that really the most helpful thing for people to be seeing?"

"What Dr. Drew is doing is in essence paying people money to come on the show," he continued. "It's encouraging bad behavior -- the more they act out, the more screen time they get. And by very the nature of television, things get boiled down to highlight the most dysfunctional and the most emotional. It gives a somewhat false impression of what one might actually encounter in substance abuse treatment."

On the upcoming season of 'Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,' Michael Lohan apologized to his daughter, Lindsay Lohan, for passing down genes that contribute to an addictive personality. Wednesday on 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC), Lohan said his often tumultuous relationship with his daughter is getting better, and that they were recently together for Father's Day.

"It's a hell of a lot better than it was," he said of his relationship with Lindsay. "It's a lot better. There's still some ... It's not Lindsay anymore. It's the damage that was done as a result of my divorce with Dina."

Lohan also denied that Lindsay was considering dropping the last name Lohan, and said he stands by his daughter as she is under house arrest for allegedly stealing a necklace from a jewelery store. "I believe what my daughter tells me," he said. "When she's wrong, I'll tell her she's wrong."

Dr. Drew Pinsky suggests that Charlie Sheen should be committed on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC), pointing out that the troubled actor's behavior seems to warrant involuntary confinement.

After conferring with psychiatrists and watching Sheen's Ustream broadcast from Monday, Pinsky recommends a 5150 psychiatric hold, which allows police to take individuals into custody for a 72-hour period if proven a danger to themselves and others.
