Since Michael Bloomberg became mayor of New York, the city has been notorious for its mommy-state health initiatives. Part of that has been a series of harsh ads featuring folks like "tracheotomy guy" Rolando Martinez and ads featuring a smoker who has to get his gangrenous foot amputated.

The latest set of ads, which air three times an hour in New York, depict a sick woman getting a bronchoscopy. During this, we hear the whistling noise of air whipping around the tumor in the lung, and the doctor explains that at that point, it's "too late to operate."

The first few times I saw the ad, though, something struck me as odd: it was the doctor's voice. It sounded very dubbed and announcer-y, as if some Shakespearean actor was reading from a script. Upon further review, it looked like it was indeed a dubbing job, and not a very good one at that.

Shin Chan, a dubbed version of the Japanese anime (and manga) also known as Crayon Shin Chan, will debut on Adult Swim this Saturday at 10:30 pm. My anime knowledge is rather limited, so if you know anything about this series feel free to school me in the comments below. Evan Dorkin, creator of Welcome to Eltingville, helped with re-writing the dialogue and dubbing the series for American audiences. He talks about it on his Live Journal, and it sounds like he's trying to distance himself somewhat from the project, or at least protect himself from the ire of anime lovers who hate dubbed versions of anything. While it borrows a concept from shows like Space Ghost and Sealab 2021, "The Skeletor Show," an independent effort with three episodes currently on YouTube, doesn't quite stand up to those programs. Nevertheless, the show has some great moments and I found myself laughing out loud more than once. Dubbing new voices over footage of the old He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon, the creators turn evil Skeletor into the star of his own wacky sitcom along with Evil-Lyn, Beastman, and the occasional special guest. Like I said, it's not as good as the shows it tries to emulate, but it's also much better than it has any right to be. I also like how the episodes sometimes address comments, such as Orko's hilarious response to one comment which simply read, "This sucks, you faggot."
