Happy Earth Day! A Salute to Five Eco-Friendly Characters
by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 22nd 2011 12:00PM
We wouldn't be true TV nerds if we didn't say we've learned a lot about the environment from our favorite characters. In fact, some of our favorite shows feature very Earth-conscious characters.
To celebrate Earth Day and those who are making a difference (even if it's fictional), AOL TV presents our five favorite environment-lovin' TV characters.
Lisa Simpson, 'The Simpsons'
Not only is she a vegetarian -- yes, there are environmental benefits in being a vegetarian -- Lisa cares deeply about the environment. After all, 'The Simpsons Movie' kicks off with an environmental crisis and Lisa is right there to lead the charge in the cleanup. "Lisa believes in leaving the Earth a cleaner and better place than she found it," Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa Simpson, said in 2001.
Swimming With the Sharks on 'The Simpsons' (VIDEO)

On an Earth Day-themed episode of 'The Simpsons' (Sun., 8PM ET on Fox), Homer decides to become more ecologically conscious. Of course, this eventually results in him falling off a boat and being surrounded by deadly sharks. Why "of course"? Because when Homer Simpson is involved, any seemingly good idea will always lead to danger and disaster.Watch the video after the jump.
Yogi's Gang: When Saturday Mornings Became Green
by Rich Keller, posted Apr 22nd 2010 10:05AM

We all know about the Green movement that has pushed its way into every facet of our lives. And though its been around for a few years, some folks believe this thinking of greener living, which equals the lack of oceanfront property in the middle of Iowa, is a brand new concept. This couldn't be further from the truth!
The fact is, there have been surges of environmentally-conscious thought in every decade since Earth Day was conceived back in 1970. The biggest surge came in the early '70s when Woodsy Owl told us to "Give a hoot -- don't pollute' and a crying Native American lamented over the trash thrown out of moving cars. This thinking even permeated the safe haven of Saturday morning cartoons during this time, thanks in no part to a bunch of washed-up Hanna-Barbera characters in a flying, wooden ark.
Sam Champion falls down, goes boom
by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 22nd 2009 5:26PM

Sam Champion almost died on Good Morning America this morning, doing a segment about the great outdoors. Damn Earth Day! He was trying to make his way down a cliff. I love the fact that after he whips around the rock, he goes right into happy "here's your weather!" mode. They train those morning show hosts well.

The Daily Show: April 23, 2007

"Faisceau-F@#k-Au Palais de L'Elysee": French President Jacques Chirac -- whose name is more fun to obnoxiously repeat than my own -- will not return for a third term. "Bad Impressions?": Senior Washington Correspondent John Oliver stopped by to continue the Alberto Gonzalez coverage. He explained exactly why Bush would let such incompetence to flourish around him... Obviously, Bush would rather have his people sound like idiots than divulge inside information on the administration. Logical! I'm glad they're not using Oliver non-stop now. Always in moderation, folks.
Captain Planet still defends the Earth
by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 22nd 2006 2:41PM
I've never seen the cable channel
Boomerang. It wasn't on the cable system (Adelphia) at my old apartment, and it's not on my new one (Comcast). But I do
remember Captain Planet. I was never a big fan of the show, but I can understand its appeal. The New York
Times has a piece on how
Boomerang is showing two, 13 episode marathons today to commemorate Earth Day.The marathon will include the sixth season of the show, which was shown overseas but until now was never seen in the United States.
