Eddie Izzard Tells 'The Green Room' That He Wants to Be a Politician (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 2nd 2011 5:13AM
Eddie Izzard, 'The Green Room with Paul Provenza'Things took a turn toward the serious with Eddie Izzard in 'The Green Room with Paul Provenza' (Thu., 11PM ET on Showtime). The comics started talking about how comedy can be used to put forth serious ideas and raise serious issues.

Izzard stunned his fellow comics by announcing that he's going to run for political office.

He said that the comedy environment that's been fostered in the US and the UK means that "you can be comic philosophers where you just put out your idea of where things should go or what things should be or whatever. I think people want to listen to a voice."

As such, he explained his decision to enter politics. He said that in 2020 he'll either run for Mayor of London, or stand for election as an MP either in the UK or the European Parliament. While most of his fellow guests agreed he could win, and might even do well at it, Jimmy Carr couldn't understand it at all.

Eddie Izzard Would Have Made Humans Vegetarians If He Was God (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 3rd 2011 6:48AM
Eddie Izzard & Kristen Bell, 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson'Eddie Izzard got into a deep discussion with Kristen Bell and Craig Feguson in the streets of Paris on 'The Late Late Show' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS). He presented a notion of how different the world might be had God made people vegetarians, rather than carnivores.

"No one would actually know about killing at all except when your granddad died," he extrapolated, making an interesting case about how vegetarianism from the beginning might have impacted murder and crime.

"If you make everyone so that we didn't even know how to kill," he said. "Then that would have worked a lot better. If I was God I'd do that."

Craig Ferguson and Eddie Izzard Are Not Talking About a Bike Pump (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 20th 2011 6:38AM
Eddie Izzard, 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson'Craig Ferguson has a dirty mind, but the guests on 'The Late Late Show' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS) aren't always so quick to catch on. When Ferguson asked Eddie Izzard if he was going to have an orchestra at an upcoming show, Izzard cracked a joke about it being a tiny little inflatable orchestra.

Ferguson immediately started thinking of something else you can pump up, and started suggesting it toward Izzard. But a pump and self pleasure are two different things, and Izzard assumed Ferguson was referring to the latter.

"That is not how you masturbate, I tell you," Izzard said. "That is a bicycle pump."

'United States of Tara' Season 3, Episode 2 Recap

Toni Collette['United States of Tara' - 'Crackerjack']

Admit it, who among us would have passed up a little extra help with our homework back in our school days -- especially if we could leave the thinking up to someone else altogether? If you just happen to have an alternate identity who is a published author on psychology, I say why not defer to the expert?

Study buddies are one thing, but as much as we all might have believed that we knew better than our teachers when we were kids, most of us probably stopped short of actually attempting to teach the class ourselves.

Apparently, Tara Gregson isn't so discerning.

Eddie Izzard Talks Politics on 'Chelsea Lately'Comedian/actor/political activist Eddie Izzard and Chelsea Handler are agreed on whom they hope will win today's U.S. Senate election in California. Izzard recently attended a benefit for LA Democrats and incumbent Senator Barbara Boxer.

"I'm supporting Boxer," said Handler on 'Chelsea Lately' (weeknights, 11PM ET on E!). "I will be voting for her tomorrow, as I hope anyone who is watching me will do -- in California," she clarified.

Since Izzard is British, he is unable to vote. Still, the host said (only half-jokingly), "I want to thank you for coming from another country and trying to clear up the mess that we've made here."

'Late Late Show': Eddie Izzard Loses Breath From Couch-Jumping (VIDEO)

Eddie Izzard Loses Breath from Couch-JumpingEddie Izzard's entrance on 'The Late Late Show' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS) was mildly reminiscent of Tom Cruise's appearance on 'Oprah.' But did Cruise lose his breath? Izzard jumped up and down on the host's couch chairs, at one point diving over the back.

"I was just about to [read] the tweets and emails -- I don't suppose I could persuade you to help me?" asked Craig Ferguson. Through panting gasps, the comedian replied, "No, I'm exhausted."

"I'll fill in some time while you get your breath back," said Ferguson. He grabbed a harmonica and began playing a lonesome tune.

Izzard picked up on it and started doing some improv: "It's a cold night, Sarge -- cold night here in the trenches." The host added, "That's right, there youngen, but don't you worry 'cause I got here me mouth organ."

'The Simpsons' - 'To Surveil With Love' Recap

by Sharon Knolle, posted May 3rd 2010 8:29AM
The Simpsons - To Surveil With Love(S21E20) From the inspired 'Tik Tok' musical opening sequence to the last gag, 'To Surveil With Love' ranks as one of the best 'Simpsons' episodes in years.

I never expected the rest of the episode to live up to that killer opening, but, unbelievably, it just got better as it went along.

The bit that had me laughing the hardest: After surveillance cameras are installed in every inch of Springfield, Bart marking the town's one blind spot by dropping his pants and drawing a line every time he doesn't hear Ned gasping, "Buttocks!" "Tushie! or "Boy cheeks!" A perfectly funny bit that got even funnier when Homer asks Bart, whose pants are still down around his ankles, what he's doing. "Experimenting with my butt," says Bart. "My little Einstein," Homer says proudly as he pats Bart's head.

The Wanda Sykes Show, Eddie IzzardNews Flash: The Atlantic is a magical ocean. We always knew it, and Eddie Izzard explained why on 'The Wanda Sykes Show' (Sat., 11PM ET on Fox).

"When you think of us, we all live in castles, all the children are Shakespeare, and we're all brilliantly cultured," he said. "And we think you all own mountains, have nine cars, and eat gold for breakfast."

Wait ... you mean they don't all live in castles in Europe? Our bubble is burst!

Eddie Izzard Shows Up on 'Craig Ferguson' (VIDEO)

Craig Ferguson, Eddie Izzard, Liza MinnelliEddie Izzard showed up unexpectedly on 'The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on CBS). Ordinarily, you'd think these two guys getting together would be a barrel of monkeys, but the joke about the cardboard faces on sticks sort of fell flat.

Ok, we'll admit that Liza Minnelli as Craig Ferguson's face was mildly amusing. But the chemistry/geography/mathematics bit just flatlined for us. Your take?

What Nick is thankful for

by Nick Zaino, posted Nov 24th 2009 6:30PM
Modern Family on ABCA lot of us here at TV Squad have been listing that for which we are thankful. Like many of the others, I feel I have to start with my wife and family, and my friends. And I'd also add the comedy community in Boston, where I work, and beyond, for giving me something worth writing about and following day after day, year after year.

But this is a TV site, so the big part of this list is the things I am thankful I can see on the rundown TV in my office that makes a horrible cranking sound when I try to play DVDs, ot downstairs when I'm not bothering anyone by trying to catch up on thirteen discs of the Steve Coogan Collection.

My Local Library

Don't laugh. I have a rule that I won't watch an episodic TV series unless I've started it from the beginning, which means I wind up missing a lot of shows everyone else is screaming praises for.

All Star cast for BBC's Day of the Triffids

by Brad Trechak, posted Feb 12th 2009 12:06PM
Eddie IzzardA myriad of celebrities are set to star in the BBC's modern remake of the classic sci-fi novel Day of the Triffids. Names include Jason Priestley, Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox and Eddie Izzard.

There seems to be quite a few remakes going on in the world of British television at the moment (Triffids was adapted for BBC television once already in 1981 and had a big-screen version in 1962). We have The Prisoner, Survivors, and now Day of the Triffids. Both Survivors and Triffids deal with the theme of a post-apocalyptic world.

I'm not sure if Triffids was the first story to use the post-apocalyptic genre, but it's certainly one of the most popular. The book itself is a combination of the movies The Happening (where plants attack humanity) and Blindness (where most of humanity is rendered blind).

The anti-Soviet themes of the book won't be applicable in these times, but I'm sure the flesh-eating Triffids will have other, more modern analogies.

Eddie Izzard: The TV Squad Interview

by Joel Keller, posted Nov 2nd 2008 11:03AM
Eddie Izzard"Eddie loves doing interviews!" is the bubbly e-mail that came to me as I was trying to arrange a date and time for the following interview with comedian Eddie Izzard. That part didn't surprise me; I've read interviews before where Izzard was engaging and expansive on all sorts of issues. The surprising thing was who the PR person e-mailing me was representing: Congressman Dennis Kucinich.

Yes, that's right: Everyone's favorite longshot Presidential candidate has Izzard in his corner as he tries to retain his House seat this week. In fact, this afternoon, Izzard will be interviewing Kucinich at a campaign fundraising event in Cleveland (tickets can still be purchased for the 3 PM ET event). We've heard before that Izzard is interested in politics; but how in the hell did he get involved in Kucinich's congressional campaign? I talk to Izzard about that, and The Riches movie that he seems to think should happen, after the jump.
