Kevin Clash on Being the Voice of 'Sesame Street's' Elmo on 'The Daily Show' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Oct 25th 2011 3:30AM
Kevin Clash ('Sesame Street' Elmo), 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart'According to Kevin Clash, it was by default that he wound up as the voice of Elmo on 'Sesame Street.' But it was his performance that turned the character into an icon, though most people are still surprised when they see him and discover what he does.

On 'The Daily Show' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on Comedy Central), he shared a fun story about being asked by a flight attendant to speak to the children over the microphone on an airplane as it was landing. The best bit was that when he was finished, he said he saw people peeking into the aisles to see who it was. When he came through, they shook their heads in disbelief.

The Voice of Elmo Visits 'The View' (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Oct 24th 2011 3:15PM
Kevin Clash, the puppeteer known as the voice of Elmo, stopped by 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) to look back on his career and talk about the new film 'Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey.' He surprised the ladies with a surprisingly deep, Barry White-esque voice that was a hilarious contrast to Elmo's high-pitched squeal.

Delving into the history of Elmo, Clash mentioned that he was the third person to voice the lovable Muppet, as Jim Henson found that both of the first voices, one of which Clash described as a screaming caveman, wasn't quite right. Clash came up with Elmo's trademark high-pitched tone and practiced that summer on his mom's daycare class. The rest is Muppet history.

Elmo's Best Moments: Celebrating 25 Years of the Furry Red Monster

by Rich Keller, posted Nov 18th 2010 11:40AM
Elmo was born 25 years ago thanks to the puppetry of Kevin Clash.November 18, 1985 was a day that changed children's television. It was on this day that Elmo, the furry red monster of 'Sesame Street,' came into his own, thanks to puppeteer Kevin Clash.

An extra for years, voiced on occasion by folks like Carol Spinney (Big Bird) and Richard Hunt (Scooter from 'The Muppet Show'), Clash turned the very minor character into a 3 1/2-year-old mainstay that, depending on your feelings, transformed 'Sesame Street' in a good or bad way.

Since his introduction to 'Sesame Street,' Elmo has become the face of the four-decade old series, appearing on talk shows, primetime series, his own movie ('Elmo in Grouchland') and on the toy shelves as Tickle Me Elmo. He even has his own 15-minute show-within-a-show on 'Sesame Street' titled 'Elmo's World.'

Katy Perry in 'Sesame Street'Elmo wants Katy Perry back on 'Sesame' Street.

The furry red Muppet appeared on 'Good Morning America' to address the recent controversy over Katy Perry's 'Sesame Street' guest appearance on the children's show. When her 'Hot 'N Cold' duet with Elmo was released on YouTube, some viewers complained about her cleavage and the segment was cut from the TV broadcast.

"We'll have another [play date]. Elmo loves Ms. Katy and we had a good time," Elmo said. "So we'll have another play date! Yes Miss Katy, come, come, come, come -- we'll have another play date!"

'Sesame Street' executive producer Carol Lynn Parente told 'GMA' that during filming, nobody thought Perry's dress was inappropriate. She also said that parents were "very split" over Perry's appearance.

Betty White and Elmo Lock Lips on 'Today' (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted May 3rd 2010 1:00PM
Warning: Small children may want to avert their eyes. During a teaser for upcoming segments with Betty White and Sesame Street character Elmo on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC), White and the three-and-a-half-year-old monster kiss several times, once directly on the lips.

At the end of the teaser, Matt Lauer mentions switching to the news desk before things between the two "get out of control." But, never fear, it all seems in harmless fun.

Elmo Gives Wendy Williams a Musical Tribute

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 1st 2010 7:25PM
I didn't think it was possible for Elmo from 'Sesame Street' to sound more ridiculous than he already does, but that's just because no one thought to put his high-pitched boyish tome to "auto tune"... until now.

The red-haired one appeared on a recent episode of 'The Wendy Williams Show' and performed her techno pop theme song complete with a set of backup dancers and an auto-tune machine that could make T-Pain proud. Mark my words: the two are already working on a duets album as we speak.

Sesame Street's 40th: Five funniest characters

by Danny Gallagher, posted Nov 13th 2009 11:02AM
It's not surprising that a colorful and lively show like Sesame Street, one devised by the genius that was Muppets creator Jim Henson, was at heart a comedy. What is surprising is that so many adults who grew up with the show still find it so damn funny (or maybe that has more to do with the rise of marijuana use, but beggars can't be users, er, choosers).

In fact, a recent box set of the show's earliest episodes came with a disclaimer that the episodes contained within it were "not for kids." That's also because it contained the rare lost episode from the early 1970s when Grover and Prairie Dawn accidentally wandered into the Plato's Retreat swingers club where they learned the difference between "top" and "bottom".

The point is adults can find just as much to laugh at as their kids do and here are the biggest chortle-makers.

Now Sesame Street takes on the iPod

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 6th 2009 2:02PM
Sesame Street did a Mad Men spoof recently, and now they're spoofing another contemporary pop culture icon: the iPod.

In this clip, the Muppets are seen wearing headphones and dancing in silhouette a la various commercials for Apple's iPod. Steve Jobs called and is going to sue PBS. Just kidding!

Sunny day, everything's not-so-A-OK for the Sesame Workshop

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 12th 2009 11:00AM
Sesame StreetIf the very thought of the fledgling economy makes you just a little bit sad, get some Kleenex and a shoulder to cry on because you're about to bawl your eyes out.

If you are the kind of heartless bastard who won't cry at the discovery of this news, you should. Get a fork, poke yourself in the eyes, and let nature take its course.

The Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization that created the world's greatest kids show in the history of whatever, is laying off a huge chunk of its staff.

Scrubs: My ABC's

by Joel Keller, posted Jan 28th 2009 10:05AM
Scrubs: My ABC's(S08E05) After four episodes that have ranged from the pretty-decent to the almost-classic, we start this week's double-shot of Scrubs with the season's first real clunker. Which is odd, because you'd think the presence of everyone's Sesame Street favorites in J.D.'s fantasies would have made for a funnier show. But I'm starting to wonder if it's becoming less funny because it's nothing we haven't seen from this show many times before.

Sesame Street is going to be awesome - VIDEO

by Annie Wu, posted Jul 31st 2008 9:37AM
Will Arnett on Sesame StreetThe new season of Sesame Street is right around the corner and, while I normally wouldn't give it a second thought, I am unusually excited right now. No, this isn't a snarky rant about how I've been driven to children's TV because of the sorry state of grown-up programming. Sesame Street's 39th season, starting August 11th, looks like it has a lot of fun lined up not only for the pre-schoolers but parents as well. I already posted Feist's upcoming special take on "1 2 3 4", but I had no idea how many amazing guest appearances were coming. Just check out this star-filled highlight reel after the jump.

The Daily Show: June 19, 2008 - VIDEOS

by Annie Wu, posted Jun 20th 2008 2:03PM
Jon and Gitmo"Baracknophobia": The irrational fear of hope is spreading, even among Barack Obama's own people. Obama campaign staffers sent away two women with head scarves because they didn't want to remind people at the photo op about the rumors of Obama being Muslim. Not as bad as the baby-punching, I must say, and at least he apologized.

"Guantanamo Baywatch": The Supreme Court ruled that prisoners in Guantanamo Bay can contest their detention before a judge. Some folks aren't too happy about this, what with their poor Mexican topiary managers having fewer rights and all. The managers are Mexican, by the way, not the topiaries. Senior Imprisoned Correspondent, Gitmo, stopped by to share his thoughts. Man, Jon Stewart is really no good with puppets. Every voice he does sounds like South Park's Jennifer "Taco-Flavored Kisses" Lopez.
