A New House for Mother's Day on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted May 9th 2011 12:45AM
Ty Pennington, 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'It was a wall-to-wall 'Mother's Day' theme throughout this week's installment of 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC). Ty Pennington and gang took care of volleyball coach Carrie Prewitt, who stepped in to take care of the three Brewer sisters when their parents died from drug abuse.

Now this family of four was living in a run-down double-wide trailer, so ABC and the 'EM:HE' crew decided to tear it down and give them a house so huge the three girls could probably grow up, get married and still not have to leave home.

"Our old home felt like right at the end of the book and it was the end of the story," oldest daughter Ashley said after the reveal. "Coach had many memories in that home that we didn't get to share with her. Our new home feels like we're opening the 'Brewitt' book."

Dickinson family, 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'Bill Dickinson has been serving in the military for 17 years, and is currently deployed in Afghanistan. Left at home are his wife, India, and their five children. Unfortunately, the home they were living in was literally beyond repair. Everyone who looked at it simply said it needed to be bulldozed because of wiring, mold and flood damage. Enter 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC).

Ty Pennington and the team came in and did what the contractors told them to, tearing down the old house and replacing it with a 4,000-square foot home with separate rooms for each of the Dickinson's five children.

While Bill was never able to give India an engagement ring during their relationship, the show made that possible during a live video chat.

Ty Pennington, 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'Ty Pennington and the team at 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC) are always looking for new and exciting ways to demolish a home. They've had a huge crowd physically pull one down a hill and even blown one up with dynamite.

So, inspired by Fred, the father of this week's family, who is a truck driver, they decided to take it down "big rig style," as Pennington said.

Designer Johnny Littlefield donated his rig to the cause. "I was gonna take her to the salvage yard anyway because she was long past due, and I thought I'd give her one last ride into the sunset."

'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition': Technology Gives Paralyzed Man Independence (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 18th 2011 5:07AM
Hall family, 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'After a car accident left him paralyzed from the neck down a year ago, Carl Hall found himself trapped in a situation made him frustrated and at times angry. That's where the 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM on ABC) was able to step in and help.

Because he could no longer manage stairs, the Halls and their four kids had to move from their two-story home to a condo where there simply wasn't room for Carl's wheelchair to maneuver, much less that many people to live.

To make matters worse, he wasn't able to sleep in a bed with his wife, and he was reliant on the family to help him manage so many of his daily activities, including such mundane things as turning on and off the lights. So one of the priorities for the team was to give Carl back some much-needed independence.

But it wasn't just Ty Pennington and the 'Extreme Makeover' crew that headed to Fort Hood. They brought along comedian Dane Cook to bring some laughs to the service personnel.

"My dad was a military guy," Cook said. "And just instilled in me at a very early age that giving back to your country was paramount to anything else."

Justin Bieber Visits 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'On 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC), any glee from getting a new house was trumped by the chance to meet -- and dance with -- Justin Bieber. When he taught Katrina some of his trademark moves, she wasn't shy at all.

"We do it differently where I come from," she said, and a dance battle ensued: Katrina and her friends against Bieber and his dancers. Her mother noted, "Having her friends there and being able to go onstage and meet Justin Bieber, you could just see a stronger Katrina. And I'm so thankful for that."

'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' Becomes the Tree House Edition for One Family (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jan 10th 2011 3:43AM
'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'Oh, those talented designers and builders on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM on ABC). Apparently, this week they could have saved themselves a lot of time based on the family's reaction to their backyard surprise.

We could have called it 'Extreme Makeover: Tree House Edition.'

Because of the family's love of trees, the team gave them a truly impressive structure, stretching across several trees and rising high into the sky. With beds and chairs, walkways and a porch overlooking the actual house, it seemed to get as much, if not more, enthusiasm than the house itself.

A Young Boy Pays It Forward by Giving His Old House to a Friend's Family on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (VIDEO)

'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition'A disabled boy gave the ultimate gift to a friend and her family on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM on ABC). Garrett Grommesh earned a makeover for his family in order to make his own life easier; he's confined to a wheelchair. But Garrett's concerns were almost immediately for his friend Arlinda Hajdari and her family.

The six members of the Hajdari family have been sharing a two-bedroom apartment since coming over to America from Kosovo. Because of the good condition of the Grommesh home other than wheelchair accessibility, Garrett asked if they could pay it forward and give their home to the Hajdari family.

The 'Extreme Makeover' team physically relocated the home across town to do just that. Of course, they couldn't resist fixing it up a bit as well.

'Extreme Makeover': A Blind Couple 'Shines' While Dancing in the Moonlight (VIDEO)

'Extreme Makeover': A Blind Couple 'Shines' While Dancing in the MoonlightThe Anderson family lives in Maple Heights, Ohio. Parents Andre and Jasmine are blind as a result of diabetes, and they have two sons -- 13-year-old Jaison (who is hearing-impaired) and 7-year-old Jahzion -- plus a guide dog named Valentine. The family lives in a rickety, dangerous old house. But they haven't let their surroundings or their disabilities hold them back.

Andre and Jasmine run a disability awareness center -- now, courtesy of 'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC), they get a change in their lives. They receive a new mansion-style home -- which includes a thumbprint reader that unlocks the front door, a bar-code scanner to identify food in the kitchen, and a laptop to read books for Andre. (There's also a new heart-shaped bed for Valentine, which is nice, since we're suckers for guide dogs.)

But the nicest gift of all might be a special moment for the married couple. As Jasmine and Andre are moving into their new house, Ohio-born R&B singer John Legend shows up and performs his song 'Shine,' which includes these lyrics: "Ordinary people, could be a hero/ Don't blow out the light/ Let them shine/ Let them shine on."

'Extreme Makeover': Saving a School That Was Washed Away in a FloodThe Tennessee floods of May, 2010 were a "1,000-year-event" -- the type of flood predicted to occur only once every millennium. Flooding caused at least $1.5 billion worth of damage in Nashville alone. It was a devastating once-in-a-lifetime event for residents in the area. Many television viewers also saw a one-time-only sight. Shocked viewers watched as a schoolhouse floated away -- down a flooded highway that had become a river.

This swept-away schoolhouse was part of the Lighthouse Christian School, which has been run by the Sweatt family since 2003. After the floods, the Sweatts led relief efforts in the area, assisting over 200 families. But now, their school is in danger of shutting for good ... unless they get some help. So 'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC) comes their aid.

Saved From Death by a Dog on 'Extreme Makeover' (VIDEO)

Saved From Death by a Dog on 'Extreme Makeover'The Marshall-Spreier family isn't just lucky to have a new home ... they're lucky to be alive. Over a year ago, their house was devastated by a fire. Since then, they've been living in tents, camped out in their own backyard -- next to the semi-incinerated remains of their former abode.

And time was running out. The family lives in Idaho, and winter was approaching. They needed help to survive ... and quickly. Still, despite their sad story, the family had a lot to be grateful for. They were saved from the fire by the barking of Betsy, the family dog.

Betsy saved the lives of single mom Jane Marshall -- a cancer survivor -- and the lives of her eight children. On 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC), Ty Pennington and his team showed up to help the humans, and to honor the dog.
