'Extreme Makeover': A Blind Couple 'Shines' While Dancing in the Moonlight (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 6th 2010 5:15AM
'Extreme Makeover': A Blind Couple 'Shines' While Dancing in the MoonlightThe Anderson family lives in Maple Heights, Ohio. Parents Andre and Jasmine are blind as a result of diabetes, and they have two sons -- 13-year-old Jaison (who is hearing-impaired) and 7-year-old Jahzion -- plus a guide dog named Valentine. The family lives in a rickety, dangerous old house. But they haven't let their surroundings or their disabilities hold them back.

Andre and Jasmine run a disability awareness center -- now, courtesy of 'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC), they get a change in their lives. They receive a new mansion-style home -- which includes a thumbprint reader that unlocks the front door, a bar-code scanner to identify food in the kitchen, and a laptop to read books for Andre. (There's also a new heart-shaped bed for Valentine, which is nice, since we're suckers for guide dogs.)

But the nicest gift of all might be a special moment for the married couple. As Jasmine and Andre are moving into their new house, Ohio-born R&B singer John Legend shows up and performs his song 'Shine,' which includes these lyrics: "Ordinary people, could be a hero/ Don't blow out the light/ Let them shine/ Let them shine on."

'Extreme Makeover': Saving a School That Was Washed Away in a Flood (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 15th 2010 5:20AM
'Extreme Makeover': Saving a School That Was Washed Away in a FloodThe Tennessee floods of May, 2010 were a "1,000-year-event" -- the type of flood predicted to occur only once every millennium. Flooding caused at least $1.5 billion worth of damage in Nashville alone. It was a devastating once-in-a-lifetime event for residents in the area. Many television viewers also saw a one-time-only sight. Shocked viewers watched as a schoolhouse floated away -- down a flooded highway that had become a river.

This swept-away schoolhouse was part of the Lighthouse Christian School, which has been run by the Sweatt family since 2003. After the floods, the Sweatts led relief efforts in the area, assisting over 200 families. But now, their school is in danger of shutting for good ... unless they get some help. So 'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC) comes their aid.

Saved From Death by a Dog on 'Extreme Makeover' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 8th 2010 4:37AM
Saved From Death by a Dog on 'Extreme Makeover'The Marshall-Spreier family isn't just lucky to have a new home ... they're lucky to be alive. Over a year ago, their house was devastated by a fire. Since then, they've been living in tents, camped out in their own backyard -- next to the semi-incinerated remains of their former abode.

And time was running out. The family lives in Idaho, and winter was approaching. They needed help to survive ... and quickly. Still, despite their sad story, the family had a lot to be grateful for. They were saved from the fire by the barking of Betsy, the family dog.

Betsy saved the lives of single mom Jane Marshall -- a cancer survivor -- and the lives of her eight children. On 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC), Ty Pennington and his team showed up to help the humans, and to honor the dog.

Hearing for the First Time on 'Extreme Makeover' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 1st 2010 4:10AM
Hearing for the First Time on 'Extreme Makeover' 'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC) provides deserving people with better surroundings. But what if you can't hear what surrounds you in the first place? On the new episode, the team provides a home -- but they also help a bunch of students feel more at home with themselves.

Ty Pennington and his team must rebuild the Oregon School for the Deaf. This school helps the deaf community in that region, but they're suffering from a lack of funding. So the 'Makeover' squad shows up -- and they don't just want to change the housing.

The school's dormitories date from the 1950s, and now are structurally unsafe. Plus, they look like a "prison," according to one young man. The housing is rebuilt, but more than that, a greater effort is made. The team provides students with hearing aids, allowing them to hear the outside world ... for the first time ever.

'Extreme Makeover': Tragedy, Loss, and a New Home (VIDEO)

'Extreme Makeover': Tragedy, Loss, and a New HomeTwo years ago, Trisha Urban lost her husband Andrew. This happened just before the arrival of Trisha's daughter Cora -- who was born on February 5th, 2009. Following Andrew's death, Trisha was too depressed to take care of herself. She basically lived in a single room of her old house, hiding in the log cabin that she and Andrew once shared.

While Trisha hid, the house gradually crumbled around her. Now, Trisha is getting a second chance. On 'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC). Ty Pennington and his team provided a new home for Trisha and Cora -- complete with a fairy tale-style playhouse for Cora, and space for the family's many farm animals.

But the new house also contained a piece of the old: A wooden beam from the centuries-old cabin that Trisha once shared with her husband.

'DWTS' Performers Create a Flash Mob on 'Extreme Makeover'It's time to move to the groove on 'Extreme Makeover' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC). The 'Makeover' crew visited Neenah, Wisconsin -- where they helped out Rhex Arboleda and his family.

Rhex Arboleda and his wife were living in a tiny house with their five children. Rhex is a hometown hero -- despite his tough circumstances, he created a local program called "Move to the Groove," to help fight childhood obesity.

So it was appropriate that 'Dancing With the Stars' cast members showed up to help out. Derek Hough even insisted on pitching in with the construction work during the week-long "build."

'Extreme Makeover' -- Laughter Instead of Tears, as Comedians Help Out (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Oct 11th 2010 4:16AM
'Extreme Makeover' -- Laughter Instead of Tears, as Comedians Help Out'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC), promised a "tear-free" episode. And that's what we got ... almost. In place of the standard sob-fest, the producers guaranteed a completely upbeat show. To accomplish this, they enlisted a bunch of comedians -- including Cedric the Entertainer, Paul Rodriguez and Tommy Davidson.

The series went to Houston, Texas to help the Johnson family, whose house was damaged by Hurricane Ike. As a result of the hurricane, the locks in the Johnson's tiny home had to be opened with a screwdriver. But was just the start of the problems. The floor was rotting, the roof was caving in -- and the family had to eat off of paper plates ... because the weight of real plates would cause their shelves to collapse.

Katy Perry Gives Advice, and Gives Away Her Shoes, on 'Extreme Makeover' (VIDEO)

Katy Perry Gives Advice, and Gives Away Her Shoes on 'Extreme Makeover'Singer Katy Perry was very poor when she was growing up. She still remembers being so broke that she had to borrow clothes in order to go out at night. Which might help to explain her actions on the premiere of 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 7PM ET on ABC).

The goal tonight for Ty Pennington and his crew is to build a new house for seven young women. These girls are scholars who have been accepted into 'Boys Hope Girls Hope' -- a Baltimore program that accepts gifted students who come from difficult backgrounds.

The boys in the program already have their own housing, but due to the economic crisis, the girls have been waiting three years to get their own residence hall. Katy and other celebs show up to talk to the girls while their new home is being built.

The Blind Side on 'Extreme Makeover' (VIDEO)

The Blind Side on 'Extreme Makeover'The real life inspiration for the film 'The Blind Side' appeared on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC). Leigh Anne Tuohy -- the woman who was portrayed by Sandra Bullock in the movie -- is an actual interior designer. So you would think that the home makeover show would be a natural fit for her. But surprisingly, Tuohy expresses some frustration with the whole process.

Tuohy gets into some trouble with a construction worker and member of the team. She gives him some flack because she doesn't feel he's doing his job correctly. "I have an extremely domineering personality," she says. "It's type-A, is what they call it."

"When things go wrong on the sidelines, I just want to go out there and just -- you know -- smack somebody," Tuohy adds. Huh. On the other hand, as shown in 'The Blind Side,' when Leigh Anne gets involved and takes control, good stuff usually happens. So maybe it's a good thing.

Sheryl Crow on 'Extreme Makeover'Singer Sheryl Crow appeared on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC). On the show, the singer helped Ty Pennington rebuild a home for Toen and Amy Starkweather. Ethan, the family's youngest son, is suffering from Prader-Willi syndrome. This is a rare disorder that can cause low muscle tone, speech difficulties and behavior problems.

Crow helped rebuild the family house, and then sang her song 'Everyday Is a Winding Road.' Ethan seemed to especially enjoy the music, and got up and began to dance, while mother Amy watched. Crow had this to say: "I grew up with my parents telling me there was nothing I couldn't do. ...I look at Amy and Ethan and I think -- here's a mom who's saying the exact same thing."

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Jillian Harris'The Bachelorette' Jillian Harris jumped reality shows to help out on 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' (Sun., 8PM ET on ABC).

In fact, she proved to be pretty good at breaking windows, which sort of freaked out Brian and Audra Skaggs, the couple whose window she was breaking. No, they weren't there; they were on the other end of Ty Pennington's phone call, listening in on the destruction.

Hopefully, Harris won't need that window-smashing skill in her, uh, personal life. But hey, if she does, at least she'll be prepared.
