Fans asked to help Leno celebrate fifteen years

by Adam Finley, posted May 22nd 2007 4:02PM

jay lenoCan you believe Jay Leno has been hosting The Tonight Show for fifteen years? Believe it, mister. On May 25, 1992, Leno stepped onto the stage as the new host, following in the footsteps of the legendary Johnny Carson.

Fans can go to this page on The Tonight Show Web site and create their own montage using clips and audio from the last fifteen years. I've been scouring the site and have not found an option that allows you to insert Carson back into every episode that has aired since his retirement, which is what myself and many others would like to do.

It was also announced about three years ago that Leno would be stepping down as host in 2009 and that Late Night host Conan O'Brien would take over as the new host. Given the mercurial nature of television, it will be interesting to see if that remains the case in two years.

CBS to honor Bob Barker with two-night tribute - VIDEO

by Adam Finley, posted Apr 3rd 2007 3:22PM

bob barkerCBS is not only broadcasting a send-off to game show legend Bob Barker, they're asking fans to upload their own tributes to the soon-to-be-former Price is Right host.

That's why, in honor of his well-known pleas to help control the pet population, I'll be uploading footage of myself castrating a dachshund.

Anyway, on May 16 at 8:00 p.m., folks can tune in to a special nighttime showing of The Price is Right in which the winner will walk away with one million dollars. The following night, May 17, fans can catch the hour-long retrospective Bob Barker: A Celebration of 50 Years on Television. Some user-submitted videos will be featured during the special, and others will air during the final week of Bob's stint as host of the long-running program (no date has been given yet for Barker's departure).

I love Battlestar, stop talking about Battlestar

by Adam Finley, posted Mar 27th 2007 4:00PM

battlestar galacticaRecently I decided to see what all this Battlestar Galactica noise was about and Netflixed the first couple seasons. As of this writing I'm about midway through the second season and I have to say that yes, it is as good as people say. I don't mean it's good by the sometimes lower standards of other sci-fi fare, I mean it's just a good television program period. Consider me frakking converted.

What to do (and not do) when you meet your idols: a free lesson - VIDEO

by Adam Finley, posted Mar 17th 2007 9:01AM

patton oswaltI understand, I really do. You have a favorite actor, comedian, musician, porn star or whatever, and one night you actually find yourself face to face with them. Maybe it's after a show, maybe it's an autograph signing, or maybe you both happen to be looking at cookbooks at Target. You don't want to pass up this opportunity to meet someone who has provided you with years of entertainment, so what do you do?

George Lucas named Jedi Master of Rose Parade

by Adam Finley, posted Dec 30th 2006 7:26PM

george lucasThe term is actually "Grand Marshall" but whatever, let's not split Wookiee hairs. George Lucas, the man behind Star Wars, one of the most profitable and popular movie franchises of all time, will be joined by select members of the 501st Legion, a total of 200 Star Wars costume enthusiasts who will be wearing costumes (enthusiastically). There will also be two floats dedicated to Star Wars, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2007: one done up like the forest moon of Endor from Return of the Jedi, and another designed to represent the planet Naboo from the prequels. I would have also created a Dagobah float, but alas, nobody asked my opinion. Also, giant helium balloons of some of the characters would be pretty sweet.

Help Joss Whedon get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

by Julia Ward, posted Nov 8th 2006 10:07AM
Joss WhedonEven if you're not a Whedonite yourself, you've got to give it up for the fans of Joss Whedon. The Buffy, Angel and Firefly fanatics have created a community that has held multiple nationwide fundraisers for Whedon's favorite charitable organization Equality Now and single-handedly acted as the grassroots marketing engine behind Whedon's directorial film debut Serenity. Let's just say, they're a nice bunch.

A group of those fans has now turned its attention to honoring Whedon with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their collective reasoning is sorta sweet. "It's a tangible way to show respect by giving him something else to add to his legacy and to show how much he means to us...It's not all about Joss...It's about family, not the one we are born into by blood, but the one that Joss created out of his work...We cannot give him the prestigious awards; most of us are not on any academy boards, nor people that have a choice of nominations." Sorta makes you tear up a bit, doesn't it? Pop culture making the connection. The people's star.

Terry Gilliam visits Daily Show fans

by Adam Finley, posted Oct 6th 2006 8:01PM

terry gilliamTerry Gilliam, one of my favorite movie makers of all time and the visionary behind such films as Brazil and 12 Monkeys, recently paid a visit to a group of ticket holders waiting outside in New York City for a taping of The Daily Show. Gilliam was there to drum up support for his new movie Tideland, based on Mitch Cullin's novel. Gilliam carried a sign that read, "Studio-less filmmaker / family to support / will direct for food." He also carried a paper cup that some of the fans stuffed with dollar bills. Gilliam hung out with the fans and signed autographs, and was even visited by some of the writers from the show and correspondent Dan Bakkedahl. CC Insider has a report of the event, complete with photos.

Oh yeah, the movie opens October 13th.

She-Ra coming to DVD

by Adam Finley, posted May 1st 2006 2:03PM

she-raWhile closing the book on the successful half-hour animated toy commercial that was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the creators realized something: 'Holy cow, we need to find a way to make money off of little girls, too.' Enter She-Ra, Princess of Power, the long lost sister of He-Man. She-Ra was first introduced in the 1985 film "The Secret of the Sword" which then led into the TV series. All 93 episodes of the series will be released on DVD eventually, but not in any specific order. The first release will contain episodes voted on by fans, as well as the feature film, and will be available on July 18, with three more volumes covering the rest of the series to be released over the next year. I watched He-Man religiously as a child, but never really got into She-Ra. I assume, other than the protagonist being a woman, that it didn't venture too far from the "fight evil and learn an important lesson" template of He-Man. Did anyone out there watch it?

NASCAR fans get a better view

by Adam Finley, posted Feb 11th 2006 5:15PM
nascar fanviewTo the unenlightened, it might seem worse to actually be at a NASCAR race than to watch one on television. After all, at least you get to see the whole track on television. If you're in the stands you only see the cars when they drive by, or you're too high up in the stands to really make out anything. What these people don't understand is that real NASCAR fans use that downtime as "downtime" (as in, "downing more beer"). Really, it all works out in the end. Nevertheless, NASCAR, in association with Sprint Nextel and Kangaroo TV in Montreal, will begin renting handheld scanners to spectators called "FanView" that will offer views from inside seven different cars, and also allow fans to access racing stats. To echo what Lost Remote's Stephen Warley said, I'm no fan of NASCAR, but this is a pretty cool idea.

Clay's accuser considering porn

by Adam Finley, posted Feb 1st 2006 1:02PM
Clay Aiken always comes across as a very affable and kind human being. His fans, however, will both attack and eat someone who dares to slight their favorite singer even a little. When a soldier, John Paulus, reported that he had met Clay via the Web and that the two met in a hotel for sex he began to receive death threats. The threats haven't deterred him, obviously, because now he's considering re-enacting his alleged tryst in a porn movie.

I, like most people, think Paulus is full of it, but let's imagine that all of this is true, just for argument's sake. Paulus claims he received no money for his story, so why the obsession with telling everyone about it? Whether this actually happened or didn't happen seems irrelevant now. It all boils down to Paulus wanting to take advantage of whatever remains of his fifteen minutes. Furthermore, everyone already has their minds made about Clay anyway. Some think he's gay, others think he's straight, and then there are those like myself who believe he's actually a robot controlled by a tiny duck inside his head. Clay's best defense is keeping his mouth shut, and he knows this.
