Monk: Mr. Monk and the Big Game

by Adam Finley, posted Jul 22nd 2006 11:23AM

monk(S05E03) I think I may have made this comparison before, but Monk reminds me a lot of Scooby-Doo. It's not so much because both shows are about solving crimes, but because both follow essentially the same basic formula for every episode. Despite this, however, I still love the show.

In this episode, Julie's basketball coach is killed when a towel is left on the floor drain of the girl's locker room and a hairdryer is also left on the floor, causing the coach to become electrocuted when she steps into the water. This is yet another of those rather convoluted James Bond-style murders that always open an episode of Monk. Seriously, had she looked down at the floor before stepping out of the shower she would have seen the hair dryer, but lucky enough for the killer, she just happens to not be paying attention. Also, how many high school coaches actually use the showers in the locker room? Wouldn't they just go home for that sort of thing?

Writer at NBC Sports fired for West Wing plagiarism

by Bob Sassone, posted May 11th 2006 5:28PM
That's an odd headline, eh?

A freelance writer at NBC Sports has been fired for lifting dialogue from the fourth season opener of The West Wing ("20 Hours In America") in a story about a horse trainer in the Kentucky Derby that had rescued three children from a fire. The episode had a storyline about a bombing at a college swim meet, and President Bartlet used the words "ran into the fire" in the same way that this writer in the piece used them.

But it doesn't end there. In the same episode, Bartlet said: "The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels, but every time we think we've measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and we're reminded that that capactiy may be limitless." The Derby piece had this:

"... funny thing about life is that every time we think we've measured our capacity to meet its challenges, we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless."

Wow, I'm not a horse racing fan, but if I had heard that, I would have immediately recognized it, since I've seen that episode 4 million times.

Lost: Fire plus Water

lost fire and waterOK, let me say right up front that I simply did not like this episode. Actually, I sorta hated it. No big plot developments. No mysteries solved or revealed. And then Charlie goes bonkers for seemingly no apparent reason, only to get his ass beat down my Locke. What's more, we have to wait until Februrary 8 for a new episode. Bummer.

Numb3rs: Scorched

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Dec 19th 2005 9:23AM

Bill Nye6,013 fires. 30,000 BTUs. 700 arson deaths. 1 match. Burn, baby, burn. A serial arsonist is on the loose. Up until now, Don and the rest of his team had thought the fires were being set by members of a local activist group known as the Earth Liberation Movement. Then people started dying. First, a salesman at an auto dealership and then six firefighters were severely injured at another explosion. But that's okay, I wasn't worried because Bill Nye came in and saved the day.
