roosevelt franklinEvery so often I'll stumble upon something on the Web I think is totally the bees' knees, but then my excitement is met with total indifference by the folks who read this blog.

So who knows what y'all will think of it, but Way Out Junk is the coolest blog I've seen in some time. It's a collection of albums, many based on television, that are out of print. The blog allows you to download free MP3s, almost all of them transferred from the original vinyl albums.

This American Life premiere is online

by Anna Johns, posted Mar 23rd 2007 1:43PM
ira glassDespite all the rave reviews and my own personal adoration for This American Life, I did not subscribe to Showtime so I could see the televised version of the PBS radio program. But Showtime is crafty. The network has posted this week's premiere episode of This American Life online (for free!) and now I am in love with it. I never thought that This American Life needed pictures to go with its stories, but the story of Chance the bull seems like it would be lost without video.

Take a look at the premiere and tell me what you think. I like it, but I still think I'm too cheap to get Showtime. I keep hoping they'll all be available on iTunes.

(By the way, if you are a fan of This American Life, you'll probably get a kick out of this parody by San Francisco sketch comedy group, Kasper Hauser. Their Ira Glass impression is dead-on.)

Friday Night Lights pilot free on iTunes

by Brett Love, posted Feb 7th 2007 3:00PM
Friday Night LightsI know what you are all thinking. Finally, it's Wednesday night and there is a new... Friday Night Lights! Ok, so only a few of you are thinking that and the majority of you are anxiously awaiting more Idol, the conclusion of Dawson's Criminal Minds adventure, or the return of Lost.

Just in case you need something to pass the time while you wait for your television program of choice, you might want to head on over to iTunes and grab the pilot for Friday Night Lights. Like a drug dealer who has gone straight and started slinging high school drama instead of rocks, the first one is free. If you haven't had a chance to give the Taylor's and the rest of Dillon, Texas a look, I urge you to give it a try. It really is a great show.

If you have had a look, and it's just not your cup of tea, fair enough. For you, the fine folks at Apple also have the premiere of Top Design and the "Guy Love" excerpt from the Scrubs musical episode. All free for the downloading.

[thanks Justin]

TiVo giving away Series2 dual tuner boxes

by Brad Linder, posted Feb 3rd 2007 2:01PM
Series2 Dual TunerTiVo is giving away one Series2 dual tuner TiVo unit per month for the next six months. Drawings will be held on the 8th of March, April, May, June, July, and August. You can enter by submitting your email address or by sending in a post card.

Okay, great, you're thinking. I can win a box that's worth about $70 (which is what TiVo's selling these units for after rebate). Well, sort of. These 80-hour TiVo's also come with lifetime service, which is something TiVo doesn't really sell separately anymore.

According to the fine print, the approximate value of the package is $549.98. So if you don't take the rebate into account, that means if TiVo were still selling lifetime service plans, they'd be worth about $350. That happens to be the same price as a 3-year service plan, although the odds are pretty good that you'd want to replace your Series2 TiVo with a hi-def capable Series3 or something else within three years, so the difference between a 3-year plan and lifetime service might really not be that great for most users.
