A Recent History of Time-Jumping on TV

by Maggie Furlong & Jean Bentley, posted Jun 28th 2011 12:45PM
Weeds, True Blood, Time JumpingLast night's 'Weeds' saw our protagonists flash forward three years in the future, with pot-dealing housewife Nancy Botwin moving from prison to a halfway house in New York City. And on Sunday's 'True Blood' premiere, the residents of Bon Temps skipped ahead an entire year -- a major jump for the series, considering the first three seasons took place during the same month.

All that time-jumping got us thinking about other shows that have pulled the "skip forward" move to avoid awkward plot points. You know, like that time 'One Tree Hill' escaped those clunky college years, or when Melinda had a baby on 'Ghost Whisperer' that was suddenly five years old.

After the page jump, join us in a discussion of time jumps and whether or not they actually worked. (And before you comment-yell at us, this list does not include shows that routinely employ time travel, like 'Doctor Who' or 'Quantum Leap.')

Top 20 Magic/Supernatural Shows Of All Time

by Laura Prudom, posted Dec 9th 2010 3:00PM
Mankind has always been fascinated by the things that we can't explain -- ghosts, vampires, magic, mystery -- and popular culture is saturated with TV shows and movies that play on that obsession.

From the campy, spellbinding classics of the '60s to the dark, spooky series that haunted the '90s, audiences have been fixated with the paranormal -- whether it's a butt-kicking blonde in killer heels, a couple of hunky demon-hunting brothers or a trio of sibling witches -- some of the most enduring shows in the history of television deal with the things that go bump in the night or the extraordinary powers we wish we could harness.

To further feed this dark, dangerous obsession with the extraordinary or otherworldly, TV Squad has compiled a list of our top 20 favorite TV shows dealing with magic and the world of the supernatural.

ABC Declares 'Ghost Whisperer' Dead

by Scott Harris, posted May 28th 2010 10:20AM
For the last five seasons, Jennifer Love Hewitt's character, Melissa Gordon, on 'Ghost Whisperer' has communicated with the dead in order to help them complete unfinished business. Now it appears that she's finally come across the one corpse that's beyond help -- that of her own show.

Yes, it's sad but true: 'Ghost Whisperer' is officially done for, according to a statement released by the show's producers to the Hollywood Reporter. The series, which was a co-production between CBS Television and ABC Studios, was canceled by CBS earlier this spring, opening the door for partner ABC to swoop in and save the day. Instead, it appears they decided to drive a stake through its heart.

The End of 'Ghost Whisperer'Well, here's another show canceled before its time. Or maybe not. The series finale of 'Ghost Whisperer' (Fri., 8PM ET on CBS), tied up a lot of questions, and appeared to resolve the show forever. But maybe there's still room for the future?

[Spoiler alert.]

'Ghost Whisperer' - 'The Children's Parade' Recap (Series Finale)

by Isabelle Carreau, posted May 22nd 2010 12:15AM
Ghost Whisperer(S05E22) "Melinda is not here." - Melinda to Delia

The fact I had to write "series finale" in the title of this post is scarier than the series finale itself. This season has been one of the darkest for the show and the bad guys of the season, the Shadows, seemed to be the ultimate evil. Therefore, I expected a rather dark episode that would contain one hell of a showdown to send the Shadows away.

Instead, we were treated to a way too quick and far from epic face off between the Shinies and the Shadows. What a let down! The upside of the episode? We got closure, which I didn't expect since I thought the series Powers That Be learned too late that the show was getting canceled.

Should ABC Save 'Ghost Whisperer' and 'The New Adventures of Old Christine'?

by Gary Susman, posted May 20th 2010 3:20PM
Ghost WhispererEven though CBS canceled both 'Ghost Whisperer' and 'The New Adventures of Old Christine' earlier this week, there's been lots of talk that ABC might save both shows from the dustbin of history. The most recent rumors (as reported by Deadline and Entertainment Weekly) suggest that ABC still wants 'Ghost Whisperer' but not 'Christine.'

But viewers may well ask: Does either show deserve to be saved?

'Ghost Whisperer' - 'Dead Ringer' Recap

by Isabelle Carreau, posted May 15th 2010 9:30AM
Ghost Whisperer(S05E21) "You're a sick person." - Kyle to Melinda

In my recap of last week's episode, I mentioned that I couldn't wait for someone in Grandview to say that they either already heard of Melinda's gift through gossip or someone to refuse her help and say she was crazy. This week, we got the latter type of guest star ... with a twist.

This was one of the most emotional experiences for Melinda thus far in the series. Not only was she told that she is a sick person, but she was served with a restraining order. Her visions blended way too much with reality, putting Aiden in harm's way, and she and Jim did something I don't even recall them ever doing: fight!

'Ghost Whisperer' - 'Blood Money' Recap

Ghost Whisperer(S05E20) "Ghosts? Is that your specialty?" - Greg to Melinda

I'm always surprised that no one in Grandview gossips about Melinda's gift so that it becomes somewhat common knowledge. After helping ghosts reconnect with their families for five years, one would expect that a few would have told their friends about Melinda's gift and helping them, no? Wouldn't you want to tell your friends how you got closure thanks to Melinda?

I can't wait to get a "Oh! You are that Melinda! I've heard about you!" Instead, we have to believe that everyone is able to keep Melinda's gift a secret. Then again, maybe some did gossip because rare are the people who say "WTF?!?! You can see ghosts!?!?" This week was no different.

'Ghost Whisperer' - 'Lethal Combination' Recap

by Jason Hughes, posted May 1st 2010 3:38PM
'Ghost Whisperer'(S05E19) Personally, I'd have thought it was pretty awesome to have the pink Power Ranger as a babysitter. Unfortunately, Erin Cahill's character came with a lot of baggage. Since this is 'Ghost Whisperer,' I'm sure you can imagine what that baggage consisted of.

This episode took a break from the ongoing plotlines involving Shadows and Shinies, and all that other creepy stuff we're learning goes bump in the night other than ghosts. Instead, it got back to the heart of what 'Ghost Whisperer' was all about: helping a lost soul go into the light. I'm ashamed to admit it wasn't until very late in the episode that I realized the spirit was portrayed by Catherine Dent ('The Shield'). The make-up wasn't that intense!

The episode also pushed the limits of forgiveness and understanding about as far as they can be pushed. We've had some angry ghosts before, and they can definitely be a danger, but Laura (Dent) really surprised me.

Kathy Griffin Goes Public With On-Camera Pap Smear

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 15th 2010 4:03PM
kathy_griffin_the_advocate_coverLately, television has been getting more and more open and even invasive when it comes to keeping some things private. On VH1's E!'s 'Pretty Wild,' for instance, you can see the breasts of the ladies completely exposed with only the nipples blurred (as if that's the part that's not allowed on television!). On all the forensic dramas, the 'CSI's' and 'House,' getting inside the body is a regular, CGI-created event.

But for the really, really inside stuff, we've seen CBS's Katie Couric and Harry Smith having colonscopies on camera to illustrate the importance of the test in diagnosing colon cancer. And now Kathy Griffin will be the latest celebrity to lift the veil of privacy when it comes to the pap smear. On Wednesday, Kathy tweeted the news -- and invited the world: "Um, I'm getting a public pap smear, on camera, poolside @ The Palomar Hotel in LA Friday."

'Ghost Whisperer' - 'On Thin Ice' Recap

(S05E17) "What is happening to me?" - Damon

What's happening to you, Damon? You are the haunted character of the week that Melinda and company try to help. Same old, same old. This week's installment of 'Ghost Whisperer' was pretty much a filler episode that didn't offer character or show mythology development. I know, I know, not every single episode can move the year's main storylines along.

Luckily, the culprit of the week was not that easy to pinpoint and the comic book theme was pretty cool, especially when the last shot before each commercial was comic-book panel style. Sadly, these cool tidbits were overshadowed by a really badly done fantasy sequence.

Jennifer Love Hewitt on Finding True Love (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Mar 23rd 2010 11:30AM
While promoting her new book 'The Day I Shot Cupid' on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM ET on NBC), Jennifer Love Hewitt addressed the reaction by the press to her dating history, and discussed what she thinks it'll take to find true love.

Hewitt said she thinks the press has described her as a "serial dater" because she tends to "just spend time with people and have boyfriends versus dates." She added that, in order to find Mr. Right, she thinks it's necessary to work through "a lot of frogs" before finding a "prince." Interesting, but does that really explain why she slummed it with 'Ghost Whisperer' co-star Jamie Kennedy?

'Ghost Whisperer' - 'Old Sins Cast Long Shadows' Recap

Ghost Whisperer
(S05E16) "Don't come back. You'll be dead too." - Cassidy from the mirror

Last week's 100th episode was a tough act to follow. We couldn't expect an episode as action packed as 'Implosion' was this week but we were given spooky episode that, even if somewhat a "filler episode" because we didn't learn a lot of new tidbits about the Shadows, helped push the issue about the Shadows and them wanting children a bit further.

'Old Sins Cast Long Shadows' was yet another rather dark episode of the series this season. Madame Greta looked so spooky and scary that I'm glad I forgot to record the episode on Friday so I couldn't watch it on my return around 11 p.m. and had to watch the episode online during the day (which is why my review is late as I had to wait for it to be online). Yes, I scare that easy.

'Ghost Whisperer' - 'Implosion' Recap

Ghost Whisperer
(S05E15) "Wow! It must be really really interesting to be you." - Delia to Melinda

It may be interesting to be Melinda, but it's also scary, stressful and demanding. Melinda's gift does allow her to help people, but it also comes with a price. This week's milestone episode put Melinda and co. in grave danger, and one important character died in the end.

Jennifer Love Hewitt directed this week's installment, which is the show's 100th episode. She did a very good job, especially for such an action-pack and Shadow-heavy episode. Bravo!

So who died? The answer coming up!
