Chaz Bono to Receive GLSEN Respect Award

by Crystal Bell, posted Oct 21st 2011 1:30PM
Chaz Bono may or may not have a shot at taking home the Mirror Ball trophy on 'Dancing With the Stars' this year, but he will be taking home a much more important award: the 2011 GLSEN Hero Award.

GLSEN -- the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network -- is honoring Bono, among others, at the seventh annual 2011 Respect Awards in Beverly Hills.

The Respect Awards are meant to honor individuals and corporations that have made significant advances in areas like diversity and inclusion.

Bono, a LGBT activist and author, legally became a man last year after gender-reassignment surgery. Bono's transition was the subject of the Emmy-nominated OWN documentary, 'Becoming Chaz,' as well as his own book, titled 'Transition,' which was released in May 2011.

'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Dancing' & More Stars at GLSEN Red Carpet

by Michael Maloney, posted Oct 16th 2009 5:30PM
Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel HBO, 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Private Practice' creator Shonda Rhimes and philanthropist David Bohnett were honored Oct. 9 night by GLSEN at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The organization (which is pronounced "glisten") stands for Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and seeks to create safe school environments for all students by making them aware of how harmful comments like "that's so gay" are.

Television's primary goal is to entertain, but it can also educate, according to Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming. "We've certainly seen TV shows that have gay characters, but they're usually playing comedic foils or certainly asexual," Lombardo said.

Gay group mad at The Simpsons

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 5th 2008 3:02PM
Simpsons HalloweenYou know, E! Online should choose its headlines a little more carefully. Or maybe they did it on purpose, heh.

The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network is ticked that The Simpsons annual "Treehouse of Horror" special had a line from Nelson Muntz that they consider a gay slur. Muntz said "that's so gay" towards Milhouse in a scene in the episode this past weekend. A spokesman for the group says that Muntz should visit thinkb4youspeak.com, a site that asks people not to use the word gay in a negative way. I guess that will be a Very Special Episode of The Simpsons.

The funny thing is this is not even the first time that the show has used the line "that's so gay." I think I remember it being used by one of Nelson's buddies when he was dating Lisa several seasons ago. I think the line was something like "You have a girlfriend? That's so gay!"

So, is this a slur or are people just overreacting at a joke, being too PC?
