'Golden Girls' Theme Song Writer Andrew Gold Dies at 59

by Jean Bentley, posted Jun 6th 2011 11:30AM
The Golden GirlsYou might not have heard of Andrew Gold, but you've definitely heard his work.

The singer-songwriter worked with luminaries like Linda Ronstadt, Art Garfunkel, Celine Dion, James Taylor and Sir Paul McCartney in the '70s, but he was most famous for the iconic tune 'Thank You For Being a Friend,' which was used as the theme song for 'The Golden Girls' during the sitcom's seven-year run.

Gold died Friday of a heart attack in Los Angeles at age 59. You know what this means -- Betty White will truly outlive us all.

After the jump, sing along with us as we honor Gold's life (and amazing contribution to the TV landscape).

'Golden Girls' Gets a Spanish Reboot

by Nick Zaino, posted Jul 27th 2010 2:00PM
Golden GirlsBetty White's appeal is so powerful, they're remaking her old shows in Spain.

Variety.com
is reporting that 'The Golden Girls' is headed for Spanish TV. Disney Media Networks, Spanish producer Joe Luis Moreno, and the Miami-based Latin World Entertainment will produce the show, called 'Las Chicas de Oro,' for Spain's TVE.

Variety also points out that this is just another in a long line of 'Golden Girl' translations, which have reached Greece, Turkey, Russia, the U.K. and Latin America. Hopefully all of them have included some version of Andrew Gold's 'Thank You for Being a Friend,' the show's theme song.

'I Spy' star Robert Culp dead at 79

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 24th 2010 6:25PM
I SpyOne half of the 'I Spy' team is gone: Robert Culp has died near his home in Hollywood at the age of 79. What's even more troubling is the way he died. Culp apparently fell and hit his head while out for a walk and was found by a jogger. He later died at a hospital.

Although Culp is probably best known for his work with Bill Cosby on 'I Spy,' he could be equally well-known to modern audiences for his work on two other classic shows. He played Agent Bill Maxwell on 'The Greatest American Hero' and also played Debra's dad on 'Everybody Loves Raymond.'

He made appearances in tons of other TV shows too: 'Columbo' (he was the murderer four times), 'Murder, She Wrote,' 'Matlock,' 'Robot Chicken,' 'The Outer Limits,' 'Police Story,' 'Dr. Kildare,' 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E., 'Combat,' 'Disneyland,' 'The Rifleman,' 'Bonanza,' 'Golden Girls,' 'Wings,' and many more shows and movies.

Oh, 'I Spy' was a fantastic show. It was shot on location around the world, which is rather rare for a TV show. It's on tonight at 9 on Retro TV. After the jump, the opening (you can also watch the show for free at SlashControl).

Facebook Group Wants Betty White to Host 'SNL'

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 5th 2010 10:31AM
Betty WhiteNow here's a Facebook group I can get behind. Close to 10,000 people have joined the Betty White To Host 'SNL' (please?) group at the networking site. There's been no talks with NBC about White hosting the show, this is just something that fans cooked up and want to happen.

This is one of those things where you say to yourself, "hey, why not?" White is a TV icon, and even though she's 88 years old she's still spry, and I bet she could handle an hour or so of sketches. Besides, if the show can have people like Charles Barkley, Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, and Ellen Page host, why not White? She's been around for several decades, is one of those TV stars who is known to both people in their 50s (if they even watch 'SNL') and also people in their 20s ('The Golden Girls' is actually quite popular on college campuses). She was even on '30 Rock' this season.

Lorne Michaels, your move.

Stop what you're doing and watch this guy with the Golden Girls painted on his face

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 7th 2010 3:29PM
This is the weirdest thing you'll see all day. A guy painted the women of The Golden Girls on his face, and in this video he...moves his face around while the show's theme song plays in the background. Talented guy actually, he drew it himself.

You will not forget this anytime soon.

Sit Down, Shut Up: Back in Time

by Kona Gallagher, posted May 11th 2009 12:40AM
sit down shut up

(S01E04)
So it's bad when a comedy makes you want to cry, right? I mean, it's not their fault, I'm sure that when they animated the scene of the Knob Haven High staff sitting around eating cheese cake, Bea Arthur was still alive. But when they played the Golden Girls music, I couldn't help but think that was a much better show.

The whole Golden Girls thing was just many of the random, awkward 80s parodies they did this episode. I liked the cold open where they were initially assigning themselves parts in 80s teen comedies, and the later Huey Lewis payoff was pretty funny, but I need help.

I'm not sure if I missed it, but I did not get the bagel thing. For the life of me, I just couldn't figure it out; and no matter what the show said, it wasn't funnier on re-watch.

Bea Arthur also saved animals (as do her 'girls')

by Eliot Glazer, posted May 10th 2009 1:39PM
bea arthur peta animal rights activist petsThe late Bea Arthur was, among other things, a comedic genius, feminist icon, and beloved American actress of stage and screen. But widely overlooked in the recent coverage of her passing is the fact that she was a active advocate for animal rights. She campaigned against the force-feeding of ducks in the foie gras trade, even accompanying the president of PETA to London, where she demanded that Harrod's discontinue their peddling pâté.

Bea Arthur dead at 86

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 25th 2009 4:30PM
Bea ArthurAnd then there were two.

Golden Girls star Bea Arthur died this morning in Los Angeles. She was 86. This is actually a bit of a shock. Not that 86 is young, but she always seemed healthy and spry, even in the last few years, doing her stage show and guest starring on various TV shows and endless specials.
