Best Football Shows Ever

by Scott Harris, posted Feb 1st 2011 3:00PM
Football ShowsBaseball may be known as our national pastime, but there's no doubt what America's favorite sport really is: football.

Much of football's popularity can be traced to how well football translates to television, with tens of millions of people tuning in every weekend to enjoy the sport on every level from high school and college to the NFL.

So, considering how well suited football is for the small screen, it's a surprise just how few TV shows about football there have been over the decades. Sure, there are plenty of live shows with pundits and former players discussing next week's matchup or breaking down last week's game film, but we mean honest-go-goodness programming -- you know, like dramas, comedies, reality shows. Why haven't there been more about the ol' pigskin?

Could Rex Ryan Be the Next John Madden?

by Joel Keller, posted Sep 10th 2010 4:30PM
Rex Ryan, head coach of the New York JetsAnyone who follows the NFL or New York sports has probably heard Jets head coach Rex Ryan's shtick by now. He's blustery, boastful, and likes to use colorful language.

But now the rest of the country is seeing what the hubbub around Ryan has been about via the ever-interesting HBO series 'Hard Knocks,' which documented the Jets training camp this summer. Ryan's national profile has skyrocketed, leading Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News to already wonder if Ryan can be the plain-spoken heir apparent to John Madden in the broadcast booth.

It's an interesting thought, one that has some merit. But if Ryan were to make his way into the booth after his coaching career is over, he's going to have to make some changes in order to be successful.

A Jets Fan Is Tackled on 'Hard Knocks: Training Camp' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Sep 2nd 2010 11:32AM
Fan Is Tackled on 'Hard Knocks: Training Camp'During the New York Jets' training camp on 'Hard Knocks' (Wed., 10PM ET on HBO), fans start getting a little overzealous. After a great play, one rambles onto the field with his arms up. He won't move. "Look at this dude on the field, man, he is trippin'," says Jets cornerback Marquice Cole. "Where the police at, man?"

Two security guys come out. At first he dodges their grasp. Then they throw him down on the ground like they know a thing or two about how to tackle.

The crowd starts cheering. "Hey, give it up, man, for the guy that ran on the field like a jacka--," says Cole.

The Jets Get Exasperated With Darrelle Revis's Holdout on 'Hard Knocks' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 12th 2010 1:45AM
On 'Hard Knocks,' Darrelle Revis Tries to Renegotiate His NFL Contract - and It Goes Really BadlyIf you made $1 million a year, and you still had issues with your employer, would that be bad? How much money is enough to make? These are some tough questions. On 'Hard Knocks' (Wed., 10PM ET on HBO), we get to see an NFL team dealing with a diva football player.

Darrelle Revis is maybe the best cornerback in the National Football League. But he also has a bit of an attitude problem. Darelle wants more money; even though he's already signed a contract for one million per year.

... Um, how does this work again? Isn't a contract a contract? Apparently not, in the world of pro sports. And so we get to watch the staff of the Jets plead with Darelle to play for them, because he seems to have decided that he wants more cash. It doesn't go very well for anyone.

What do you think? Should Darelle just go along with his current contract? Or is he so talented that he deserves more money?

HBO Chooses New York Jets for 'Hard Knocks'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 26th 2010 1:29PM
rex_ryan_new_york_jets_mark_sanchezLast year, the idea of putting the New York Jets on HBO's 'Hard Knocks' documentary series might have seemed a poor choice. They had a rookie head coach, a rookie -- albeit high profile -- starting quarterback, and they were coming off a less than stellar, no-playoffs season.

This year, however, it's a whole 'nother story. The Jets are smokin'. As a Miami Dolphins fan, this pisses me off like you can't imagine. But for HBO, the New York Jets are a great pick for 'Hard Knocks,' the show that takes viewers into the training camp of an NFL team to watch them put it together for season to come.

Getting to Know Chad Ochocinco

by Chris Jordan, posted Mar 16th 2010 2:00PM
Football player Chad Ochocinco is hard at work training for his upcoming appearance on season 10 of 'Dancing With the Stars,' which debuts Monday at 8PM ET on ABC.

He recently ran through Hollenbeck Park in Los Angeles and did some stretches, too. Naked.

A video of the workout went viral and wound up on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Kimmel must have liked what he saw because he predicted Ochocinco would win.
